Rose, is Tom Brokaw still out there?
Huh? Tom Brokaw, is he still out there?
I think he's gone.
Are you sure he's gone?
Tom Brokaw was just out in the hallway, it'd be nice to have him come in and
say hello,
wouldn't it?
Is he out there?
He's not out there because we taped it four weeks ago.
I wish you had been here.
Our next guest is South Africa's top recording artist and recently performed
for Nelson Mandela
right here in New York City at Yankee Stadium.
The new album right here is called Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Johnny Clegg and Savuka.
Up more, up more, up more, up more, up more, up more, up more, up more, up more.
To the ocean, to the ocean, to the ocean, to the creek of the land, to the
ocean.
Once again, the wind's on fire, dancing to your deadly flame. Walking on the
old highway, trying to keep myself away. You've gone dancing down your
marvelous days, throwing back your yellow hair.
And I need you, and I want you. Every time you let me in you, you leave me
feeling such a sweet dispel.
Gonna keep awake, always. Gonna keep awake.
More, more. More, more. More, more. More, more.
It's an illusion, to think I can't keep away from you.
More, more.
Emotion. I-I can't skim holes in my gut tissue.
More, more.
Emotion.
More, more.
State of independence, I'm in.
Illusion, more. More, more.
I feel happy, you feel good. Always go out, when I wanna sleep. Fire, water,
sun, and rain.
War and peace, and night and day. Who can't understand? Love's magic incompatibility.
Who can't understand, love's magic can come back to paradise
Gonna keep awake, awake, gonna keep awake
Keep awake, keep awake, keep awake
Keep awake, keep awake, keep awake, keep awake
It's an illusion, can't you see through the masquerade?
It's an illusion, hiding this love I can't escape
Illusion, hold it to the mammoth line
It's an illusion, life without you isn't the love
I am a foot with no shoe
I am the sky that lost its clue
I am a ship without a crew
Oh, I'm lost without you
One in one, can't make two
Carrots looking for some stew
Pulling away with no interview
Oh, I'm lost without you
Gotta keep awake, awake, gotta keep awake
What is the best way to explain and describe this music?
I have a feeling it's a cultural combination of things.
Yeah, well, it's a mix of Zulu, African, and Western influences, really.
And in your homeland, were you the first one to try and combine these?
Yes, in a previous band called Jaluka.
Yeah, yeah. And you're now on a big, huge worldwide tour?
Yeah.
How's that working out?
Very, very good for us at the moment.
How long have you been away from home?
I've been away five months.
Wow. And you've played all across Europe? You're now back in the United States?
That's right.
Any troubles along the way transporting this many people across the globe for
five months?
Yeah, well, there's bound to be trouble.
We had some equipment problems, one situation, flying from Paris to Bordeaux.
We arrived in Bordeaux and the equipment went some other place.
How did you retrieve it?
Well, we had to hire another charter, separate charter, bring the equipment to
the airport,
and then there was no transport to bring the equipment to the gig, so we had to
hire an ambulance.
An ambulance?
Yeah.
Oh, good. So people sick and injured in the street go unattended while your
amplifiers are being whisked across town.
Terrible.
You know, also, you've got another problem.
Those two guys on the left, Beck, right over there, while you were singing,
those guys were talking.
I saw them.
You were, weren't you?
You guys were?
Yes, of course you were.
All right, there you go.
The album is Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World.
It's terrific music.
Pleasure to meet you.
Thank you very much for being here.
Thank you, Ben.
It's Ted, ladies and gentlemen.
We'll be right back.
