We have a really nice program for you this evening. Ed McMahon will be here.
Also the
gentleman who sings Backwards, David Fuhrer, and a woman who has just published
a beautiful
book of portraits she has taken in her career as chief photographer for Rolling
Stone. Annie
Lebovitz will be here. Paul Schaefer is here. Paul, how are you doing today?
Dave, I'm excited.
And we were talking about it earlier, but a very high compliment and honor was
bestowed
upon me yesterday. And it happened right here on this show. And you were here.
This is what
it was. Don Rickles said to me, and I quote, "Paul, have yourself committed."
Now that,
I think, he hasn't said that to too many people. We'd have to get Ed out of
here.
So that was... He said it to Shecky Green, probably, you know. He probably said
it maybe
to Jackie Gale and that, you know, and me, and that was it. So I'm honored.
That's pretty
much it. How about you, Dave? Well, let me just update you on my cable
situation. I have
it less than a week now. It's been the second day it went out completely. Sixty
channels
of snow. And now we don't get anything above thirty. So we've had the repairman
out twice.
So that's the big cable update. And coming soon to this show, "Stupid Human Tricks."
Yep. I'll tell you more about that later. My first guest tonight is absolutely
one of
the best known and best liked people in America. His latest endeavor is a show
called "Star
Search," which appears weekly. He is also the host of that program, and we're
delighted to
have him with us tonight. Please welcome Ed McMahon.
Ed Elliott. Nice to see you. Thank you. Thank you very much.
You do that very nicely. That's nice. It milked that. Welcome. That's the Wayne,
the Wayne
Newton gesture in Vegas. Oh, really? Guaranteed standing ovation. You want to
see
it? Yeah, do that again. I've just finished, you know, I did it my way. And he
bows and he
goes... when everybody gets up. Everybody stands up. Oh, that's a great trick.
Sure.
If they don't stand up, he goes home sick. Yeah. Oh. Must have a standing ovation
every
performance. How are you? I'm good. Welcome back to New York City. This is a
really homecoming
for you, isn't it? Because... Right across the way, I spent ten years. And
everybody, I know
everyone here. And it's kind of nice. It's wonderful to come back. Yeah. We're
in six... what is this?
Six A, I guess. Six A, and you were in six B. Six B. Now, when that... This is
very interesting
for folks at home. No, no. It will be in a second. I have a way to tie all of
this together.
Yeah. You're very clever at that. I've been watching. Well, I'll do what I can
here. It
may not be as good as the Wayne Newton story, but... Now, when you started the
show, what year
was that with Johnny? 1962. October 1st, yes. Now, wasn't it originally, when
you guys
got it, an hour and... 45 minutes. 45 minutes. Now... He's whittled that down.
See how he's worked it out? He's done very well for himself. He does less...
less time
for more money. Wonderful deal he has. Now, when it started, though, you were
responsible
for the first 15 minutes. Yes. Is that true? Tell people why and how that
worked.
Well, it was because a lot of the stages were not carrying that first 15
minutes, and John
didn't want to come out and do his best material at the top of the show with
only part of the
network caught on. So, it was given to Skitch Henderson, who was the band
leader at that
time, myself, to go out and kind of, you know, stall for 15 minutes, what it
would amounted
to. We couldn't be too funny. You couldn't outshine the boss, you know, and you
didn't
want to be bad. So, somewhere in between. Because we talked about, like, a
mediocre 15.
And how long did that go on? I guess about a year or more, and then, finally,
they lopped
off that 15 minutes, and we went to an hour and a half, and then we went
straight up at
11:30, east and west. Yeah.
In those days, some cities just had a local 15-minute newscast, right?
Right, right. And the network filled up the rest of the time. Now, there are no
more guest
hosts on your show to speak of, right? Well, Joan Rivers does nine weeks a year.
Okay, she would, yeah. She's the only one, yeah. But in the beginning, there
was a wide
variety of folks, right? Oh, yeah. Everybody did it. Anybody here
didn't get a chance to do it? Everybody did. Who, do you remember some people
that maybe
we wouldn't remember who guest hosted the show? Well, I imagine, you would
never think
that this man did the show, and he was absolutely petrified. I never saw a man
so frightened.
Roger Moore. Now, he's so suave, you know. It's James Bond, and so sure of
himself.
Sure.
The ladies, come over here. Sit here, darling. I'll be with you in a minute.
But he came out, he grabbed my arm, he said, "Hey, don't leave me. Stay with me.
Stay
beside me." He did it. Who else did it? Oh, a lot of people did it. The, I
guess the,
Woody Allen did it. Woody Allen hosted it one time.
Now, that must have been strange.
That was a strange night. That really was.
Was he pretty good at it?
Oh, yes. Yeah, yeah. It's that same style. You know, that kind of hesitant
style like
he's in the wrong room. You know, that kind of thing.
Anybody else that you can recall being a...
I'm trying to think of. I think Anita Gillette did it one time. Some ladies did
it. It's been
so long ago. Steve Allen, of course, hosted sometimes for us, and then a lot of
