Wow. Nice to see you.
Our next guest has been sitting in with the band all evening.
You saw him earlier over there enjoying a beverage.
He is a Grammy award-winning performer and a extra talented musician.
I have a copy of his most recent CD.
This has been out for a while, hasn't it, Bruce?
Yeah, it's been out for a little bit.
How long has it been out?
Hang on, about seven months, six, seven months.
Well, what are you loafing? You goofing off?
Not hardly.
How about some new product? Let's go.
Time for some new music.
Absolutely. Get you a little more money. You have all the money now.
Excuse me, Dave.
Yeah.
I apologize for all my shortcomings.
Anyway, this one, which is a great compilation of work,
his most recent effort, seven or eight months old,
is called Harbor Lights.
Ladies and gentlemen, here he is, Bruce Hornsby.
Well, he came from town with a strong bull.
With flashes and moves for the worshipful.
Well, show the moves from side to side.
It'll go over your head and dot your eyes, dot your eyes.
Hey.
Well, every night about four or ten,
I'm on the middle of Jews and some of them.
People would gather from miles around
to see the mighty rainbow knock them down.
Well, knock them down, yeah, yeah.
Well, he pulled up around the back.
Folks say that the rainbow's Cadillac.
Well, fancy shirts and shorts are planned.
Hey, they're all the way.
Hey, they're all the way.
Hey, they're all the way.

Hey, they're all the way.
Hey, how you doing?
Bruce Harnsby, thank you very much for being with us tonight.
My pleasure.
We enjoyed having you all evening and certainly enjoyed the song from your
brand new album.
You spent some of the time recently touring with the Grateful Dead as just a
member of
the band, right?
Right.
You're friends with those guys.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
We party.
Do you really?
Yes, we do.
Well, you tell me about that.
Oh, don't get me started.
It's a good party.
How did that come about?
Well, we used to play, our first record sort of went a long way in a hurry, and
we had
to become headliners on one record.
Right.
Nine songs.
So we had to flesh out a longer show with covers.
We started playing some dead tunes.
I used to play in my older brother's Grateful Dead cover bands, fraternity
parties, grain
alcohol parties.
You know that, Dave.
Oh, wow.
In college.
So I knew a lot of dead songs.
We'd do some of them.
The Dead Herd, we were doing their songs.
They became fans of the band and asked us to open some shows for them.
It was Ry Cooter, Us and the Dead in Monterey.
It's a pretty good show.
Yeah.
What does that last, about 14 hours?
It's a marathon.
Yeah.
It's a marathon.
It's a great party, though.
The Dead Show is about the best party you can go to, I think.
That's an applicable word.
Anyway, we opened for them every year for about four or five years.
And then Garcia played on my record.
I started sitting in with them, sitting in with them a little more.
It culminated really sadly in the death of Brent Midland and them asking me to
help them through
this very difficult time.
They didn't want to let that stop their momentum.
So I helped them out.
I thought I was just going to do it for about maybe a month or two.
But it was so fun.
It was such a great time that I ended up doing it for about 20 months.
Yeah.
But it's nothing quite like it.
They're great people, great organization.
I can understand, being with the Dead, how time could kind of get away from you.
Yeah, I kind of lost track.
I kind of lost track of it.
That's right.
It's easy.
Maybe it was something they put in the Kool-Aid.
You join them around Christmas.
The next thing you know, it's Labor Day.
It must have been fun for you, though.
It's a lot of work.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, they do three tours a year.
The spring tour, summer and fall.
About three or four weeks of a shot.
And they do different dates around the rest of the year.
So it wasn't that intense.
About 70, 80 shows a year.
I was still able to do my thing.
But finally, I got to the point where my wife and I had twin boys.
I wanted to be home more.
I didn't want to be the absentee father.
Sure.
So I decided to extricate myself from that situation and others.
But I still sit in with them.
I mean, I know most of the tunes.
Yeah.
And it's always great playing with them.
I played with them in RFK Stadium in D.C. about four months ago.
Yeah, I was there.
I played with them.
Oh, yeah.
Really?
Clarinet.
Yeah.
You must have been in the mobile truck though.
We didn't see you on stage.
Nice to have you here.
I hope you have a great holiday season.
You too.
And get to work on another album.
Some bad times.
What are you, just goofing off or what?
Oh, totally.
All right.
Just doing nothing.
We have to do another one of those commercials and we'll be right back, kids.
Okay, ladies and gentlemen, we're out of time.
My thanks to Mr. Hornsby, also Chris Elliott.
We enjoyed having Chris here with his film,
and Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons.
Tomorrow night, it's another blockbuster show for us.
Charles Grodin, Brian Adams, and from the Columbus Zoo, Jack Hanna.
Have a good night. We'll see you tomorrow. Thanks for being here.
Worldwide Pants.
