Super Slo-Mo Experiments Collection on Letterman, 1986-90

The End of the Day
Always nice to see you
We're lucky to have you here, Paul
Thank you very much
Despite the fact that you're Canadian
No, well, this guy's been hissing all night
But that's just bad dental work
Well, ladies and gentlemen
If you ever watched sporting events
Any kind of sports
Baseball, football
Aki, bowling, anything
You've seen slow motion instant replay
Even on this program
We've had slow motion instant replay
With our silly little pet tricks
That we all love so greatly
Tonight we're going to demonstrate
A really advanced version of the slow motion machine
Oh, Hal
This will be our director, Hal Gertner
Hal, do you have some
Yes, sir
Oh, I'm so sorry, Hal
Show them an example
Of the super extra slow motion technology
We're going to demonstrate here tonight
Watch the monitors, folks
And see what we're up to here
Okay, Hal, just roll it now
All right, here it comes
Very, very slowly it comes in
You can see the stitches
As they rotate around the ball
Nicely done
Thank you very much, Hal
So tonight
We're going to test
Some of this equipment
And actually
We're going to do some things
With this
And show you how that equipment
Works played back
Are we all set?
All right
We'll just start here
That's all right
Go ahead
Put it right down there
Oh, this will be exciting
This is
I think you're going to enjoy this
First of all
We have a
Is this mousetrap all set?
Okay, it's a mousetrap
Put it right there
Let me move some of this stuff
Okay, Paul, maybe a drum roll
Or something
From Steve
Okay
And a hot dog
We all set?
Okay
Okay, now
Let's take a look at that
In slow motion
With the extra
Super duper
Here it is
The mousetrap
The hot dog
Boom
Thank you, Rabbi
Now
All right
I'll just hang this up
Over there
There you go
A model airplane
And a baseball bat
I just throw this up
And hit it
All right
Where do you want me to stand?
Anywhere?
Is this good?
Take a look at that
See what that looks like
In slow motion
Instant replay
There it is
Oh
Ooh
That's a
That's a tough flight
If you've ever been
On board one of those
The bowling ball
And pudding
What kind of pudding
Do we have here?
It is butterscotch
It's butterscotch pudding
Okay
Here's the bowling ball
You ready, Carl?
Ready
Oh
Oh, God
Woo
Yeah
See
Yes, sir
Am I right?
This is comedy, isn't it?
Okay, okay, Hal
Let's take a look at this job
If we can
Here it is
There's the pudding
And the ball
Mmm
Yeah
Mmm
And he left the 710
All right
Now where are we going, Kev?
The, uh, whoo
Feel like Gump Worsley
Oh, it's a kick save
All right
Oh
I can't move it
All right
It's the, uh
How many times has this happened
At a reception?
Somebody walks in
The wedding cake
And the fire extinguisher
First of all
Let me
Let me make sure
This is working
Yes
It's empty
Oh, this is
This is actually
A fire violation, isn't it?
All right
Well, you can't
No, the noise won't do anything
Well, let's try it anyway
You know
You know
Ladies and gentlemen
In all fairness
It's not like we had
The entire day
To make sure this was loaded
All right
Let's
Are you ready, Carl?
Ready.
Yeah.
I feel like Gallagher.
Now we have a dog.
Bring the dog in.
What is the dog's name?
Come on.
What is your name, ma'am?
Bambi.
Your name is Bambi?
Yes.
And what is the dog's name?
Noodles.
Bambi and Noodles.
I've seen your show Saturday mornings here on NBC.
What kind of dog is Noodles?
A mixed breed.
A mixed breed.
And you're going to put Noodles in the water and we're going to watch how the
dog dries
himself up.
It's all right.
You can do this.
Paul, will you get the Zamboni out here, please?
Okay.
Noodles.
Now, Noodles doesn't mind the bath, does he?
No.
No.
He's a sweet dog.
Hi, Noodles.
How are you?
By the way, did you get some of that wedding cake?
I'm all right.
Okay.
Okay.
Now, be very careful.
It's awfully slippery here.
And GE doesn't need a lawsuit already.
Now, let's move this out of the way.
