The English Overdub Show on Letterman, September 25, 1986

From New York, where Lincoln is a tunnel and Washington is a bridge,
it's "Late Night" with David Letterman. Tonight, Raquel Welch, comedian Sandra
Bernhardt,
and Senior Wences. Also, Dave's supermarket finds.
And now, a man whose favorite president is Chester A. Arthur, David Letterman!
Hey! Thank you. Thank you very much. Yeah! Thank you very much, ladies and
gentlemen. Welcome to the program. My name is Dave Letterman. I'm not a
comedian.
But I play one on TV. Let's do something from the Stones, Paul. Let's do...
Here we go. You ready? Under my thumb. Ready? Go. One, two...
Thank you so much, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Dance Party. You know,
today is President's Day.
President's Day. President's Day? Yeah, what is the deal on President's Day?
Well, they take all the presidents and they smoosh 'em to one.
Paul, you don't... No, no, no. You don't smoosh a president. Maybe you pull
that kind of crap in Canada, buddy, but...
Well, you can smoosh your Prime Minister, but... Yeah, I think there are a
couple that have been smooshed, as I recall, I'm sure, yeah.
Yeah, not a lot. Anyway, it's President's Day, and we're celebrating the
birthday of how many presidents? Two? Two.
Lincoln and, uh, and Washington. And, of course, all federal offices are closed.
All, uh, state offices are closed.
And I think here in New York, all city offices are closed. Uh, uh, there's one
that stays open.
It's the New York City Department of Bribes and Kickbacks. They're still open,
so you can...
Now we're getting somewhere. Thanks, boys.
Oh, thank God, this is over. Ferdinand Marcus has been declared the winner of
the Philippine elections.
Boy, oh boy, that really went down to the wire, didn't it?
Ooh!
And, uh, so Ferdinand, today, his first official order of business, he declared
himself the winner of the publisher's clearinghouse sweepstakes.
Did you see any of the Today Show in, uh, South America, Paul?
No, I didn't.
They took the whole show. This is kind of a neat deal for those weenies.
They get to go down to, um...
They were in, uh, Brazil. Or, as you say, when you're in Brazil, Brazil!
Uh...
They were. They were saying that.
What were they saying again?
Brazil!
And, uh, so they're down in Brazil, and then they do a couple of shows from
Argentina.
And, uh, it's interesting. You know Dr. Art Yulene, the guy who does the
medical reports from the Today Show?
I saw him back this morning. He's back in the city.
Brought a little friend with him back named, uh, Raul. I don't understand that
at all.
What is it? Is this...
Is...
Jack, is this... What is that? Is that making the noise?
Listen, can you hear this thing?
What the heck is that?
I don't know.
You don't know? Has this ever happened before?
Yes.
Oh, it has happened before.
Well, what am I saying? It's RCA. Of course it's happened before.
Uh, sounds like you're about to burn a bearing there.
Well, let me know if you have any trouble with it, alright?
Can you hear that? The camera's...
Now, what are you...
Uh, did I do 'em all, Kevin?
Well, it happened to the really big one. Wasn't there a really big one in there?
Let me see those cards. Are you sure we didn't...
It's the jumbo joke cards, by the way.
You can get these downstairs in the NBC store.
We did "Hi, I'm Dave Letterman. I'm a comedian at Clare on TV."
President's office, Fernand Marcos, and, uh...
Today's show...
I... I did five of these?
Well, where was the real big one?
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
Fold these up, put them back in my wallet.
Uh, okay, here's the deal. What a show. What a show, kids.
Senior Wences is here, uh...
Yeah.
He's, uh...
I believe he's from Brazil.
No, he's not. He's a Spaniard, isn't he? From Spain.
Yeah.
Now, get some oil for that. Is this gonna be knocking all night long?
Yeah.
There, that oughta's straight. Yeah, I'm sure it will.
Uh, Sandra Bernhardt is here, and also Raquel Welsh.
What a -- what a show.
Oh, uh, Paul Schaeffer.
What a show today.
Boy, it's a hot show.
David, I think you're single-handedly bringing Variety back to television.
Oh, thank God. Not a minute too soon.
Yeah.
Uh, how was your weekend? What'd you do?
Uh, my weekend was, uh, pretty nice.
I saw a few live musical acts around town.
Anything good?
Uh, yeah, Marshall Crenshaw.
Oh, yeah, he's been on the show.
Yeah, that's right. He was -- he was sounding good.
How about your weekend?
Oh, you know, I had a weekend, spent the entire weekend alone.
Sitting in my room, waiting for the Stevie Nicks video to come on.
That was it.
Whoo!
Now, do you know this woman?
I know some of the band members know her.
Uh, Steve Jordan has worked with her recently.
He's on a new release.
Well, get her on the show. Can you ask her to be on the show?
I think she's in New Zealand.
Oh, she's not in New Zealand.
Get her on the show. Can you ask her to be on the show?
I'll book her.
All right.
You have the power, by the way, the band member.
A lot of people don't understand this.
The band actually has the power to book people.
Right on the spot.
Be -- be on the show.
Is this thing working all right?
We're going to call Arnie Barnes, our friend in Nebraska.
You know, it's tough. It's tough to dial on TV and concentrate.
I don't know why that is, but it's tough.
Yeah, get Stevie Nicks on here. That'd be great.
What's the name of that song?
Her new video. What's the name of her new video?
How come I'm going to call on the phone?
What's the name of her new video?
I just placed a call to Paul.
Hello, Arnie. Is this you?
Arnie, this is your friend Dave Letterman in New York City.
Do I have your permission to put your voice in our television program here?
Okay. Arnie says it's okay.
Arnie, what's the weather like there in Omaha today?
It ain't too bad. It's about 35.
35? Any precipitation?
Yeah.
Arnie, did you have a nice weekend?
No, not really.
What happened?
I was sick.
Oh.
Well, is it kind of like the flu or what?
Yeah.
All right. Well, I hope you get over it soon.
You haven't missed any work, have you?
No. Friday I did.
Oh, Friday you did.
Arnie works in a meat factory, don't you, Arnie?
Yeah.
Well, you shouldn't go to work if you're sick and handling meat.
Arnie, will you do me a favor?
Wednesday we want to call you back and we want you to do...
We do like a top ten list every day.
Have you ever seen the show?
Yeah.
Okay, we do a top ten list and we want you to call.
We want to have you give us a top ten list, all right?
All right.
Can you do that? Just like ten through one.
Any category you want, we'll call you Wednesday.
All right.
All right. Are you enjoying yourself, Arnie?
Yeah.
Do a lot of people recognize you from being on the show?
Yeah.
Yeah, so it's working out pretty well for you.
Okay, we'll call you back Wednesday, Arnie.
All right.
All right, bye-bye. Thanks again, Arnie.
It's the monosyllabic Arnie from Omaha.
Okay.
Now, how come I hear Paul in this phone?
It's the microphone.
Does it have anything to do with that camera vibrating?
Here's our top ten list tonight.
Oh, before we do this, you know what it is?
Parents' Night is coming up Tuesday.
Yeah.
Are your parents going to be here?
Yeah.
Gentlemen, are your parents going to be here?
All of our parents going to be here?
Should be a nice show.
And speaking of parents, our own Gerard Mulligan, who is one of our writers and
a new father, I don't know, a few months ago.
And we've actually had his son Kevin on the program once before, and since it's
a holiday, I understand they're here tonight out in the hall.
I think it'd be cute to get another look at Kevin if we could.
Can we send a ca-- Oh, there they are.
Gerard, can you hear me?
I can, Dave.
How old is Kevin?
About five and a half months now, Dave.
Oh, that's great.
And do they talk at that age or what?
He says one word.
He says "Dada."
I can hardly see him.
Turn him around, Gerard.
Yeah.
That's a boy.
That's a boy.
He really likes it to his hat.
Say, say, say "Dada."
Can you say "Dada," please?
No.
Say "Dada."
We want everybody to hear you talk.
Say "Dada."
I'm sorry, Dave.
I'm sorry.
I don't know where he came from.
Okay.
Come on, Mike.
That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen.
I understand Gerard's wife has left him.
Kids say the darnest things.
Yeah, they sure do, don't they?
Okay, here's our top ten list.
As always, compiled at the home office in Milwaukee.
Here we go.

