Hi, I'm Eric Stengel. I'm Justin Stengel, how are you?
We are the Head Writers and Executive Producers here at The Late Show with
David Letterman.
The Late Show with David Letterman.
And this is the behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Late Show Top 10
list for the 2011 Grammy Awards.
Grammy Awards.
Hi, I'm Vinny Favalli, Vice President of Late Night for CBS East Coast.
The Grammys are on CBS every year, and every year the Grammy producers hope
that they're going to get Dave on the show.
The problem is we are taping, we're in production, so they ask for the next
best thing, which in this case is a Top 10.
You know, when we agreed to do the Top 10 list, we had to come up with a Top 10
topic.
So we got the writers together and we, you know, started writing Top 10 jokes.
Dave wrote a bunch of his own, Dave cut jokes, Dave rewrote jokes, and we all
sort of worked out the list together.
Everybody has a different sense of humor and a different sensibility.
So when you're kind of trying to think of the right Justin Bieber joke, it's
funny.
One person has a joke and it's like, "Wow, that's funny."
And then somebody else has a different take and a different take and a
different take.
And you kind of see how each person brings something different to the room or
to the show as a whole.
And it's really a lot of fun when we get to work on a project like this.
So we've been writing Top 10 jokes all day.
And we have a list right now that's approved by Dave.
Eric is about to run through it and Jerry Foley, our director downstairs.
Yeah, let's watch what happens.
This is the Top 10 rehearsal.
Hello everyone, I hope you're enjoying tonight's Grammy Awards.
There have been a lot of surprises so far.
Here we have the Top 10 surprises at the 2011 Grammy Awards.
Here we go, number 10.
I thought it went pretty well.
Depending on that phone call right there, we'll see.
I'm glad you took my suggestion.
Yeah.
He doesn't even work here.
Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen.
How did I say it?
My good friend Joanne Worley!
Welcome to the Ed Sullivan Theater.
How's everybody doing from here to see you?
I'm coming to here in 10.
Okay.
Stand by 92.
9, 4, 8, 7, 6, 7, 8, roll.
And roll 92.
92's on the roll.
4, 3, 2, 1, music out.
From New York, the greatest city in the world.
It's the Late Show with David Letterman.
We have to do a spatial Top 10 list now for the Grammys.
When are they?
Sunday.
Sunday!
Sunday!
Various people have come to me and said,
"Dave, for the special Grammy Top 10 now,
Walter and Jay will be wandering around during the theater
shooting videotape during the show."
And I said, "Fine."
And I'm telling you, if I heard this once,
I heard it a dozen times.
Yeah.
So I knew to expect Walter and Jay
wandering around with their cameras.
Yes.
Ever since I've come in the damn door,
Walter and Jay have been up my nose with those stinking cameras.
Yeah.
They are the opposite of wandering around.
They're like pickpockets.
I open the door and the first thing I see,
and God forbid, I'm sorry in advance.
The first thing I say is,
"Hey."
That's the first thing I say.
I'm sorry.
All right.
You should say.
That's why I walked through the door.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it was a cheerful greeting.
That's fine.
Yeah.
And I look up and there's Jay.
Oh.
With the thing right there.
So now I realize I've said that on the thing.
Yeah.
Hello, YouTube.
Hello.
Okay.
So we have to do this special top 10 list.
Why don't you guys just come right up here and sit on my lap?
Ladies and gentlemen, here's tonight's special Grammy top 10 list.
Let's go.
Hello.
As soon as you hear I've dropped dead,
go to the computer and you'll see all of this.
That's the web, right.
