My next guest is one of Britain's top singers and is quickly earning an equally
impressive
reputation here. His single Every Time You Go Away of course is an enormous hit
and this
is his latest album, The Secrets of Association. Please welcome Paul Young.
I don't have to run around, I don't have to stay out all night. I've got to be
a sweet, sweet loving woman and she knows how to treat me right.
Oh my baby, she's all right. I tell you my baby's been out of sight. Now don't
you know she's not some kind of wonderful. Oh, she's some kind of wonderful to
me.
Now when she holds me in her arms, she sets my soul on fire.
And oh, when my baby kisses me, my heart becomes filled with desire.
And when she wraps her loving arms around me, she almost drives me out of my
mind.
I get the most funny feelings inside of me.
Don't you know she's run up and down my spine.
Oh my baby, she's all right.
I tell you my baby's been clean out of sight.
I'm talking about my, some kind of wonder boy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, some kind of wonder boy.
Is there anybody out there, who's got a sweet loving woman like mine?
Well, I know there's people behind here.
But is there anybody out there, who's got a sweet loving woman like mine?
America's in trouble.
Now can I get a witness?
Can I get a witness?
Can I get a witness?
Can I get a witness?
Oh, can I get a witness?
I just need one.
Can I get a witness?
I'm telling you about my baby.
She's like some kind of wonder boy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, I'm telling you about my baby.
She's some kind of wonder boy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Some kind of wonder boy.
Talking about my baby.
Some kind of wonder boy.
I'm telling you, telling you all about my baby.
Some kind of wonder boy.
She makes me feel some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she makes me feel some kind of wonder boy.
I can't help it, which makes me feel some kind of wonder boy.
No, no, no, no, no.
Talking, talking, talking about my baby.
Talking about my baby.
Some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Tell me about my girl.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's some kind of wonder boy.
Oh, she's a wonder boy.
Oh, she's a wonder boy.
Oh, she's a wonder boy.
Oh, she's a wonder boy.
Oh, she's a wonder boy.
Oh, she's a wonder boy.
That was nice.
A place called Pine Knob.
Pine Knob.
You know, Detroit's the Motor City.
That's right, yeah.
I didn't get a chance to see anything.
All my history.
And you're in New York now for a while?
No.
I fly off tomorrow to do Chicago.
You ever been to Chicago before?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, Chicago's a great town.
What does this mean?
The secret of association.
The name of the album.
Absolutely nothing.
Oh, good.
How was it selected for the name of the record?
We were really stuck.
I find it really difficult to find album titles because, I don't know, without
drawing,
if you take the title of a song that's on the album, everybody attaches some
great importance
to it.
Yeah, yeah.
So I thought, I need a title for this one.
And we couldn't come up with anything.
And in the end, I was reading a copy of the Times and there was an advert that
said,
what was it?
"Secretary wanted for associated companies."
Mm-hmm.
So we just jumbled the words around and got secret of association out of that.
Yeah.
Although "Secretary wanted" would have been a good name, too.
Yeah, but...
Um, yeah, because it's supposed to mean something but yet you don't want it to
mislead people
and it's also supposed to be catchy so folks...
Well, it sounds like it means a lot.
Yeah.
So everybody sits and looks at the album sleeve thinking...
It's enigmatic.
Yeah, but it makes people think about the album, which is good.
Uh, what happened to you in Australia?
Did you get hurt?
You've heard.
Yeah, I heard something about it.
Was it a concert and, uh...
Yeah, well, I seem to get plagued with these sort of problems because, um...
I never tell the road crew what I'm gonna do.
One, because I don't know what I'm gonna do when I walk out on the stage.
But there's always something inside of me that says...
What city was this?
Climb up the PA stack or whatever.
And, um, it was in Sydney.
Uh-huh.
And my real stage was getting shipped over to America because we'd just done
the other half of the world.
We'd been to, uh, Europe and places around there.
We did Japan and Australia with a makeshift set.
So the first night we played Sydney, I went out there and my feet were sticking
to the floor
and every time I moved I thought I was gonna twist my ankles.
So I said, "Can you clean the stage a bit?"
You know, so they polished it and the next night I went out there.
I went running out there on me knees, did a skid on me knees straight out,
straight off the stage
and dropped straight into the audience.
Like an aircraft carrier, just boom, into the drink.
That sort of thing.
And then you just keep going and go, whoop, straight off the side.
And, um...
Were you injured?
Yeah, I knocked a rib out of the backbone and I had to have this, um, chiropractor
come on the road.
And he kept pushing it in, um, because I kept trying to do the same show every
time I did that.
In the wings every few minutes, run out and push it back in?
Yeah.
At the end of the L.A. show, I said, "It's come out again, it's come out again."
So he laid it down and he pushed it back in.
And he came out on the road for five days.
Oh, you're better now?
No.
Oh, good.
But you're off to Chicago.
Well, have fun in the, uh, the Windy, it's the Windy City, you know.
Yeah, it just blew in from Windy City.
All right.
Nice to see you, Paul.
Thank you very much.
And we'll, uh, be right back after a commercial here, folks, for the world.
