Thank you.
Thank you.
Actually, we would have just finished up with a tap dancer just minutes ago.
Maybe another night, though.
I sense there potentially is a clamor here for the tap dance race.
Now, my next guest made her debut on the international music scene a couple of
years ago
with the huge hit Morning Train, her latest album, of which I have a copy right
here,
A Private Heaven, will be released soon, and she will be touring the U.S. and
Japan
until the end of December.
Please welcome Sheena Easton.
Hi.
How are you?
Nice to see you.
Thank you very much.
Have a seat, Sheena.
This is going to be released soon, is it?
No.
Not going to be released soon.
No, that was released about a year ago.
What have I done?
I made a mistake then, didn't I?
No, you didn't.
I think that the person that probably gives you your information made a mistake.
My new album will be out in about three weeks' time.
And it's sort of...
I'll describe the cover to you.
What did I say?
It's not like this, you know.
It's sort of red, and I'm sitting on it, like, looking like this.
So this is not private heaven?
This is not a private heaven?
No, this is a best-kept secret, which, of course, is in your stores now.
But a private heaven will be coming out in a couple of weeks.
Is this Don't Leave Me This Way, is that the same one that the Thelmy Houston
had before?
I hope not.
Probably a whole different song, then.
I hope so.
How does it go?
How does this one go, Don't Leave Me This Way?
Don't leave me this way, baby.
No, different song.
Well, I'm sorry about the mix-up, but anyway, people, when it comes out, will
look forward to it.
It's not your fault.
I just want to send you a Christmas card this year, that song.
Now, this is your Scottish, is that right?
Absolutely.
So you have...
Now, that's the way you talk, isn't it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
We speak English.
You guys sort of changed the accent a bit when you learned it.
It's a beautiful...
Is that a brogue?
Is that what the people call that?
It sounds very nice.
Very...
Yeah, you sound nice, too.
Thank you very much.
You did you talk about...
Indiana, originally.
Indiana?
Is that here in America?
It's here in America.
Oh.
I was raised by wolves.
I met a few wolves, too, but the wolves I met didn't come from Indiana.
Anyway, that's...
That's a beautiful...
You have a very beautiful whatever, you know.
Yeah, thank you.
Thank you.
What is...
Now, the name Sheena, is that also a Scottish name?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's...
It's Gaelic, actually.
It's Gaelic for Jean or Jane.
Really?
So it is a common name in Scotland?
I'm not common.
My name isn't common either.
Did you hear this?
No, I think what you meant to say is it's not a name that is unusual.
Well, what I meant was it's unusual in the United States for someone to be
named Sheena.
Yeah.
But in Scotland, it's not that exotic a name.
No, no, no, no.
Yeah.
It's okay.
It's reasonably tame.
Yeah.
And how did you begin your career?
I was lucky, like most of us that started in this business.
I left college and...
What were you studying in college?
Drama.
Yeah.
How far along into it did you get before you left?
Oh, I qualified.
Yeah.
You graduated?
I got my degree and...
What college?
The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
That's very impressive.
Very impressive.
Have you heard of it?
Sure, I've heard of it.
Well, anyway, I was at college.
While I was at college...
I went to Ball State.
What?
You went to where?
I...
I think we played you one year.
I'm not sure, but, uh...
Did you really go there?
Or is it just a good life?
No, I went to Ball State University.
Its name, it was endowed by the Ball Brothers.
The Ball family.
Yeah?
Wow, you must have had some fun at your dances there.
Yeah, I'm sorry.
Just think of the advertising you could do with a name like that.
Yeah, I know.
Yeah.
There's an endless string of jokes about it.
Now, okay, okay.
So you graduated and then you wanted to go into show business.
You were already, you had a degree in drama.
Yeah, well, I was sort of singing with the band while I was at college.
And anyway, I did a documentary show for the BBC.
And that was like a 50-minute film about the making of my first single
and the launching of a singer.
You sit really far back, so you had to sort of turn around and talk to them.
Oh, no, you're all right.
That's fair.
You're all right.
But so the actual, the beginning of your career was part of a show.
Yeah, absolutely.
Was this a competition?
How were you selected for the show?
Well, I had to audition for it.
It was like, it's a strange thing.