Okay.
Now, Noodles will dry off and we'll see it in slow motion.
Come on, Noodles.
Come on.
There you go.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That was it.
Noodles doesn't want to tire himself out.
Thank you very much, Bambi.
Thank you very much, Noodles.
There it is in slow motion.
Oh, that's pretty neat.
Okay.
We're going to need more eggs for this.
We've only got a half a dozen here.
All right.
Turn on the fan.
First of all, first of all, we have to make sure these eggs aren't hard-boiled.
So, Paul, will you check and see if those are hard-boiled or not?
Oh!
Oh!
Those are fresh?
They're raw.
All right.
All right.
Turn on the fan and here we go.
You all set, Carl?
Yes.
We're demonstrating some advanced television technology tonight.
All right.
Stand back, gentlemen.
Oh, no.
Slow the fan down a little bit if you...
Wait a minute.
What happened to the...
Oh!
My God.
What happened to...
Yeah.
See, details we really can't bother with because we have other things to worry
about here at NBC.
We've got to get somebody to blow-dry Michael Landon's hair and...
Sorry, Tony.
Do what?
I've got to get a tower.
All right.
It is a...
Yeah, it must be a G.E. fan.
Yeah.
All right.
But you know, ladies and gentlemen, sometimes you can take advantage of a pause
like this to
to sort of, well...
It's up to the power, Tony.
Sort of reflect on your busy day's activities.
All right.
You all set?
Okay.
Eggs in a fan, ladies and gentlemen.
You won't see this on the CBS Late Movie.
Here we go.
One.
Two.
Oh!
Three.
One.
Alright. Let's see. There it is. Thank you very much. There it is. And did it
hit it yet already? That's it?
Oh, yeah. Not... Oh, God. Oh, okay. It's apparently one of those heavy-duty
fans. Did we see the whole thing? We missed the eggs? All right. You want me to
try some new eggs or what? We have the eggs? Oh, there's this one. And I didn't
see anything. Oh, there it is. Oh, that was pretty good. All right.
Let's just try a couple more for the heck of a... Ooh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. That's
it. That's it. You got a great show. Thank you very much. Thank you.
We got a terrific show tonight. Terry Garr is here. Lynette Woodard, the first
female Harlem Globes rider. And George Miller. Come on back.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Ooh. What a... What a terrible...
Terrible mess. That was nice, though. Did you enjoy that, Paul? Nice. I had a
good time.
A scientific experiment. A real significant broadcast application. Look at this.
State-of-the-art blowgun.
Oh, wait. We have a young lady in the audience. How do you do, ma'am? What is
your name?
My name's Pat Kennedy. Pat, where are you from? I'm from Narragansett, Rhode
Island. Oh, that's a lovely community. What do you do for a living? You're not
a clamor, are you?
Uh, no. No, I work at the University of Rhode Island. Oh, I see. What do you...
You teach up there?
Uh, no. I'm assistant to the dean. Uh-huh. And, uh, how do you like... How do
you... Ladies and gentlemen, pay no attention to this stuff right back here.
Uh, this has nothing to do with the joke, okay? What you're seeing here. Uh,
yes, Pat, what is your question?
Well, my question is, Dave, I really liked your super slow-mo segments. Uh-huh.
Uh, especially when you threw the eggs into the tabletop fan. What a
coincidence, Pat.
Uh, so you would like us to try it maybe with a little larger fan. Yeah, well,
the problem is you couldn't see it really well.
That's right, okay. Good Lord, we've anticipated her every whim.
Uh, okay, Pat, we'll give it a try. Thank you very much. Well, thank you.
Uh, cover this stuff up, boys, and, uh... Paul, come over here.
Are we all right? We have time for this?
All right, now we have a choice, Paul. We have, uh, come here, don't stand back
there.
We can either, we can either lob a dozen eggs in there, or we can, we can toss
a pie.
We have cherry pie and a cream pie. What do you think?
All right, all right. We can only do it, uh, all right, do both, I guess.
You want the pie? Let's go. Okay.
And this is a bowl of eggs. All right. Okay, we all set?
Yeah. All right, now stand over there.
