Harmon Killebrew Night on Letterman, February 11, 1986 (full)

Hi there. Tonight we're going to devote our entire program to one of the
greatest baseball players of all time, Hall of Famer, Harmon Killebrew.
Thanks, Dave.
You had a terrific career, 573 home runs, a perennial all-star, but you're a
champion off the field as well, a loving husband and a caring father.
Dave, I've also got a car dealership.
Yeah, right. Harmon, some folks up there in the last row want to know if they
could have a souvenir before we start. What do you think?
Well, it's been a while, but I'll do my best.
Well, don't move her. Get some ice on that. How are you feeling?
I feel fine.
Yeah, you still got a real good swing. You really got good wood on it.
Well, I got good wood both places.
Nice job. Okay.
From New York, where a movie called Minnesota Twins has been playing in Times
Square for six years, it's Late Night with David Letterman.
Tonight, Late Night salutes Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew with Harmon's old
friend Bob Allison, Harmon's favorite singer Charlie Pryde, and a very special
visit from a very special guest, and a commemorative painting by Leroy Neiman.
Also, the world premiere of a film made by Harmon Killebrew, and now, the
commissioner of Major League Baseball, David Letterman!
The world premiere of a film made by Leroy Neiman.
The world premiere of a film made by Leroy Neiman.

"Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
You have selected a great night to tune in.
Tonight, can you feel the electricity building?"
Yes!
"That's interesting because we broadcast every night from the electricity
building."
But you know, ladies and gentlemen, tonight, ladies and gentlemen, is Harman Killebrew
night.
And, of course, the stock market closed early today.
Somebody's probably late on the switch in the booth there.
Hospitals, rescheduled surgery, and alternate side of the street parking has
been suspended.
Why, you're saying?
Is it because of the big storm, Dave?
Yeah, probably.
But, you know, in addition to that, it's Harman Killebrew night.
Let me explain how this came about.
A couple of months ago, in November of '85, we did a program that was a film
festival kind
of show.
We had people doing films on the program.
Bette Midler did one.
Michael Keaton did one.
Catherine O'Hara and Andrea Martin also did one.
Harry Shear did one.
The band was in a video.
And our friend Harman Killebrew also made a film for us.
Unfortunately, because of time restraints, we didn't get a chance to have Harman's
film
on that particular program.
But we thought, what the heck?
Rather than waste a perfectly good film, or more accurately, rather than waste
$60,000,
we'd come up with Harman Killebrew night.
And it's tonight, ladies and gentlemen, and we think it's going to be darn fine
viewing.
Right, Paul?
Yes, Dave.
Welcome to our musical director for the festivities, Mr. Paul O'Shea.
Thank you.
Boy, thank you very much.
I got to say, I'm exceptionally thrilled because it's Harman Killebrew night.
Do you know the team for the hat you're wearing?
This hat here?
Yeah.
Yes, of course I do.
What is the team?
It's the team from Fort William and Port Arthur, the Twin Cities of Camden.
No, no, no, no.
No?
It's Minneapolis-St. Paul.
The Minnesota Twins.
Minnesota Twins.
Of course.
That's where Harman spent most of his career.
Of course I know that.
He played for two other teams.
He played for the Senators and also Kansas City.
Right?
Kansas City Athletics or the Kansas City Royals?
Athletics.
Athletics.
That's Royals.
That's Harman back there.
Harman is happy to be here and ready to go.
Because it is Harman Killebrew night, folks, let me show you what every member
of our studio audience gets this evening.
First of all, all of the gentlemen in the audience receive one of these.
It's the Harman Killebrew night windshield scraper.
With the date.
All of the women in the audience receive the lovely Harman Killebrew night rain
bonnet.
Thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen, these are premium giveaways.
Are you ready, Paul?
Yeah.
There we go.
The man we're honoring tonight hit 573 home runs in his 21-year career.
He had a lifetime batting average of .256.
He holds the major league record for intentional walks.
And with over 8,000 at bats, he never once bunted.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Hall of Famer Harman Killebrew.
Yes, sir.
Harman, nice to see you.
Thank you, Dave.
It's nice to be with you finally.
Tell the folks what you have been doing since you stopped playing ball in, what,
1975?
1975 was my last year, and it was the Kansas City Royals.
Kansas City Royals.
When did the Athletics leave Kansas City and go to Oakland?
Oh, I knew you were going to ask me that.
I'm not sure what year that was.
Earlier, though.
I think '69 was the first year for the Kansas City Royals.
And what have you been doing since then?
I've been doing a little television, baseball broadcasting.
You're the voice of the Twins?
Well, I wouldn't say that.
I'm just one of the broadcasters.
You do the TV games.
Yeah, I do the television broadcast.
And where do you live in the office?
We live in Ontario, Oregon.
Yeah.
Nice town?
Well, I think so.
It's a great town.
A small town.
Now, we mentioned, Harman, that you had done a film for us.
And we were unable to air it that night.
But we have the film you did, and we're going to show it tonight in its
entirety.
But before we see the whole film, we have here just a couple of seconds of that
movie.
A clip, so to speak, of the film.
Tell the people what they're going to see here.
Well, Dave, you were kind enough to send a film crew out to Idaho and Oregon to
do this.
And just kind of a day in my life out there.
And I think...
Okay.
So this is a teaser of what you're going to be seeing later in its entirety.
A film featuring Harman Killebrew.
Watch carefully.
I think you'll enjoy it.
Hi.
I'm Harman Killebrew.
Oh, I got that line right.
Pretty good.
Pretty good.
Pretty good.