people got
their break from that. David Brenner, that guy became a big star just from subbing
on the
show.
David Brenner, but many, many, many people have a lot of real estate that they
can thank
you and Mr. Carson for. Yeah.
And you were there. You did some work there, too.
I was there putting in some time. We had a good time together, didn't we?
We had a good time. Sure.
Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed working with you.
What, uh...
I got a little steam, that thing you said in the paper, but I mean, that's...
All right. Tell them what you mean.
Well, just, you know, big deal. You know, they're talking about Johnny was
going to leave.
Remember a couple of years ago? He was going to leave. They gave him Rhode
Island. He stayed.
You remember that?
So he was about to leave, and Letterman was talked about in the paper he was
going to take
over the show. There was a lot of publicity about it, a lot of hype about that.
So they
interviewed him. Nice fellow. Supposed to be a friend of mine. They said, "When
you
take over the show, are you going to keep Ed on?" He says, "Oh yeah, I keep him
around
to do the gardening."
Now, let me, let me tell you how that happened. This was a gentleman, uh...
I've been steamed about that for a long time.
Well, I don't, I don't blame you. I don't blame you. By the way, the chrysanthemums
are wilting.
I told my son what I was going to do, I was going to come out with farmer
gloves on and
a trowel, you know.
But, no, this, let me just explain this, because I would be steamed if I were
you also. In fact,
I came to you and I said, "Oh, I think I said something that's going to be
silly."
Yeah.
But it was a loaded question. The guy said to me, he didn't say if, he didn't
say when,
he just said, "Well, now that Johnny's leaving, what are you going to do with
Ed?" And I was
looking for a joke and that was it, and it's...
I was your joke.
I'm sorry to see that you're still suffering about it many years later.
No, I got over that. No, he was very nice about it. As a matter of fact, when I
came
to work that day, the first message I had was, "Please call David Letterman
immediately,"
and that's why you apologized.
Yeah. And you mentioned your son.
Yes.
You have more than one, right?
Yeah, I have two sons. You have one.
But one is here tonight, isn't it?
I wanted to say something about your staff. You know, it's a reflection of the
star of
the show. You can always tell what the staff is like, and it's just, it gets
down from
the top. It goes down from the top. The senior page tonight, I've never had
such courtesy
in all my life.
I mean, you talk about a guy that took care of me, got me to my dressing room,
found some
spirits for me to, you know...
Spirits?
Spirits!
Spirits!
Spirits!
And what a nice guy. What is his name?
His name is Jeff McMahon.
Is he...
My son, Jeff!
Hey, pal.
How are you?
Good-looking kid.
He is a good-looking kid.
He's a very attractive kid.
I'm very proud of him.
Does he want to stay in the show business?
He wants to be in sports. He wants to be in sports programming and maybe get on
the air.
He did some radio disc jockey work like you and I did in the early days.
What do you know that, Jeff?
What do you know about yard work?
No, no, no, no.
Yeah, nice of Jeff to be here and take care of you tonight.
We'll go away.
We'll be right back.
Ed McMahon and the son Jeff.
All right.
Ed McMahon and the son Jeff.
You know, you're traveling with a beautiful entourage of beautiful women and it
turns out they're all your family.
Yes.
I met your granddaughter?
Yeah, ma'am.
Oh, thank you.
Alexandra.
She's lovely, yeah.
Yeah, ma'am.
Oh, thank you.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Yeah, ma'am.
Oh, thank you.
Alexandra.
She's lovely, yeah.
And my two daughters are here, Linda and Claudia and my lovely wife, Victoria,
up in the front row there.
That's a handsome, handsome looking family.
Jeffrey was able to give them nice seats.
Tell me about the show, Star Search. What is the deal on this?
What it is, we're going out in eight categories of talent. We have male singer,
female singer, actor, actress, comedian,
group, we're a group here with small groups, and we have a spokesmodel.
What is a spokesmodel?
Spokesmodel is a Christie Brinkley.
Happened to be my idea.
I said, you know, one of the finest and best jobs in the world is to be a
spokesmodel.
You make more money than anybody else in the business.
Oh, yeah, a lot of them.
And a lot of these girls go on to be big stars.
Lauren Hutton and Cheryl Teague, you know, all the people that have been
successful, Jacqueline Smith.
So we're looking for that girl, a girl that can not only look pretty, but can
also speak and sell a product.
The Maybelline girl, you know, the cover girl.
So we have that category.
At the end of the competition in 26 weeks, that's what's nice.
We have 26 weeks firm.
That's hard to get anymore.
We're on 186 stations.
And we have 26.
At the end of the 26 weeks, each category, the winner gets $100,000.
Now, that's a lot of money for somebody just starting out in this business.
A hundred grand?
You got that in Indianapolis, didn't you?
Oh, my.
Oh, my.
Oh, my.
That's good dough.
They're paid every time they're on.
It's $2,000 a shot.
And, of course, they get the exposure.
Yeah.
But it's fun.
It's good to see all these young people.
And the talent is incredible.
I think you have a little clip you're going to show.
