Welcome back to the show, and quite a show it is this evening, ladies and
gentlemen.
My first guest, this is actually not our first guest, but, well, maybe it is.
Is it? We've had several folks out here already, but another guest.
Let's just, another guest is here tonight.
He is the leader of a band that consistently places records high on all music
charts in this country and all around the world.
We're delighted to have him with us tonight.
Welcome, please, Charlie Daniels.
Thank you very much for being here.
I'm a big fan of your music, and I know you're very busy.
You're traveling a lot, of course, and you have your hat on.
I do.
Yeah, and you always have your hat on, don't you?
Yeah, well, I tell you, airlines lost my clothes on the way in today, and I
lost my contact lenses, and here I am, kind of scroungy.
Oh, you look fine.
Well, thank you.
Where did they lose the stuff? Any ideas?
No, they don't even know.
Yeah.
You know, there's a girl in our audience that had her purse stolen at a shoe
store, so this kind of thing goes on.
It's awful.
Yeah.
And I noticed that you're also chewing gum.
Yeah.
Now, that's all right. You can chew gum.
I appreciate it.
Do you chew gum wherever you go also?
Well, yeah, I chew a lot of gum. I tell you, when I sing, to keep my mouth and
throat moist, I chew gum.
And you also use snuff, right?
Would you like some?
Well, I've never tried snuff.
You want to try it?
Well, what exactly is it?
It's snuff.
But what do they put in?
Oh, it's ground tobacco, is basically what it is.
I'm about out, but I'll give you a dip anyway.
Well, this looks like bait, Charlie.
This looks like...
Catfish bait.
Now, what exactly do you do with that? Why don't you go ahead and load up, and
then I'll follow.
Well, okay.
Paul, you went in on this?
Uh, that's all right. We have our honor.
Okay.
Let's get you a pinch like that.
Now, that was a sizable pinch.
Well, that's not. That's a pretty small pinch for me.
Really?
Yeah, I wouldn't take any more than that if I was you.
Now, how...
Now, then what happens?
Well, you expectorate.
That means you spit it, don't you?
You spit it, right.
Well, let me see you spit something.
Well, what am I going to spit it in?
Well, I don't know, Charlie. You brought the snuff.
I was hoping...
Well, we don't have anything to, uh...
Maybe I'll, uh, just put it in here?
Yeah, just right down in.
There you go.
Mm, like this.
Whoa, you're not messing around, are you?
So you just put it in?
Just put it in.
Oh, yeah.
Don't...
Whatever you do, don't swallow.
No, I see how that works.
No, you...
Of course you spit it out.
That's the only thing you would do.
You get that...
Boy, oh, boy, Charlie.
Mm.
Mm.
Is that...
It burns a little, doesn't it?
Yeah, well, see, after it burns...
After it burns the nerve endings off, you know, it's...
It's comforting.
Yeah, it's comforting.
Yeah.
Um, what part of, um, the...
The South are you from?
Well, I'm originally from North Carolina, but I've been living in Tennessee now
for about
the last 15 years.
And the, uh...
I guess the first record I was aware of you doing was the one about, uh, the
Uneasy Rider.
Uneasy Rider.
Yeah.
Now, that was a story about a guy traveling cross country who got into some
trouble.
Is that autobiographical?
Well, back in the 60s when people first started wearing their hair long and
this guy got into
a bar in Mississippi, had a flat tire outside the bar and went in and how he
got into it
and out of it, yeah.
Was that anything like what you experienced in life?
No.
Never?
Never had any difficulty there, huh?
Uh, no, not really.
I, uh, this was back during the time that, uh, the, uh, the Easy Rider movie
was out.
Mm-hmm.
I just had an idea for this song and named it Uneasy Rider.
Yeah.
Because that seemed to be in vogue at the time, you know.
Uh, you, you worked in a lot of bars, a lot of smoky dumps, a lot of places
like this,
didn't you?
And, uh, and then you, you, uh, you're, I guess still are, but you wouldn't
probably be able
to do it time-wise, a really well-respected, highly sought-after studio
musician.
Well, not really.
Yeah.
Uh, I was kidding.
Oh.
I played a...
It was your idea, man.
Uh, I played a lot of sessions, but I, I, I really was not, uh, I was in
Nashville, and
I'm not really, uh, a real Nashville-type musician.
I didn't play the same kind of music, in other words, that they played in
Nashville.
Well, you worked, uh, with...
But I did work quite a few sessions with certain people.
You worked with Bob Dylan?
I worked with Bob Dylan on three albums.
Uh-huh.
Nashville Skyline, Self-Portrait, and New Morning.
Uh-huh.
And, uh, worked with Rango Starr on an album.
Uh, Bukusa Blues, I think was the name of the album.
It was kind of a country sort of album that he did.
Did, what was the...
working with Bob Dylan like?
Was that fun, or...
Yeah, it was some of the freest, about as free as you could get in the studio,
because
he wanted you to do, you know, what you wanted to do, as opposed to somebody
telling you exactly
what to do.
Uh-huh.
Uh, he wouldn't want you to put your own self into it, your own style of
playing and
all into it.
Yeah.
