David Letterman Hosts US: A Look at the '70s, Jan. 1980 (Update 2)

The End
The End
Us in the 70s.
The Census Bureau counted nearly 208 million of us at the beginning of the
decade.
What were we like?
Who made us smile?
What villains did we boo?
What heroes did we cheer?
And who made us just plain stare?
You ought to see her in something skimpy.
Hello, I'm David Letterman.
These faces and more flashed by in Us, a magazine created in the 70s for a
generation raised on vivid images.
On this show, we're going to be jogging your memory through the kaleidoscope of
vivid images that were the 70s.
What we hope to do is evoke the decade spirit, showing you not only its sense
of purpose, but also its sense of fun.
Looking back on the 70s, we see things that dazzled us, shocked us, and changed
our lives.
It was a decade of extreme contrasts.
We had people taking it all off, and we also had cover-ups.
Skylab fell, and gas prices rose.
We discovered low-tar cigarettes, but we were faced with high-tar beaches.
We threw away our pop-tops, but tried to save the whales.
There were home videotape recorders and cassette players, but somehow we still
managed to miss a certain 18 minutes of tape.
There were megabucks and microwaves, moon rocks, pop rocks, and pet rocks.
Sometimes things came in small packages.
For example, can you imagine life in the 70s without one of these?
The truth is, not even the best pocket calculator, however, can make the 70s
add up to one image.
The years spilled out too quickly.
Us in the 70s.
What were we like back then when it all started?
The decade began with enough searing images to last a lifetime.
At the Munich Olympics, a wave of terror exploded.
At Wounded Knee, American Indians took a violent stand.
At New York's Attica Prison, inmates staged a four-day uprising,
and Governor Rockefeller sent in state troopers.
If they go in there, it's going to be a massacre in this prison,
and it's on the heads of the authorities if it takes place.
Why do you think that they're not letting you in, Mr. Castle?
I think they're killing people.
National Guardsmen killed four students and wounded nine others
during an anti-war demonstration at Kent State University.
One, two, three, four, we don't want to fight you!
The undeclared war in Vietnam had split the country.
The protests at home show a nation in turmoil.
We believe that peace is at hand in a matter of weeks.
The undeclared war in Vietnam had split the country.
The undeclared war in Vietnam had split the country.

I cried every day that I was in Vietnam.
And I never cried for the Vietnamese.
It's impossible to have pity for them.
I cried for America.
The bombs are falling on Vietnam.
But it is an American tragedy.
And it will take the American people many, many, many years to wipe out the blight
of this war.
Some of our citizens have become accustomed to thinking that whatever our
government says must be false.
And whatever our enemies say must be true as far as this war is concerned.
Joining Jane Fonda on Nixon's ever-growing enemies list was Dr. Daniel Ellsberg,
who shocked the world and risked prison by disclosing a top secret government
study later called the Pentagon Papers.
Dr. Ellsberg, why did you feel you were qualified to make a judgment as to what
is in the best interest of national security as opposed to experts in the U.S.
government?
Senator Thurmond?
I had been one of those experts in the U.S. government for 12 years.
If the Pentagon Papers shortened their war by a week, and I feel they probably
did, then this was very much worthwhile.
The President is doing his job as he sees it. That's bombing Indochina.
I'm doing my job as a citizen trying to stop him.
Let us, therefore, unite as a nation in a firm and wise policy of real peace.
Not the peace of surrender, but peace with honor.
No honor in four more years of prison for our prisoners in Hanoi.
Senator George H. McGovern is hereby declared the 1972 Democratic nominee for
President of the United States.
Come home, America. Come home to the affirmation that we have a dream. Come
home to the conviction that we can move our country forward. Come home to the
belief that we can seek a newer world.
But before McGovern had the chance to deal with Vietnam, he was forced to face
another crisis even closer to home.
This political business sometimes can be pretty heady stuff.
Especially now since I've been the vice presidential nominee for about eight
hours.
And I'm still on cloud nine, as some of the youngsters call it.
But sometimes these balloons can be easily deflated.
When I first learned of his past medical history, I made a judgment at that
time that I should back him one hundred percent or a thousand percent.
But the public debate over Senator Eagleton's past medical history continues to
divert attention from the great national issues that need to be discussed.
Therefore, tomorrow morning, I will write to the chairman of the Democratic
Party withdrawing my candidacy.
Meanwhile, on the Republican front, Nixon had problems of his own with his acrid-tongued
running mate, Spiro Agnew.
And it's still a free country, thank heaven. The right to travel has not been
abridged in America.
Airplanes are still flying to other countries.
You can renounce your citizenship if you don't like it here, so why don't you
leave?
I thought he was the best man for the job four years ago.
I think he is the best man for the job today.
And I'm not going to change my mind tomorrow.
I'm not going to change my mind now.
I'm not going to change my mind now.
I'm not going to change my mind now.

And me, I'm got Kissinger.
And now, he'll kick me.
I have no intention whatever of walking away from the job I was elected to do.
I believe all of my actions were proper, in accord with the President's
instructions, and clearly in the national interest.
There's been no wrongdoing by me or anybody else that I know of in connection
with the matter.
I don't think I have any specific answers to specific questions about specific
events.
I think what's important is to get the truth out to the American people about
the President and whether or not he was involved in Watergate.
I know he wasn't, and I know he wasn't involved in Watergate cover-up.
There was a cancer growing on the presidency.
And if the cancer was not removed, the President himself would be killed by it.
I also told him that it was important that this cancer be removed immediately
because it was growing more deadly every day.
What can I tell you what?
A water game. A water game.
I can tell you it leaks.
How?