You'll see there's a young man who sings on this show that tears everybody's
heart out.
Okay.
The show is Star Search.
Star Search.
You're the star of the show.
Well, I would say the host.
The host.
Yeah, all right.
Let's not get crazy.
I mean, they got to do that.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, here she is in her photo session.
Alison Grizzo.
My father left home when I was in second grade.
Don't get me wrong, my father never cheated on my mother.
Used to cheat on me.
Used to pick up other kids after school.
Take them to the zoo.
Take them to play ball.
One day he came to me.
He says, look, Dom, I got a level with you, babe.
I met another kid.
No, I am a-changing.
I get my life together now.
We're all going for $100,000 on Star Search.
Wow.
How's that?
Is that good talent?
What is a category with those thugs with sticks?
You're going to give those guys $100,000?
They are the footlockers.
They do that stop dancing, you know, that hesitation dance.
Yeah, they're dancers.
That's a dance category.
And they have those weapons.
Well, that's part of it.
The tons.
Yes.
And then the, what do you call it?
Spokesmodels.
Spokesmodels.
Nice, yeah.
Yeah, that's the interesting category.
I thought you'd get interested in that, you know.
That's very nice.
There's not more in life than just owning a dog named Bob.
Now, there's another show that's very important in addition to Star Search.
It's coming up Monday.
The Tonight Show.
Monday night.
We have a prime.
I think we're on right after us.
Oh, the whole schedule has been tipped on its ear.
We are next Monday night, 9:00 to 11:00 Eastern Time, prime time.
A two-hour retrospective of all the highlights of the past several years of The
Tonight Show.
It's our 21st anniversary.
And Johnny and I celebrated a nice anniversary.
Before we came over here to work on tonight, we worked on a daytime show, Who
Do You Trust?
And we did four years or so.
On October 13th, we have our Silver Jubilee, 25 years.
That's amazing.
Very impressive.
You know, if you consider, and I know a little bit about what I'm saying here.
We've been on the air a year in, what, a month?
How was it?
It went on in the late 50s.
Two years in February.
Almost two years.
Two years in February.
And it's very difficult.
You guys have been on the air for 21 years with The Tonight Show.
Right.
Will that ever, nobody will ever come close to that.
I don't believe so, no.
Prior to that, you know, the holding record was like four years.
Yeah.
Steve Allen did four years.
Partied about four years.
And when Broadway opened house, Jerry Lester, he did about four years.
And I thought that's all we were gonna do when we started out.
Sure.
And Lord knows, I don't know what they're gonna give next year.
Alaska, I guess.
Yeah.
But I mean, in any other category of show.
No, no.
It's just unbelievable, unheard of.
You know, it's funny when they celebrate, you know, they have these parties
like the
200th episode.
Yeah.
They'll have a party, big Hollywood party.
Johnny and I passed 5,000 shows several months ago.
Good heavens.
Very impressive.
Yeah.
Ed, nice to see you again.
Thank you, pal.
Good luck.
And you know, people actually write into the show a lot, and they want to know
personal
things about you, and you never say anything about yourself personally.
No, that's right.
I don't like to talk about myself.
So I thought, since I am on the show right now, I might take this opportunity
to answer
personal questions about you, if anyone had my thoughts.
Didn't Ed have some more kids we were gonna introduce, Barry?
No, I guess that's all right.
Sure.
Is that all right?
Sure, if you don't mind.
I don't mind.
Sure.
Okay, you sure it's all right?
Fine.
Do you have any questions of a personal nature that they might want answered
about Dave?
Is he funny all the time?
Well, no, you really couldn't say he's funny all the time.
He's, you know, he's occasionally funny, but he's like any ordinary human being.
He's funny some of the time.
He's serious some of the time.
He's insecure a lot of the time.
Okay.
Thank you very much, sir.
Nice question.
Does he get recognized a lot, and does it disrupt your lives much?
Uh, well, he's getting recognized increasingly more as the show is on the air
more.
Uh, yeah, no, it doesn't disrupt our lives very much, no.
Thank you very much for the question.
Thank you.
Things are not bad.
No.
Yeah.
Uh, what's he like in bed?
I think I can answer that.
Well, actually, I do have some recent findings that I thought I could share
with you.
- No!

Spokesmodel is a Christie Brinkley.

And a lot of these girls go on to be big stars.
Lauren Hutton and Cheryl Teague, you know, all the people that have been

So we're looking for that girl, a girl that can not only look pretty, but can
also speak and sell a product.
The Maybelline girl, you know, the cover girl.
So we have that category.
At the end of the competition in 26 weeks, that's what's nice.

But it's fun.
It's good to see all these young people.
And the talent is incredible.
I think you have a little clip you're going to show.
You'll see there's a young man who sings on this show that tears everybody's
heart out.
Okay.
The show is Star Search.

Used to pick up other kids after school.
Take them to the zoo.
Take them to play ball.
One day he came to me.
He says, look, Dom, I got a level with you, babe.
I met another kid.

You're going to give those guys $100,000?
