if we have time a little bit later i'd like to get right in on tight there with
you when you
when you empty that spit valve okay so let us know let us know when you get a
load ready
um all right all right monday on the uh program boys and girls uh sondra bernhardt
will be here
also uh tom tom club and uh oh stupid human tricks yes sir
you know now a few weeks ago we introduced a brand new running character here
on the late
night program uh and he's really gone crazy he's captured the imagination of
viewers around the
world it's a p-boy and what happened yeah see what i tell you and what happens
is p-boy comes in and
pelts people with frozen peas and and it's been so gratifying and exciting to
be a part of this
with that you know what p-boy needs now is some sort of theme music so with
complete deference and
respect to paul schaefer thank you we went right to the best in the business we
went over to see
marvin hamlish to get us a theme for p-boy
i don't need to tell you about the this man's credits
i don't need to tell you folks about uh p-boy and the wonder that it is
and now of course here is uh p-boy marvin have you met people come in here
an honor can i say maybe maybe you should stand off the carpet do you mind to
stand off the carpet
that's good so anyway so but because we're dealing with what i think could be a
unique theatrical
moment we'll go into the other room all right all right so here we go so we got
to go and p-boy
marvin told me that everything in this uh house is inventoried no funny stuff
all right we want to
create the impression for the studio audience and the home viewers that
something unbelievable exciting an
explosion of excitement is just you're the fuse that triggers the explosion
that is uh p-boy are you
all right i'm i'm fine it needs to be short it needs to be punchy it needs to
be ba-da-ba-da-ba-boom
peace peace peace peace we don't want something slow we don't want to be the
peace yeah no we want to
wait a minute what was that how did that go give me the peace what about a big
uh beginning in the
beginning like something like uh give me an a yeah give me a b give me a p yeah
give me a p
i won't get carrots oh that's not for me oh honey baby what i want is a p
i'm just asking did you have you made a pact with the devil mark that's
unbelievable i want to remind
you of a couple of things first of all p-boy begins every appearance with a
whistle let's hear the
whistle oh let's hear the whistle because we might be able to put something
yeah it might work right now
with the a the b are you ready yes we're ready okay you know he travels in a
specially built car seat
well maybe what should happen is we should do give me an a give me a b give me
a and then he'll do his
whistle can you do that can you do that in the same time you know what i'm
saying so where we would
have said p it'll be really the whistle okay i got it okay all right let's try
it again give me an a
a give me a b b give me a
i think that's enough whistle we just need one whistle we don't have to go berserk
here you know what i mean
it's not like give me a it's not called whistle boy it's just people hey wait a
minute did somebody
say whistle boy look at him now there's one there's two no there's three give
me a p i think you're
on the right track absolutely you know something maybe it's it's it's um i wish
he would stay and
listen to my please but at least he's left his peas oh so i think there's
something there why don't you
wait till mr hamlet's cues you on yeah yeah right all right marvin i'm sorry
are you comfortable
with this huh i'm fine uh do you have any suggestions yeah uh uh all right okay
marvin this
is great we're very excited very excited all right uh thanks a lot we'll let
you get back to work
okay right all right come on p-boy we're out of here see you a pleasure really
see you friday
hey there what about me it's been great having dave and p yeah yeah yeah yeah

ladies and gentlemen mr marvin hamlish marvin

hey boy can't you see boy all the great joy that you spread
everyone waits so don't hesitate we love it when you aim right for our head
some think you look funny but
i don't think you're going to try to hide it that's simply not true
so if someone's going to throw up
me at me i don't care as long as it's
gee i'm glad that it's gosh i'm glad that it's you
you're right back

of two talented and dear old
friends do me a favor now first say hello to an academy award winner a pulitzer
prize winner a tony
award winner and one of the finest composers of our day please welcome marvin
hamlish marvin
who are you a year ago you you asked me to write a song for a special friend
who
who ran on to your show and stole the hearts of people everywhere his name p-boy
and this is his song
is
is
is
is
is
one week ago tonight marvin hamlish was in las vegas working with barbara streisand
tonight he's here with p-boy ah that's show business isn't it uh we're going to
sweep up the
peas do a commercial and when we come back drew carey will join us come on back
oh my hey how are ya nice to see ya we'll be sweeping peas out of this place
for the next six
months look at that big pile of peas over there into the vienna and you know
coincidentally peas and
ham is what i have every easter really yeah exactly not something now for those
of you who know p-boy
at our old show p-boy was with us at nbc and that's not the original p-boy
costume nbc wouldn't
let us have the p-boy suit right so we had to build a new p-boy suit and i
noticed as he's
going up the aisle this one's a little short there's a rather unpleasant shot
of p-boy's butt really
sorry yeah that kind of took the edge off of it for me i couldn't really enjoy
it to its fullest
oh my our next guest is a very funny comedian who stars in his own situation
comedy unless he breaks
his leg on a frozen pee coming out here uh the show is called the good life and
it airs on some
other network where they have the original p-suit
Thank you.