They wanted to show a true-to-life documentary about the launching of a new
singer.
Is this a regular feature on the BBC?
No, no, no.
Or one-time deal?
This was a one-time deal.
So in order to do that, they had to go out and find someone who was just about
to break on the scene.
Right.
But they sort of helped along because they set up an audition with EMI Records
for me.
And then they filmed it, and I generally went along and took a lot of abuse
along the way and stuff like that.
Well, this seems like the pressure would be really magnified here.
Yeah, but you know, it was a big break.
I would have gone through anything to get it.
Really?
And I had people sort of telling me that on screen, on camera, you'll never
make it.
You had people critiquing your work?
Oh, absolutely.
Like who?
Well, you know the singer Lulu, who had a few hits here a few years ago?
What was the...
Yeah.
To serve with love.
I think she had a number one with that.
Well, she's a very talented lady.
She's very big in Britain.
Well, anyway, she didn't think much of me at all.
Neither did her manager.
He said I was too plain, and I was too ordinary, and I would never make it.
No kidding.
Yeah.
So maybe they'll be true in the future, but...
Did that hurt your feelings at the time, and really kind of make you want to go
back to where...
No, no.
It sort of hurt my feelings, but...
I mean, I was...
I'd already been singing for two or three years in the clubs, and I mean, I'd
heard you standing
there in Glasgow clubs singing, and you get people from the back shouting,
Get off, you rubbish!
And, you know, people really threw your bus fares onto the stage, and, you know,
offered
to write your checks just to stop.
No kidding.
Write checks?
Yeah.
I mean...
Well, that's not a bad deal.
I've had strange offers.
These guys, they must have had some of the same experience.
These guys, you know, really weird.
Yeah, I don't know.
Yeah, even recently, guys.
No, no, no.
I've had offers like that recently.
Where do you call home now?
Still at Glasgow?
No, I live in Los Angeles now.
You do?
I still...
Yeah, I've made my home here in the States.
Do you miss Scotland at all?
Yeah, I do.
What do you miss about it?
I miss my family, who are now basically in England, but from Scotland, I miss
the food.
What kind of food?
They don't have...
Is it like Scottish eggs?
Is that...
Did I say...
I mean, is that it?
Scottish egg?
Well...
What is a Scottish egg?
A Scotch egg.
Scotch egg.
I'm sorry.
Scotch egg.
It's a boiled egg with sausage meat and breadcrumbs.
I bet you miss those.
Oh, absolutely.
Actually, the sausages in Scotland are great.
Are they pretty good?
And I miss baked beans on toast.
Oh, it's great.
You should try that.
It's supper.
It is the best supper.
Baked beans on toast with steak sauce on it.
Try it.
I'm telling you, it's great.
Now, but is that a Scottish dish or something you just made up at home?
Is there really something they eat in Scotland?
Well, it's not like, you know, traditional.
You won't read about it in books of ancient poetry.
It's more like a snack.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But you could have that in the United States.
You could make yourself still now, even in Los Angeles.
They have beans, they have toast.
But British baked beans are different from American baked beans.
And same with the steak sauce, it's different.
Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Sheena.
Aren't you?
And good luck with your new album, which, of course, we don't have a copy of.
Yeah.
Anyway, it's called A Private Heaven.
I hope it's very successful for you.
I'm sure it will be.
Thank you.
Nice meeting you.
We'll be back here with Marv Albert, ladies and gentlemen.
Okay, it's Thursday night.
Boy, you know, it's tough to do a show every night, isn't it?
Are you noticing that?
Oh, yeah.
But, you know, and I know we don't have time for them right here, but we
occasionally, people
who come on as guests on the show, through no fault of anybody in particular,
occasionally
a guest after his or her appearance will file a couple of complaints.
They complain after they do the show.
Yeah, after they do the show.
And which, to my mind, indicates that they haven't seen the show.
So we have a few here recently filed.
Maybe we'll get to those later tonight.
You mean a guest did the show recently?
Yeah, a guest was recently on our show.
And complaints came back from her people?
We have a couple.
Just, there's seven here.
Seven.
I'll just start with one.
Now, and again, this was my fault.
Held up the wrong album.
Let's see, that's my fault.
You did that.
I did that.
I made a mistake.
