Richard Lewis on Later with Bob Costas, Parts 1 and 3 (+ 2), 1989-90

after some 40 appearances on the letterman show richard lewis staying up even
later tonight richard
are you calm i'm as calm as i can be i actually wore my pajama top though i
usually wear black
shirts but fit for you and you know in honor of you you broke up the black
ensemble somewhat well
i usually wear this when i'm either depressed or if there's a death in the
family i wear white but
thank god there wasn't i'm just uh tired but i just i'm glad to be here i idolize
you i you know and
i uh i'm not gonna mock the set i've seen the show almost every time it's been
on comics have a need
to mock this i think it's a wonderful set you do really don't you huh you do
you like it you feel
comfortable in these surroundings well i'll tell you the only thing this might
be the first time in your
life you feel fully comfortable the only problem the only thing that's the
coolest about this set
is that if you can you can't see what camera is that the camera when i walk
behind the set and you have
great baseball cards from like the 50s but like hidden right like it's the most
absurd thing i've
ever seen good i come from dubuque iowa for this and you're going to go you're
going to the bathroom
i can't believe this all right how am i doing oh great okay roger maris and
willie mays oh willie
oh my man roger he might be he lost his hair because he had so much pressure
yeah see now that's
something you can relate to he's hitting 61 homers and 60 and they gave him an
asterisk how dare they
give him a pressure like that wasn't one of the great feats of all an asterisk
you know i have an
asterisk with like you know with women who i've lived with who like you know if
i figure so i've i've
lived with four or five women but simultaneously no no no not simultaneously i'm
not blue beard lewis
but i mean like three years four years five years i've given it a shot i've
given it a shot but one woman was
like just totally like from hell and she lived with me she moved out with me
then slept with some guy a
week later and then moved out so my that so ruined the average it ruined the
average of me trying to
have commitments but that's what roger maris brings up to me so anyway nice to
be here have you ever had
a healthy relationship uh by healthy you mean what nurturing psychologically
nurturing you you're the
better for it uh i i've had nurturing relationships with with almost everyone i've
been with but you
see now i've learned a lesson i've been in therapy for 17 years you can't be
happy all the time you
can't be nurtured all the time and that was my expectation now my expectation
level is somewhere
near like the valley of the of the mole people so now i'm fine remember those
mole people who came
up carrying those those vacuum cleaners that there was supposed to be like
space guns on superman bob you're
scaring me now i don't know what no they came out of the rovers jewish mole
people that were vacuuming
up planets precisely that was exactly what the episode was invasion of the mole
people and superman
like you say three slices that one more time i thought you you sound like a deli
clerk pre-slicely
so anyway it's great to be here bob it's been a long time way overdue you know
i've had root canal
i couldn't be here i've had sinus problems yeah a lot of bookings went down the
drain a lot of bookings but
you know i've been uh having a great time last few months with jamie lee curtis
on a show and i hope
it gets picked up next fall if not i'll just uh i don't want to put pressure on
abc but uh you can
have a guy in a mental institution if you want to pick the show how can they
not pick up the show anything
but love it's in the top 15 well it's top 15 top 10 top this top no i don't it's
it's it's a good show
but you never know they could they could you know winky dink and you could be
in the top 15 with
rosanna as the lead-in so let's okay now that was you know come on i that was a
little bit of a dig
wasn't it perhaps let's face it a bisexual praying mantis nova episode would do
well but we had
we you know we held our audience you know i just want to be on tv every week
because i'm just frightened
to leave home you know i think going on the road is scary although again i am
coming back to new
york to perform at carolines in may and the sands yeah this is the only plug so
who do you follow at
the sands london lee the poor little rich boy no what the sands has i'm there
with buster poindex i'm
actually doing florida for my first time in may tamper i mean i'm gigging man i'm
just i'm gigging
because i have to get back on stage because i'm frightened to be with home with
uh with family
so you know people think when you're on stage that you're out of control and
you're frightened
but not so right no i think i'm the calmest when i'm on stage although i do uh
with all due respect
look like a uh a jewish chicken that escaped the game farm i mean i do run
around i do run around
but i uh i like to play theater in the round and uh but they don't spin when i'm
on i'd spin
and they just sit there it's a whole dyslexic gig you have bad posture
committed suicide over there
you don't care do you not really we have replacements do you know that this guy
i mean he
works so hard there's a million things he has like eight shows taping today it's
like
i'm sandwiched in between the man in the glass booth and uh chubby checker you
don't know what
questions to ask me you're going richard now when you did the twist and now you're
going to ask me
you can ask me john john chancellor questions now yeah john chancellor's in the
green room and you
and you're going to jc you can ask me about what charity now and if i coming
out with a cassette
charity cassettes when i'm dunking charities i don't know what's going on i'm
scared to be here
you and chancellor are going to hang out together after this right yeah well
don't talk about hanging
out i went to a nick game with you the other you weren't there you happened to