Harman, you're in the Hall of Fame.
You went in, what, two years ago, about?
Two years ago.
Yeah.
Now, that was a big thrill, obviously.
What was your biggest thrill in baseball as a player?
Well, I suppose it's everybody's dream, Dave, to play in the World Series.
I know it was mine.
And we realized that dream in 1965.
Played the Dodgers?
Played against the Dodgers.
Koufax, Drysdale, that group.
Yeah.
And we lost in seven games.
What kind of series did you have?
Not too bad.
Got lucky a couple of times.
Got a few hits.
Yeah.
Who were some of your contemporaries?
On my ball club or...?
Yeah, just guys you played with.
The guys in your peer group.
Well, I guess I played against fellas like Mantle and K-Line and that area.
Was Billy Martin before you a little bit?
Billy was before me, with me, after me.
Yeah.
Do you stay in touch with Billy much?
Occasionally.
I was with the Oakland Ball Club doing a broadcast when Billy was the manager
out there.
Yeah.
Are you friendly with Billy?
Oh, sure.
When was the last time you talked to Billy?
Uh...
Been a little while.
Been a while.
Tough to get a hold of, is it?
I saw him last summer.
All right.
You know, Harmon, to commemorate a special night, not just a special night, but
a special career
and a special man, we've asked world-famous artist Leroy Neiman here tonight.
And during the show, he's going to be capturing all the magic of Harman Killebrew
Night on canvas.
There he is at work.
Folks, say hello to Leroy Neiman.
Here I am.
Nice to see you.
And he'll finish that up during the show.
And I guess...
Can Harman have that, Leroy?
No.
So, apparently, he is open to negotiations.
But, uh...
All right.
We have...
We have quite a show here.
Thanks again for being with us.
Folks, please come back.
It's Harman Killebrew Night.
What killed a dinosaur?
Well, I don't know.
Science has a lot of theories about that.
But, uh...
I have a lot of theories of my own.
But we'll get into that later.
How do you do?
Uh...
It's Harman Killebrew Night.
Harman, as far as you know, are you the only man in the Hall of Fame who never
bunted in his career?
Uh...
I wish he hadn't brought that up because I practiced every day, Dave.
Uh-huh.
You could have laid one down in a crucial situation?
I could have laid one down.
I just wasn't called.
Never called upon to bunt.
No.
You're known as a very strong hitter, right?
Well, I had to be strong.
I couldn't run very fast.
Yeah.
Strength runs in your family?
Uh...
That's what I've been told.
That's the story.
Yeah.
Relatives who are quite strong?
I think they told me that my great-grandfather, Culver Killebrew, was one of
the strongest men in the Union Army.
Is that right?
They said that he could stand flat-footed and jump over a standing horse.
I don't know if that's true or not.
Just a standing jump right over a horse.
Jump over a horse.
Have you ever tried that?
No.
I think I could make it to the mid-section.
I think that was considered for the Olympics back in the '50s, but they had
lost interest.
You mentioned that you live in Oregon, and you're a successful businessman
there, and one of your enterprises is an automobile dealership.
What kind of cars are you selling up there, Harmon?
We sell all kinds.
General Motors cars.
Yeah.
What's the big item?
What's the high-ticket item?
What's the big one?
Am I allowed to?
Sure, you're allowed to.
Sure, sure.
Well, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile.
What would you charge me for a new Buick?
Camelot.
GMC.
What's a new Buick go for these days?
For you, David, we'd give you a good deal.
A good deal.
We're going to see what kind of deal you can expect here from Mr. Killebrew.
We have a commercial that runs on television in your hometown, and I guess you're
in the commercial, right?
What's the name of the agency, the dealership?
Harmon Killebrew Motors.
Harmon Killebrew Motors.
Here it is, folks.
Some dealers sell cars by the hundreds, but at Harmon Killebrew Motors in
Ontario, we sell cars one at a time.
We know that your new car purchase is a major decision, and we'll take the time
to help you make it the right one.
We pride ourselves on that kind of a hometown customer service, and we've got a
great lineup of new cars to choose from.
Come on over and see my team.
I'm sure you'll find just the car and the deal you want at Harmon Killebrew
Motors in Ontario.
Yeah, he sells cars one at a time.
That's right.
One at a time.
Did you buy a car from that guy?
Harmon, what if somebody comes in and says, "I'd like a dozen"?
No, no.
We sell them one at a time.
One at a time.
Sorry.
Harmon, our first guest tonight is someone very special in your life.
Now, listen carefully.
Let me ask you, do you recognize this voice?
Hi, Harmon.
Hi, Dave.
Can you hear me?
Yeah, I can hear him, but I don't recognize that voice.
I'm not sure.
Biff, is that you?
Yes, Dave.
It's me, Biff Anderson, the stage manager.
I'm just testing some equipment.
Oh.
I'm sorry, Harmon.
Biff, can you go ahead and put the other guy on?
Hi, Harm.
We played together on the Cinders and the Twins for some 12 plus years.
We were friends and roommates.
Is he reading that?
I recognize that voice.
That would be...
That's my old roomie, Bob Allison.
That's right, Harmon.
It's your Minnesota Twin teammate and roommate, as well as your best friend,
former outfielder
and first baseman, all the way from St. Paul, Bob Allison.
Bob, come out here.
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
How are you?
Now, you live in St. Paul.
What's the matter, Bob?
Where's the ice cream?
Oh, no, there's no ice cream.
Did Harmon eat a lot of ice cream?
By the gallons.
Oh, is that right?
When you guys were playing, Harmon would
