I feel like I'm the most popular English professor on campus.
That's what I feel like.
The attendance is very special.
I appreciate it.
Oh, oh.
Today, by the way, of course, as you know, is the first day of spring.
Technically known as the class.
Anybody know what it is?
The Vernal Equinox.
The what?
Vernal Equinox.
The Vernal Equinox.
No, no.
That's the player for the Denver Nuggets who won't stand up for the National
Anthem, isn't it?
I was walking through Central Park this morning, and man, you can sure tell it's
spring here
in New York City.
I saw a robin giving a squirrel a lap dance.
By the way, that'll be on the midterm.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
All of this is going to be on the midterm.
Oh, I love being here at the student center.
Earlier today in Los Angeles, California, a jury convicted the Menendez
brothers of first-degree murder.
Did you folks hear about that?
Convicted the Menendez brothers.
You know, I'm looking at the bright side of this.
I guess it's a good thing that, you know, their parents didn't have to be there
to see that.
So that's the good side of things.
Everyone could get an incomplete.
One more outburst like that.
Everyone could get an incomplete.
Oh, big news.
Bob Dole has cinched up the Republican nomination.
He won enough delegates through the primary system.
He's going to be the Republican nominee for the race for president in November.
But, you know, it's odd.
Pat Buchanan, in spite of this, continues to campaign.
And I'm thinking, well, isn't this a little like me renting a tuxedo for Monday
night's Academy Awards?
You know, just think about it.
Just a little -- a little -- a little --
You're --
Stop it.
You're very all right?
You're very all right?
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
Very good.
We have a -- we have a blockbuster of a program right out here in the lobby of
the theater building.
Barbara Walters.
Kids, Barbara Walters will be with us.
How are you?
Halle Berry and -- oh, Ray Charles will be on the program this evening.
Now, give me a favor, ladies and gentlemen, say hello to her good friend, Paul
Schaefer.
Where are they?
All right, open up your textbooks to page 87.
You know, we're very excited.
We've been on the air here at CBS for two and a half, almost three years,
and we've had a lovely set.
Here, this is the old set inside the theater.
This is what the old set used to do.
That was the old set.
We went on the air with that almost three years ago,
and it's beautiful when you take a look at it.
What a lovely piece of work.
But no, we said it's time to get us a brand new set.
Now, here, take a look.
This is what the new set will look like.
See, we've added a salad bar.
Added a lovely salad bar.
This is the way this show would look in Russia.
This is how it would look in Moscow.
All right, here.
I tell you what, because we're tearing down the old set,
we're going to do something nice for the citizens of New York City
who have been so very, very supportive and cooperative with us
since we've been here on Broadway.
Do me a favor.
Turn on the camera out there on Broadway tonight, ladies and gentlemen.
Let's take a look.
That's the lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theater.
It's dusk here in Manhattan.
People hustling and bustling to and fro, coming and going.
We're getting a bit of rain.
Look at that guy.
How do you do, sir?
Excuse me.
Pardon me, sir.
May I have your name, please?
Can you hear me?
Hi.
What's your name?
I'm Dan.
Dan, what do you do for a living?
What's that?
I say, what do you do for a living, Dan?
I work in TV, Dave.
What kind of TV work do you do?
Music, television.
Hey, turn around and wave at those guys waving at you.
There you go.
All right, there's some brainpower at work.
All right.
Dan, let me ask you a question.
You say you work for the MTV?
A camera, a camera.
Much music in Canada.
You do what?
It's much music in Canada.
It's like MTV, only it's better.
Oh, Paul, it's the Canadian MTV.
I know about it.
Much music, yeah.
Is it any good?
Yeah, it sucks.
Oh.
Well, there's a vote of confidence.
I tell you what, are you still there?
Yeah, I'm right here, Dan.
Yeah, you know, we're putting in a brand new set.
Now, look at that guy behind you.
Look at that.
But, you know, we're looking for somebody from New York.
Can you do me a favor and find if there's somebody right behind you from New
York, sir?
Are you from New York?
Yeah, I'm from New York.
What is your name, sir?
Matt.
Matt, where in New York are you from?
Oceanside, Long Island.
Oceanside, Long Island.
It's beautiful out there, isn't it?
Wonderful.
Do you go to Hofstra or did you just steal the hat?
I go to Ohio State.
Yeah, Ohio State, okay.
I tell you what, I want you and your new Canadian friend to meet me in the
lobby.
Can you guys come right in here?
Come on in, gentlemen.
There they go.
Who are they?
It's Bob and Matt or somebody.
Come on in.
Here we go.
Oh, man.
Matt?
Dan?
Dan?
Dan?
Dan?
Dan?
Dan?
Dan and Matt.
Matt?
Dan and Matt.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
Now, you actually live in the New York area.
No, I go to Ohio State.
You go to Ohio State, but you're originally from?
Long Island.
Long Island.
But you go to, where aren't you in school now?
We're on spring break.
Spring break.
Oh, that's great.
All your friends are in Florida.
You came here.
Everybody's in Fort Lauderdale.
You're here.
How does that make you feel?
And you, sir, why are you in the United States?
I was here on business interviewing Hootie and the Blowfish.
Hootie?
Well, I'm assuming you're lying, but we're going to let it go.
I'm not.
Yesterday morning.
All right.
So now you go back to Canada.
Where do you work in Canada?
Much music.
I know, I know.
The city, the town, the province.
Toronto.
Toronto.
Oh, one of the great cities of North America.
All right.
I'm going to do something lovely for you guys.
Symbolically, I'm going to give you guys a piece of our old set.
Yes, you can hear the gasp right this way.
Come here.
Come on in.
You can take yours back to Canada, and you can take yours back to Columbus.
Come on in, boys.
Here's the theater.
Look at this.
Look at how beautiful it is.
Look at it.
Look at it.
You see this?
We're tearing all of this down.
Look at this.
All of this being renovated, being remodeled.
I'm going to let you...
Here.
We have it right over here.
Here we go.
Let me just put this...
There.
Take the wheelbarrow.
These are parts of our old set.
It's a two-man job.
Congratulations.
Nice to have you with us.
Good luck back in Toronto.
Here you go.
Pull it on out of here.
There you go.
Pull it.
They can't even figure out a wheelbarrow.
Good luck, boys.
College kids having trouble operating the wheelbarrow.
All right.
Well, we've got to do a commercial.
The show will continue from the lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theater Building with
Barbara Walters.
Come on back, kids.
We'll be right back, kids.
We'll be right back, kids.
We'll be right back, kids.
We'll be right back, kids.
We'll be right back, kids.