Can I throw a bowl in there?
Yeah, no, no, I'll just, I'll just toss. Let me go over this way.
You mind?
Okay.
Okay.
Now we have to...
Ready?
Ready?
No, no, do it this way.
One, two, three.
Oh! Oh! Oh! God! Oh, jeez. Oh! Are you all right? I'm behind. Oh! I'm shot, bro.
No, let's, uh...
Can we see it in the instant replay? Oh, here comes instant. There goes the...
There's the fan. Oh! Oh, that's great. Use that sign. Thank you. Very nice
question, Pat.
I tell you, we're going to hose off the audience. We'll be right back, folks.
Remember, Alec Guinness is here tonight.
Oh, my God. I'm sure it is.
Oh, God.
Thank you. You all right, Paul?
That's the craziest thing I've ever done in my life.
Thanks for having me. What a coincidence that this woman at random in the
audience stands up, requests to see something like that, and we have this
airplane engine here.
But let's admit it. Neither of us were at the rehearsal.
No, I was at the rehearsal.
Did you not go behind the fan?
No, no, you don't do it behind the fan. You stand in front of the fan.
Well, thank you very much.
Really?
Look, they're delivering baked goods here.
How come...
How come you didn't get hit by a million eggs like I did?
No, I got hit a little bit. I don't know what happened.
You stood in front of the fan?
We got hit a little bit, yeah.
By, uh...
Maybe I should have been at the rehearsal.
Well, please, Paul, please. I'm pleading with you to come to these meetings and
rehearsals.
Well, is this what it takes?
My first...
We're going to show you another experiment here with the Super Sports Slow
Motion Camera.
Here's what it looks like when you're watching a basketball game or a baseball
game or a football game or whatever they've got loaded up.
There it is.
Ultra Slow Motion, as they say you can see the stitches turning over on the
baseball.
And so we're going to experiment with that tonight.
What do we start with?
Oh, the spit take. Here we go.
Where do I do this? Into what? Right here? Through this man right here?
Paul.
Oh, we need Paul for this?
Paul, can you come over and help us with this?
Alright, and we're going to then slow it down.
Hurry up, Paul. Hurry up.
Just grab your little water there.
Alright, do this.
Then we'll slow it down and show you what it looks like.
Go right ahead, Paul.
Okay. Dave, last night's show was hilarious.
Paul, we weren't on last night.
Uh, I meant Beverly Hills Manor.
Okay, now, sorry.
Now, let's take a look and see what that looks like and...
Slow motion, slow motion.
There it is.
Thank you very much, Paul.
Slow motion comedy.
Slow motion comedy.
Alright, oh, ask the gentleman in the band to come over.
We're going to shoot darts now.
And then we'll slow that down.
Yeah, come on, there you are, Sid.
Have one of those.
Sure, hurry.
Eddie, come on up.
You got time for this?
Oh, Eddie's got to put out a butt he's got going back there.
That's a classy touch, Eddie, for the kids looking in tonight.
Okay.
Now, just shoot right at this man behind the plexiglass wall there and then we'll
slow that down.
Everybody line up.
Get in there, Paul.
Okay, on like three.
One, two, three.
Okay.
Thank you very much, gentlemen.
We'll take a look at that in slow motion.
Here it comes now.
There they are.
And...
And...
Yeah, okay.
Well, thank you so much.
Thank you.
Now, oh, the potato chips.
Okay, we're going to bust open some potato chips with high pressure air.
Thank you.
Just put it right in there.
Ready?
Turn it on.
Here we go.
Let's see what that looks like.
There it is.
It explodes.
That's pretty nice.
Turn it on to the bats.
Okay.
Turn it on to the bats.
All right.
Take a look at that now and see what that appears to be like in slow motion.
Instant replay, ladies and gentlemen.
The cantaloupe and the bat.
There we go.
Yeah!
But anyway, buddy, that would have rolled to the wall, don't you think?
Okay.
And paint balloons?
All right.
It's fine entertainment, isn't it?
All right.
Now, what's the best way to do this?
Just the old...
Oh.
Didn't work?
Let me try one more and then we'll move on if that didn'
