Thank you so much. Let's get right to it, shall we?
It's our viewer mail. Actual letters from actual viewers.
And as always, if they weren't, would I be able to do this?
No. No, I really wouldn't be able to do it.
Here we go. Letter number one.
Dear Dave, bet you can't read my writing.
Your pal Thomas Greer, Donaldson, Tennessee.
Gee, Thomas, you know, I'm certainly not a handwriting expert,
but I'd say it's about time to increase the lithium.
Letter number one.
Letter number two.
Dear Dave, I sleep in a late night with a David Letterman t-shirt.
What do you sleep in? Your friend Susan Flanagan.
Good question, Susan.
Pretty simple answer.
During the week when I'm doing the program,
I sleep in the back of a 73 Chevy station wagon with Tom Brokaw.
Oh, here we have a photo. There we are together.
We keep it parked out on 49th Street.
It's fun. We enjoy it.
Letter number three.
Hal, call out these letters. We haven't done that in a while,
and I think it helps the drama of the building of the comedy.
Here you go. Stand by, please.
All right.
Letter number three.
Thanks, Hal.
Dear Mr. Letterman, how come all of your guests are always adults?
Do you have some fear of kids from Molly in Baton Rouge, Louisiana?
Gee, Molly, you know, I think you're mistaken here.
The following public service message perhaps will show you just exactly how I
feel about kids.
So watch closely, won't you?
Most of you know me as David Letterman, television personality.
But tonight, I'd like to talk to you as David Letterman, national chairman of
Project Buddy.
Here, I want you to look at some photographs taken of me and my buddy last
weekend.
You know, Project Buddy takes boys who would normally be out playing ball or
even loafing
and gives them the feeling of self-worth only hard physical labor can bring.
Yes, they learn skills that will last a lifetime, and they have a lot of fun,
too.
And what do I get out of it?
Well, you know, somehow just seeing a kid discover the joys of back-breaking
toil makes it all worthwhile.
So if you have a few hours a week and enough love, won't you be a buddy?
It's a great experience.
Right, Tommy?
Well...
You missed a spot.
Right there.
You missed it.
Okay, here we go, Hal.
Ready?
Yeah, I'm sorry.
Letter number four.
Well done, as always, Hal.
Dear Dave, I've noticed that you've been doing more screaming on the show than
you used to.
Why so tense?
Sincerely, Michael Martin, Nashville, Tennessee.
Boy, oh boy, Michael.
So, you know, I really wish I knew why, but I just don't, so...
Do me a favor, will you get off my back if you don't like it, watch CBS, all
right?
Yeah!
I couldn't.
Letter number five.
I made a fool of myself.
Thank you very much, Hal.
Letter number five.
That's just our last letter, by the way, and then we begin the real program.
And boy, what a show we got for you kids tonight.
Well, we told you already who we have, don't we?
And then we're off tomorrow night.
We're off on Friday nights, and we're off on Saturday nights, and we're also
off Sunday night.
And then Monday, we're back on the air.
Can you remember that?
I have trouble myself sometimes remembering that.
Here we go.
Letter number five.
Letter number five.
You all right?
You okay, Dave?
I'm just fine.
I'm just fine.
I just, you know, I expended a great deal of energy there screaming, and it
didn't seem
to really be that funny.
Well...
And it's just me standing there with my big dopey face screaming for a while.
I think we were worried about you more than, you know, thinking that anything
was funny.
They were concerned that maybe I had snapped and had a fit or something?
The whole audience was kind of a little concerned.
But you're okay.
You know, I'm actually angry about something, but I don't know what.
I'll think of something.
Not those West 57th.
No, I like those kids.
Ah.
All right, here we go.
Letter number five.
Most of this will be edited out.
Dear Dave, letter number five begins,
Can I be your friend?
I have none and figured that you're a little low yourself.
That turns out I am.
It's certainly an accurate letter.
And it's signed, Mike the Dupper Dupski, Kirkwood Moe, which I believe is
Missouri.
Kirkwood, Missouri.
Well, that's a real nice letter, Dupper.
Okay, I tell you what.
I'm going to be your friend.
So if we can just bring Dupper out.
Bring him out, boys.
Oh, here's Dupper right there in his little box.
Here.
Put Dupper here on the desk and we'll get a good look at him.
Thank you very much, gentlemen.
Nice to see you.
Thanks for all your help.
And I'll just open this up, Paul, and Dupper will be in here.
Here we go.
Take a look at...
Oh, my gosh, what a cute little fellow we have here.
There he is.
Oh, boy.
Hi, Dave.
I'm the Dupper.
And we're going to be best friends forever and ever.
Oh.
And ever.
Oh, that's...
I'm the Dupper.
That's really cute.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Be careful there.
Bye-bye.
He may not have had his shots.
Have you guys had your shots?
Yeah, they're steamed.
Okay.
We have a wonderful program for you tonight.
We're going to do it here.
We have to do some commercials, and then we'll be right back,
and we'll have a lot of fun, believe me.
It'll be a lot of fun.
We'll be right back.
Thank you.