be sitting there and
mike tyson uh who else uh the guy the great eric dickerson eric was there and
oh uh who else i
forget now ahmad ahmad yeah yeah of course you guys go out you know afterwards
we asked you if you
wanted me and my buddy john uh we asked you if you wanted to come with us we
wind up going to the to
needyx we got a a hot dog and an orange drink yeah yeah not bad either i might
add we asked you you
see this is your paranoia you went out with celebrities i asked you three times
if you
wanted to come with us well you didn't speak english you spoke at some kind of
danish thing so i wouldn't
understand but anyway i'm just uh glad to be alive and uh we all are aren't we
glad to be alive how
does your mom feel about all this uh i haven't spoken there since 1972 has she
taken a front here's
the thing my mother i love my mother and uh she loves me in a way that only uh
aliens will understand
like those mole people like the mole people you see here's the thing like you
know let i let him in
is like a big thing for me it really truthfully resurrected my stand-up career
i had been doing
it for 10 years prior to getting the show so it really gave me a reason to go
back on stage but you
know what i talk about i'm not saying it's it's certainly not everybody's cup
of tea it's pretty
esoteric and pretty psychotic and my mother god knows is not my target market i
mean you know saddler
and young jack carter she'd pay to see them and you know again talented men but
you know but but my
mother doesn't understand me so if she sees me on letterman she says well they
seem to have liked
you i mean that's not you know yeah so it drives me crazy so i try to keep her
and all my relatives
except some of my younger relatives away she drove the dog crazy didn't she
your mother blanche my dog
committed suicide yeah how did he end his life well how yeah it whittled a handgun
out of a biscuit and
no it did uh and then it barked some prison tunes some old cagney from raul walsh
film that's right
mom raul walsh see that it's a reference you hate see that book and you even
you gave me a look your
eyes started to twirl like the exorcist he directed uh that great cagney movie
when they're in the prison
and pass it down you've had oh yeah you know white heat white heat but uh look
at me ma top of the
world top of the all of a sudden when i think you don't know all of a sudden
you're like you're on
jeopardy all of a sudden here it's a nice shirt too it sort of glows in the
dark it's sort of like a
i don't know it it's sort of joe christopher used to wear that on third base
see i'm doing sports references now because i got to warm me up for bobby
knight because you're going
to be like for like forever now yeah i just i just stay around the clock well i
think i'm a good
warm-up for john chancel who i uh i respect a great deal but i don't know how
you're going to segue
from him and for me to him but look that's your problem you know you're a big
star you're working
out i don't know why you have it now i got to do it the pill wore off did not
mark costa's pill
the nice rug but then you have like a pirate's plank in the front here that the
camera doesn't see
see that's what this this happens to be the parquet floor of boston garden oh
please my aunt from new
rochelle had that in her living room that's one of my goals is to go back and
rip out all the from
micah and all my relatives houses in brooklyn that's sort of a sick kind of uh
you know jack ruby fantasy
so what else any questions about comedy i don't want don't ask me who my
favorites are i don't want to
tell you it doesn't matter who am i to say i i just i just assumed that uh you
know morty gunty and
shecky green and that was it well i love shecky green and morty gunty may rest
in peace was the
first guy i sold a joke to back in 71. i actually sold jokes to morty who was a
big he was actually
did the tv did the cat skills and he did one of my jokes on the david frost
show at the time just before
he was like you know interviewing you know nixon in the tomb or so he does all
these things now that are
you know great or not great whatever but he did david frost morty and uh so i
taped the whole day's
programming was sort of exciting moment for me i don't remember the joke so but
no he was a nice
man really nice man so are you calmed down now or do you still have a lot of
nervousness a lot of
anxiety about being on the show because we have to go now to the musical
montage what's what's the title
and it'll be pat benatar would it not we're gonna play that little pat benatar
thing there's like dead
relatives floating around here there's marley's ghost here there's no one oh
there's some people from the
nbc tour that's right the nbc tour is up there they're looking down on us and
they can't even hear
us we look like two monkeys like just doing this here it's a great tour isn't
you can't even hear
what's going can you hear what's going on here of course not should we do the
commercial look you're
you're the king whatever you say
i can't control my nerves i know you think i'm freaking can't you feel the
curve i swear to you i feel it it
scares me heavy death it gathers in my throat and it gathers up my breath
anxiety got me out of the run
anxiety
i'm gonna get up the telephone there's no one i can call
stay tuned later with bob costas
later with bob costas we'll be right back
so you guys are back together and moving to an alley that's kind of storybook
i don't know i haven't made up my mind
do you think people change marty
sure look at renee richards you know on the other hand though you know some
people never change
look at dick clark you know and then again there's some people that keep
changing you know back and
forth i could look at elizabeth taylor we're back with richard lewis now just
the other day you're on
the letterman show right yes i stopped by to say hello just to see how you're
doing congratulate
you on the overwhelming success of anything but love you've been on this show
40 times and you'
