Okay, hi, welcome back to the big program.
You wrote that song, right?
I did.
Did you get a lot of money from that thing?
None, none.
No, yeah, yeah.
But that's like a legitimate rock and roll classic, isn't it?
Yeah, I mean, when Jose Feliciano did it, then everybody started doing it.
Yeah, well, that's...
You know, I have a version.
I did a version a couple of years ago.
Yeah, I went down to Nashville and did it.
It's very nice.
And were you and Jim friends?
Did you get along well with him?
Oh, yeah, you know, until he started drinking, of course.
Oh, he drank?
On the program tonight, oh, you know who's going to be here.
Alan Havy and then we have a clergyman, Havy.
Who keeps saying Havy?
Who said that?
Did you say that, Morty?
I said it.
Oh, okay.
Huh, what?
I share the blame.
Yeah, okay.
All right.
You know, we've done close to 2,000 shows.
At least.
Yeah.
Some suck, some blow, some eat.
Okay?
That's right.
So, wait a minute.
They can't all be great, huh?
Close to 2,000 shows.
That's right.
Some suck, some blow, some eat.
That's right.
Go ahead.
That's right.
Some of them do.
They can't.
What I'm saying is...
Go ahead.
Go ahead.
Let me tell you about Monday's program.
Ah.
Connie Chung, the evil temptress from CBS, will be here.
Mario Andretti and comedian Jake Johansson.
That'll be the big program on Monday.
Should be great.
Yeah.
Yeah, on Monday.
You know, just this week, kids, we were lucky enough to have a brand-new
employee join our late-night staff.
Now, through the miracle of videotape, let's join Sheila Rogers on her first
day on the job here at NBC.
Oh, this will be her.
This will probably be her right here.
Hi, how are you?
Hi.
I'm Dave Letterman.
Nice to see you.
Who are you?
Sheila Rogers.
This is Sheila Rogers, and this is your first day with us, isn't it?
First day here.
Yeah.
And what will you be doing for us?
I'll be booking talent for you.
Booking talent for us.
Great.
And what did you do before you came here?
I worked at Rolling Stone.
Rolling Stone Magazine.
Yeah.
Very, very hip.
Vita, come on in.
This is Vita, one of the security guards.
This is Sheila Rogers.
Go ahead.
Do whatever you have to do.
Will I go through this every day?
All right, if you're lucky.
All right, Vita.
That's great.
Thank you very much.
Okay.
Get ready for real fun now.
All right, Sheila, let me show you my office.
This is my assistant, Rose.
This is Sheila Rogers.
Hi, nice to see you.
Any messages?
Yeah, your mom called.
She's at a monkey chow.
Okay, I'll call her back.
Here you go.
Thank you.
Just look right in there.
Okay, that's good.
Thanks a lot, Rose.
Sure.
Just take the blood pressure.
Just take the blood pressure.
We're in kind of a hurry.
We had her in the gown upstairs.
Everything seemed to be okay.
Sheila, I want to take a second here to introduce you to our producer, Robert
Morton, unless he's having lunch with Lou Wasserman.
Hey, Morty.
I want you to say hello to Sheila Rogers, our new talent coordinator, Robert.
All right, nice to see you.
We'll talk to you later.
See you.
All righty.
Bye-bye.
See, that one's Robert.
He's the producer of the show.
Wait one second.
Hey, Morty.
Oh, man, that's a pretty one.
There you go.
There.
Oh, God, help me.
I loves the waffles.
I don't think I can say it without inflection.
God, help me.
I loves the waffles.
God, help me.
I loves the waffles.
I don't know what the hell that is.
Okay, Sheila, I want you to meet now a very good friend of ours.
He's a director, Hal Gurney.
This is Hal's office right here.
Hi, Hal.
Say hello to Sheila Rogers.
Hello, Mr. Gurney.
Hal's been in a deep state of confusion since the Super Bowl.
We don't know why.
Sheila, do you like frozen yogurt?
Very much.
Oh, man, I love it.
Here's how you can get it free if the commissary's not too crowded.
Okay, right.
Turn it on.
I want to introduce you to our associate producer.
This is Jude Brennan.
Very important moment on the side.
Lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace, lace,
lace, lace, lace, lace.
Okay, we'll come back later.
I think they're having a budget meeting.
All right, Sheila, I don't know if anybody talked to you about your pay, your
salary, your annual take-home fee,
but this is where we determine it.
Here, give me your coat.
Rose, bring me the shot put.
Well, you get the idea.
All right, time to our way up to 50.
This is how I started.
Go ahead.
Good luck.
One shot.
Here we go.
Oh, oh!
All right, well, it went down just under 10, so we'll start you around 8-5 if
that's okay.
Oh, God help me.
I love the waffles.
All right, there.
So, now, we'll do a commercial.
We'll be back with Alan Hazy.
