Darlene Love "Christmas (Baby ... )" Collection on Letterman, 1986-2014 (st.)

Where were you when I needed you?
I want to tell you.
Cody, how are you?
Well, David, this whole name change thing is going very well.
I've gone with one name, as you know.
You started out Simon Le Bon.
Simon Le Bon was my first choice.
And then you went to...
Well, now it's just a one name thing, like all the greats, you know, the people
who work
Vegas, and you only have to see one name on the marquee, a name like Sammy.
Yeah.
Zsa Zsa.
I guess maybe that's two.
Two, actually.
I went with Babbitt, just a one name thing.
And the kids, my friends, my good friends in the Latin community have taken
their own lead
with it.
They're calling me Babito now, which I think is very nice because literally
translated,
it means little Babbitt.
And I think that's just perfect.
How are you, though?
I'm fine.
How's your...
Now, I hear wonderful things about the show you're doing again.
Oh, I'm doing a nutty little show.
So we'll talk about that, but it's going to be a monster hit, isn't it?
Monster hit.
We're opening up tomorrow night at the Bottom Line Club in town.
The show's called Leader of the Pack.
Tribute to the music of Ellie Grenitz, your fabulous songwriter from the 60s,
and she's
still happening now.
And she wrote things like Be My Baby to do Ron Ron.
Is there...
There's not even a small part in this for me, is there?
Are you?
It's just a tiny little...
Could I walk on one?
No, there's nothing for you.
Nothing for me.
I play the comedy lead.
I do a sort of a tour de force in the thing, the comedy lead.
All right.
It's...
Well, congratulations to you, Paul, and I'm looking forward to seeing that.
It's very exciting.
I'm hoping for the best fingers crossed on that.
You're going to have a good weekend?
Weekend's coming up.
Yeah, you're going to have a good one.
Am I going to have a good one?
Yeah, we're opening up this very nutty show.
It's called...
Oh, I already spoke about it.
Leader of the Pack.
Some kind of odd time warp in here.
It all started with the...
What's his name?
Dong Boy up there.
Oh, no, wait a minute.
We'll be having Dr. Ruth Westheimer on the show.
Now, I'm leaving something out, aren't I?
That's it?
Gee, does it still seem like two shows?
Do what?
Oh, of course.
Viewer Mail.
Yeah, that's right.
It's Thursday.
So now, say hello to our friend, Paul, and let's get this thing underway.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
That it is.
I think it stacks up to about one and a half.
One and a half shows?
Great shows.
Good hours.
But it will be great.
It's going to be a solid show.
Solid show.
Those chairs, we go backwards, of course.
Yeah.
It'll be exciting to do.
Just straight into the wall.
Your arm okay?
Looking forward to it.
Yeah, boy, have I had...
Let me just say, if I could take a minute to tell a true, absolutely true story.
As long as it's true, Paul.
You know, I'm doing that nutty Ellie Grennett show, leader of the pack at the
bottom line.
Yeah.
I'm playing just like this constantly, because that's the type of music it is.
My whole...
I developed tendinitis, and I was just going nuts, really.
Couldn't play until Candy, our makeup gal, Candy Corral, she says, you're
playing those
eighth notes wrong, babe.
I said, what do you mean?
She says, well, she's a pianist.
And she explained, you've got to keep the wrist loose.
Started doing that, Candy, and my problems are over.
I can now play two shows a night, different things, running, Candy, save my...
She saved my career.
That's all I can say.
That gorgeous blonde in the dark.
Now, is that show sold out?
If people want to buy tickets, can they still go see you down there, Paul?
See, I don't know.
It's a very hot ticket in town, you know.
All right.
I'm coming down there.
I know.
Last night on this program, everywhere I go, people tell me what a great hit
your show
is.
You've got to come down.
I'm coming down.
Thursday.
We're coming down.
You going to have a good weekend?
I intend to.
Well, I'm going to be working, you know.
Oh, that's right.
This is the last weekend, though, before...
Last weekend down at the bottom line for the back show, yeah.
Tonight is Thursday night, and in addition to all the other wonderful things we
have planned,
it's viewer mail night.
Let me just tidy up here, and then we'll get the show off.
There we go.
Okay, we're all set now?
Ah, Robert Klein is here tonight.
The man with the world's strongest teeth, Joe Ponder, and the lovely Jane Seymour.
All of this and much, much more after you take a look at the show.
Welcome back.
Robert Klein is here, Jane Seymour, and Joe Ponder, the man with the world's
strongest
teeth.
Fascinating gentleman.
What's the name of the song, Paul?
I keep asking, and I'm sorry, I can't remember it.
Christmas Baby, Please Come Home.
It was recorded by Darlene Love.
Great song.
I think we should get her on the show, maybe, next week, and do it.
It's just kind of an all-time year.
It sounds terrific, and...
Thank you.
Good.
Our first guest tonight...
See, I don't know...
You very much.
I don't know either.
All right, this is going to be great.
In 1963, my next guest recorded a song called Christmas Baby, Please Come Home.
It was that very first rock and roll Christmas hit ever.
Yeah.
And has been released as a single every year since.
It is also one of the most popular tunes on this legendary album right here,
Phil Spector's
Christmas album.
There it is, right there.
Ladies and gentlemen, here singing it tonight with our band, please welcome the
one and only
Darlene Love.
Yeah!
Yes, sir. The snow's coming down. Yes, sir. I've worked in it for. Yes, sir. I've
worked in it for the ride. Yes, sir. When you please know the horse. Yes, sir.
The shots left the time. Yes, sir. Are ringing the song. Yes, sir. On every
side. Yes, sir.
Every please know the horse. They're singing take the ball. But it's not like
Christmas. I remember when you were here. And all the thoughts we had left here.
Pretty lights on the trees. I watch as I'm shy. Is she playing with me? Baby,
please love her.
They're singing take the ball.
Boy, it's not like Christmas at all.
Because I remember when you were here. And all the thoughts we had left here.
If there was a way.
You know I won't get this tear.
But it's Christmas Day.
I need you. I need you. I need you. I need you. Baby, please love.
Baby, please love. Baby, please love. Baby, please love. Baby, please love.
Baby, please love. Baby, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Darling, love. Nice job, darling. We'll do a commercial and be right back.
Sounded very nice.
Thank you.
Okay. Nice to have you here. That sounds great.
You know, Paul plays that every year. And I keep saying, what is that song?
What is that song?
And so this year he came and sang it. It was wonderful.
Great.
Nice to have you here. Everything okay with you?
Everything is wonderful.
Thanks for being here. Come back and sing it again next year.
Of course.
I hope you have a good holiday.
My thanks to the folks who are here tonight.
Jay Leno, Pam Shriver, and of course, Darlene Love.
Tomorrow, folks, on the program, Australian cowgirl Sandy Thorne, Rick Moranis,
and Jeff Cesario.
Bring a Covered Dish, won't you?
Thank you very much.
Good night, everybody.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Hi, how are you?
And of course, Ann and Nancy Wilson asking the musical holiday question,
Barracuda?
Our next guest is a wonderful singer who 30 years ago recorded the only rock
and roll Christmas song
that I truly enjoy.
Here now to sing Christmas Baby Please Come Home, our good friend Darlene Love.
Here she is.
Come on up.
Come on up.
The church was the time.
Christmas.
A ringing song.
Christmas.
What a happy sound.
Christmas.
They're with me.
Oh, oh.
They're singing their song.
But it's not like Christmas at all.
