Hi, how are you?
All right, here we go.
Thank you so much.
I appreciate that random hooting.
You know, in addition to being one of the legends of rhythm and blues music,
our next guest has achieved the ultimate honor.
In August, he will be inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame.
Yep, that's right.
Ladies and gentlemen, here now singing his classic Spanish Harlem,
please welcome Benny E. King.
Benny.
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
A red rosa in Spanish Harlem
With eyes as black as coal
Then look down in my soul
It starts a fire there
And then I lose control
I'll have to beg
Your pardon
I'm going to pick that rose and watch
And a red rosa in Spanish Harlem
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
And a red rosa in Spanish Harlem
With eyes as black as coal

Then look down in my soul
And a red rosa in Spanish Harlem

I love it.
Ladies and gentlemen.
I want to point this out.
I hope it was a good experience for you
because we were greatly honored to have you with us.
A couple of years ago, one of our anniversary shows
across the street at Radio City Musical.
You had a great time.
Oh, yeah, it sounded great.
You did a terrific job.
Tell me about the big Beach Music Hall of Fame.
That's for real, actually.
That's for real.
That's not like Beach Boy, surfer music, right?
No, it has nothing to do with that.
What it is, is Beach Music is music that was started
and stayed alive in the Carolinas and in Virginia.
And I would say it's been going for the best
maybe 30-some-odd years.
And it's basically the music that was created
by the stars out of the 50s that's alive and well now.
Can you give us an example of Beach Music?
An example of Beach Music called Money, Honey.
You know the landlord will make my front door bell.
I let it ring for a long, long spell.
I finally got my baby back.
See the band?
You know what?
Yeah.
That's like Beach News.
So it's people who are from that area.
Well, no.
Young guys like yourself, you know.
Right.
No, no, no, kids.
Ah, pretty sure.
No, sure.
No, kids, you know, most,
Connish kids come to Virginia,
you know, during their spring break,
and that's what they enjoy.
Music that basically fits the occasion.
They have fun.
They go out swimming and they come back.
They listen to a music that's soothing.
Right.
And has a story to connect with the future in a positive way.
Yeah.
So now they have their own Hall of Fame
and you're going into it.
Yeah.
Yeah, where is the Hall of Fame?
The Hall of Fame,
we're putting the building up, aren't we?
But no, no, it's being formed in Virginia.
And what's happening is, like,
myself along with Lou Ross,
Levi Stubbs, Hank Ballett,
and quite a few others.
Oh, there's some great names there.
Yeah, great, great names.
Great voices as well.
Yeah, yeah, fabulous songs of people.
Good to see you again.
Thank you, Dave.
Thank you very much.
And as always, you sound terrific.
Benny King, folks,
we'll be back here with Dan Hook.
We'll be back here with Dan Hook.