Did he snuff occasionally, or...
No, Bob, I never seen Bob do any, do any snuff.
He chewed a little gum once in a while.
I'm sure this is gonna catch on.
I hope so.
Um, we're gonna pause here.
We'll be right back with Mr. Daniels after you watch this.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Welcome back to the show.
Uh, novelist, uh, Louis L'Amour is here.
Also, of course, Mr. Charlie Daniels is here.
And you're friends with Mr. L'Amour.
That's right.
He's one of my favorite people in the whole world.
And, uh, you guys hang around together, or do you visit?
Uh, we, yeah, we visit.
Well, see, he lives way out in California, and I live in Tennessee, and when
our paths
cross, yes, we do, we do visit.
Did you, you dedicated an album to this band, didn't you?
Before you had met him, actually, right?
Mm-hmm, yeah.
He's, uh, I've read so many of his books.
He's, I don't have many, I'm sure he can, I don't know if he can even tell you
how many
he's got out of that, because he's got a lot of, somewhere in the 80s, I think,
now.
And I must have read, well, the biggest part of him.
Uh, it's interesting.
He's an amazing storyteller, and a lot of your music is elaborately well-told
songs, or stories
in song.
Uh, is, is there anything in your background that, uh, dictates that, or how
does that?
I think, basically, I come from a real rural part of North Carolina, and, uh, I
never saw
a television set with a picture on it when I was about 15 years old.
And people, you know, before television, I mean, I'm not knocking television,
it's a
good medium, but people used to talk a lot more, and entertainment was a lot
more slanted
toward talking and telling stories, and I've always admired a good storyteller.
Uh, a lot of the older people, uh, I used to sit and listen to my grandfather
and, uh,
the older generation tell stories back in the early 1900s when things were, you
know, pretty
rough and pretty rural.
And I think I just got to it really admiring that, and when I started writing
music, I just
kind of carried over into it.
Uh, tell me about, is this a yearly event, the, the volunteer jam?
Yeah, it is.
And you started this by your...
Well, it started kind of as, uh, almost as an accident.
We, we're doing an album, uh, we want to do two live cuts on, and the band not
having
much stature at the time, we figured we could draw a crowd in our hometown.
So, we, uh, scheduled it as a live recording session, we called it Volunteer
Jam after the
Volunteer State of Tennessee.
And, uh, the first year we had so much fun, and the people had so much fun, we
decided
to make a yearly event out of it.
So, we've, uh, had eight now.
We'll have our ninth one in January.
And how many folks show up for this thing?
Uh, as many as the building will hold.
They've all been sold out.
Uh, the, about the most people we can handle in Nashville in the building is
about 10,000.
And people get, uh, is this a day-long deal, all night?
No, no.
It starts, it's about an eight-hour show, basically.
It starts usually around 7 or 7.30 or 6.30, something like that, and goes till
about
two in the morning, ordinarily.
Yeah.
A good time was had by all.
I guarantee you, it's nothing like it.
Uh, you, uh, you, now, is this your own guitar?
I'm guessing you didn't lose that with your club?
No, I didn't lose that.
Okay.
And, uh, you are going to play something.
I sure am.
All right.
Terrific.
Anything we need to say about this, or is it all pretty much self-explanatory?
I, this, I was going to do another song, and I decided that since Louie Lamore
was on
the show, he hadn't heard this one.
And it might be the only chance tonight I get to do it for him.
It's about one of his favorite states called Wyoming, which I just came from.
And, uh, this is in tribute to the folks of Wyoming.
It's called Wyoming on my mind.
Should I go now, or?
Take it away.
You want another dip while I'm doing this?
No.
Yeah, well, load me up again.
Okay.
Lately I have took the time to turn toward yesterday.
And take a look.
Memory's so clear.
It's like they're written in the pages of a book.
Like a heaven-reaching mountain with a snow cap and a silhouette of pine.
And a little cabin where the river bends.
I can hear the distant sounds of prairie winds.
And I guess it's just a moment.
Because I think I've got Wyoming on my mind.
In a field of virgin snow, the only tracks you saw were the ones you left
yourself.
And when the winter winds would blow, I can recall almost exactly how it felt.
Like your sins had been forgiven and your soul was mingling with the rocks and
pines.
And I've just got to be there in the fall.
And I've just got to be there in the fall.
I keep thinking about the daddy of them all.
And I guess I'm all through roaming, because I think I've got Wyoming on my
mind.
guitar solo
In October morning I recall the biggest thrill I've ever known
Riding across the frosty fields
To push a herd of white-faced cattle home
Then the purple twilight shadows fall
And the lights come twinkling on
It's supper time
It's the closest place to heaven that I've been
And I think it's time that I went back again
And I guess I'm all through roaming
Cause I think I got wild men on my mind
And I guess I'm all through roaming
Cause I think I got wild men on my mind
We'll be right back after this, folks
Thank you, Tom, very nice
And I guess I got wild men on my mind
I guess I got wild men on my mind
I guess I got wild men on my mind
And I guess I got wild men on my mind
And I guess I got wild men on my mind
And I guess I got wild men on my mind
And I guess I got wild men on my mind