There's some others there.
That is it.
Number five, the fruit arrived 15 minutes late.
But we'll, no, we'll.
No, that would be, I could see where that would be upsetting.
That would, yeah, you might do, you know.
You're coming on to plug an album, which, you know, a different album is
plugged.
And then you need a, you know, a piece of hair.
You never know when you're going to be.
You need a piece of apple or something.
Yeah.
And it's like 15 minutes.
And it's late.
Before you get it.
You could be cut down by scurvy in that 15-minute time period.
All right, I'll read you one more, and then we'll stop and get on with the show.
One more.
Plastic cups instead of glasses.
Ladies and gentlemen, what kind of animals are we?
Just one more.
No, I'm going to save, I'm going to save number seven.
Oh, we'll come back to that.
I'll come back to it.
What's number 15?
There's only seven complaints there.
Okay, it's viewer mail night, ladies and gentlemen.
This is the night we answer our viewer mail.
These are actual letters from actual viewers.
Let's get right to it, shall we?
Gee, I hope the fruit was on time tonight.
Thank you very much.
All right, I'm going to tell you number seven and get it out of the way, and
then we'll go on to the show.
This is the list of complaints.
Are you ready, Paul?
Yes.
Number seven, the big item on the list, person recently on our show.
And again, we don't know if these complaints were filed by this person or on
behalf of her, by her...
By her people, I would say.
By her people, yeah.
They would be fine.
Okay, here is complaint number seven.
Her limousine wasn't big enough.
Oh!
It is time!
No, no, no, no.
She wasn't.
Try explaining this to people in Calcutta.
The limousine wasn't big enough.
Somebody is coming on to do a show, expecting a stretch limo, you know, and a
sedan arrives.
I would, you know, I can understand that.
It's inhumane, isn't it?
That I can understand.
All right.
Pretty new!
Thank you very much.
Hey, hey, you get yourself a little something.
Yeah, you get yourself a little something.
Oh, this is fabulous.
Look at that.
Better late than never.
GM.
I didn't think they wrapped Wax Fruit.
That's fabulous.
Have you seen Nadia?
You know what it is?
I don't know anything.
Oh, it's a TV movie, isn't it?
They showed it on the...
It's the story of Nadia Comaneci.
Hi, everyone.
Yippee?
Yeah, thank you.
I can hardly wait to talk to Robin Leach tonight, because I had a caviar
nightmare last night.
What happened?
I want to talk to him about, you know, he said...
Oh, yeah, the champagne dreams.
Champagne...
Yeah, I want to find out just exactly how much money this guy is worth.
Yeah.
That Robin Leach.
Paul, ask me why I might be going to see the new production of Man of La Mancha
with Raul
Julia and Sheena Easton.
All right, all right.
Why might you go to see the production of Man of La Mancha with Raul Julia and
Sheena Easton?
Well, Raul Julia is fantastic, and Sheena Easton is a babe.
Is it?
Have you seen that commercial?
No.
It's people coming out of this production here, the big Broadway play, Man of
La Mancha.
Raul Julia and Sheena Easton.
And then they say all of these wonderful things about Raul Julia's acting.
And then, and I don't mean to say that this is the only thing they say about
Sheena Easton,
because there are many other nice things they say about her in the role there
as, who does
she play in Man of La Mancha?
She plays the women of La Mancha.
Yeah, she's, she's the man of La Mancha, right.
And, and so when people say things about Sheena Easton, it always is, oh yeah,
she's quite
a babe.
Oh, pardon me.
It's the coleslaw from up to the commissary, but I had to wrestle this away
from an audience
member.
A guy hands this to me.
He turns himself in.
If I hadn't gotten this from the guy, I would have heard that all night.
Like it's the soup bowl.
It was the coleslaw.
Thank you.
Nice.
Nice.
Nice.
Nice.
It was really funny.
Cried a lot.
It made me feel really romantic.
Raul was magnificent.
She's very sexy.
But Sheena Easton was wonderful.
Sheena Easton is a babe.
I cried, I laughed, I applauded.
It was wonderful.
It's a great show.
Amen.
See Raul Julia and Sheena Easton in the impossible dream musical, Man of La Mancha.
You'll remember it for the rest of your life.