Oh, the category is top ten Nebraska festivals.
Coincidentally enough, Arnie lives there in Omaha, Nebraska.
Ah, number ten.

Is it dark in here or is it me?
Or is it these monitors are all dark?
Well, this one's awfully dark, too.
Look at how dark that one is.
Oh, brother.
This would be a good opportunity for you folks at home to adjust your sets as
well.
Look how dark.
Look how awfully dark that one is.
Look how awfully dark that one is.
Start with that damn camera vibrating.
All right.
We've done everything.
We've done everything.
Okay.
We've got a great show.
We'll be back here.
Raquel Welch is with us.
Sandra Bernhardt and Senior Wentz is all from Brazil.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
Woo-hoo!
Woo-hoo!
Woo-hoo!
Woo-hoo!
Oh, brother, this would be a good opportunity for you folks at home to adjust
your sets as well.
Now, look how dark, look how awfully dark that one is.
Start with that damn camera vibrating.
All right, we've done everything? We've done everything.
Okay, we've got a great show. We'll be back here.
Raquel Welch is with us, Sandra Bernhardt, and Senior Wentz is all from Brazil.
We'll be right back.
Thank you, boys. Thank you so much.
Welcome back to the program.
Ladies and gentlemen, we've got a great show.
I'm going to bring out our first guest here in a second.
Now, what's that?
I'm hearing things again.
You know what it is? I've got a cold.
I have a terrible cold. I got it from Barbara.
Thanks, Barbara.
Yeah, I did.
You know, I found out something kind of interesting about one of our staff
members over the weekend.
And, you know, you work with people for a long time,
and so seldom do you really know anything about their daily existences and
their lives,
their problems, what makes them happy, what makes them sad.
There's a woman on this staff, very close friend of ours,
has worked here for a long time, but she's plagued by one tiny little problem.
What's that?
Well, she can do this.
Yeah?
But she can't do this.
So, wait a second, she can do...
But believe me, she leads a rich, full, rewarding life.
She can do this.
She can do that.
She can do that, but she can't do this.
So...
My heart and prayers go out to her tonight.
She can do this.
That's right.
She can't do this.
That's right.
That's right.
I feel terrible.
We're trying to get a support group together for her in the...
They'll use the studio in the afternoons when we're not here to help...
Huh?
There's muskrats back there.
Uh, okay.
Here we go.
You know this woman, don't you, Paul?
Yes, I do.
Uh, my first guest is the author of this book right here.
It's called Raquel.
The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program.
Please say hello to Raquel Welch.
How are you?
Very nice to see you.
Come over here.
You know, Paul, you've met Paul a couple of times.
Thanks for being here.
Nice to see you.
You know, Raquel, we've been on the air four years.
David.
I'm guessing at least once a week, maybe twice, sometimes twice a week.
We phone you.
We send telegrams.
We tried to have you on the show.
I went across the hall once.
You did Live at Five.
But you wouldn't do our show.
Then our producer went down to Washington.
You were doing some kind of book convention.
And he begged and pleaded.
And I think there was
