As only a senior in high school, our next guest defeated 28 competitors to
become the
1995 national grocery bagging champion. From Rouse's supermarket in Louisiana,
here's Brad
Boudreaux. Brad? Hi, Brad. How are you? Pleasure to have you here. Welcome to
the program, Brad
Boudreaux. Brad, this is, obviously, that's the trophy you get for winning the
competition.
Yeah. Is this your first time in the competition? Yes. I've been working for
about a year, and
I heard about it, and I haven't been in a while. And now you're the king. The
king. You're
the man. Top dog. That's right. They don't give this out to lightweights, buddy.
No, sir.
Sure, no. Who do you work for? What's the name of the store? Rouse's
supermarket. I understand
that you have kind of a business deal with the owner of the supermarket. Every
time you mention
the name of the store. I get $100 bill. Wow. Pretty good deal. Now, what else
did you win
besides this lovely trophy here? I won $2,000 cash. Yeah. And I won the trophy.
Well, and
what are you going to do with the dough? Get a car to go to college. Yeah,
where are you
going to go to school? A local college to where I live, Thibodeau. And what
will you be studying
there? Probably general business. Good for you. And then maybe one day you'll
own your own
market, just like the one you work for, which is... Rouse's.
That's nice.
Every time you mention the name of the market, I think I'm hearing a dog sneeze.
Is that what that was? Let's try it again. What's the name of the market?
Rouse's.
There was a dog sneezing somewhere. All right. So now, what is the competition?
You go to
Las Vegas and you're competing against 28 other competitors. And what is the
competition like?
Just a lot of nerve wracking, waiting, going against 28 other people. Is it
kind of like
a round robin deal? Is it all head to head, everybody go at once? Or are there
different
classes, different categories? There's like different heats and like five at a
time. And
they narrow it down by score. At the end of the day, you're exhausted, you're
beat,
you're dead? Yeah. You want to go to bed. What's the most important thing about
packing
up a load of groceries? Well, basically, just put your cans on the bottom and
your eggs and
night bulbs on top. That's right. Never put the bread on the bottom, never put
the eggs
on the bottom because people will complain you're ruining their groceries. You
know what I learned
years ago? I used to do this for a living, by the way. A lot of people think
that it's... No,
no, no, no. You pack groceries with your head right here. You bag with your
head. And I'll bet
you... That's the first thing you learned when you signed on there. What's the
market?
Rouse's.
Mention the name of the market and a dog sneezes. Are you ready to go? You and
I are going to
go head to head here. Is that right? That's right. All right. Now, in the
competition,
it's not only speed, it's neatness, it's balance. Placement. Placement. All
right. But
tonight, pretty much pure raw speed. All right. All right. Biff, come on out
here. Biff will
serve us. Oh, my God. He's got a gun. Look. It's a holdup. He's got a gun. Oh,
my God.
Get behind the checkout counter. It's a holdup. It's just a little drill, you
know, like something
like that. Okay. Here we go. Let me, uh... Now, can we get our bags out and
ready to go?
Of course. All right. Here we go. I'm going to open up two at once. Can we pre-open
our
bags? How are we doing on time? Do we have enough time for this? Okay. We'll
try and get
this in. Here. You ready? Wish I could get me a job at Rouse's. No, it's Rouse's.
Ah! Cute! All right. Here we go. On your marks, gentlemen. Yeah. Watch your
ears. Watch it. He's not
kidding. Set. Oh. Yeah. Well, wasn't that something?
Clean up, Ali. Clean up, Ali. Yes, sir.
Oh, now, wait a minute. Now, wait a minute. This doesn't look like a master
packing job
over... Exactly as... Ah, have you had fun while you're in New York City? Oh,
yeah.
When are you going to go back? Tonight. Oh, good. Good for you. Hey, have you
ever been
to Denver? Uh, no, I haven't. Oh, man. Let's see. Are they taking off out there?
Oh, look
at this. There we go. Congratulations, Brad. Thank you very much. Thank you.
Nice to have
you here. Brad Boudreau, ladies and gentlemen. The 1975, 95 Sagger of the Year.
Nice job. Thank
