"It's Raining Men" Collection on Letterman, 1982-2015

"It's Reigning Men"
The Last Two Years
Thank you, Paul. Thank you.
You have a hit song, don't you, Paul?
Oh, it's just a little thing I'm kind of proud of,
the number one dance record.
They don't know about it.
Just the number one dance record in the country,
according to Billboard magazine today.
A little thing called
"It's Reigning Men."
"It's Reigning Men," yes.
You may have heard it.
A certain segment of the population
finds it very entertaining.
That's all I'm gonna say about it.
A little something for the holidays from Paul.
It's called "It's Reigning Men."
Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentlemen.
Later, or no, tomorrow,
actress, comedian Madeline Kahn will be here,
author of Zany Afternoons, Bruce McCall,
and comedian Jerry Seinfeld.
Paul, oh, Paul, we should do this from now on.
This will just be it.
Hello, David.
You, me, and the band.
This will be it for us.
I see.
Now, last night we mentioned your number one hit.
Yeah, I got so excited, you know,
about the thought of it.
It's a nighty little thing that happens, you know,
a guy calls you up in an afternoon and says,
"Hey, come over and help me with a song."
It was Paul Jabara, actually.
You may remember him from "Last Dance"
and a couple of other smashes.
Anyway, he said, "You know, I got a title.
The Graining Men, what do you think?"
I said, "It sounds good."
Two years later, he made a record.
It's the Weather Girls.
They sing it.
They're a marvelous kind of a new happening dance rock act.
And, you know, it's a number one dance record this week in Billboard.
And it's really, I want to thank all the, really the little people.
You know, thanks for asking.
But Paul Jabara is really a marvelous kind of a cat
and he figured that this was an appealing kind of a concept, you know.
So it's just a matter of time before you start buying property in the Bahamas
then, I guess.
Well, I mentioned my new house, I think.
Is that something coming up?
That's right.
I'm not sure I'm confused at this point.
Well, congratulations to you, sir.
Oh, thanks.
It's no big deal.
It's raining men.
Let me just say, a certain segment of the audience finds it very entertaining.
That's all I wanted.
Yeah, I know.
Now, did the Osmonds plan to do a cover on this?
Oh.
Well, anyway, we're very pleased.
Very pleased for your success.
It's the number one thing.
It's number one.
It's a big deal, yeah.
A little number one thing.
Okay, let's get on with the show.
Welcome back to the program.
We have quite a show for you here.
Almost too good for American TV, but we're going on anyway.
And a little surprise.
I have something I want to show you right here in the RCA facility.
So if everything goes well, we'll get a look at that.
The last couple of weeks, I've been talking to our own Mr. Paul Schaefer
about a song that Mr. Schaefer wrote entitled "It's Raining Men".
Now, the song has been on Billboard's dance disco chart for 14 weeks
and was ranked number one in their end-of-the-year issue.
And we're all very pleased for Paul.
That's very nice, Paul.
Come on over here, Paul, if you will.
Mr. Paul Schaefer, ladies and gentlemen.
I'm so excited about this nutty song.
The Weather Girls.
Can I tell them?
Tell them the origin of the song.
Can I tell you what happened?
Well, a guy, a friend of mine, his name is Paul Jabara.
Everybody knows him.
He wrote a little thing called "Last Dance"
that Donna Summer had a little bit of success with.
He wrote a few other nutty songs.
He called me up and he said, "I got a great title.
Would you come over and help me with 'It's Raining Men'.
I didn't deny it."
Yeah.
It was a good title.
And I wrote it with him in about an afternoon.
And he took it, ran with it.
He got these two chicks to sing it.
They call themselves the Weather Girls.
They're fabulous.
They're here with us tonight.
And, you know, it's a thing that kind of caught on.
Now this is not, it's sort of confusing
because there's two songs going on.
There's a, we have to delineate, there's a fictional song that we,
a fictional record, Bermuda, that we do here.
Oh, that's right.
No, no, this is...
This is an actual record that's really on all the charts.
It just came on at number 80 this week on the pop chart in Billboard.
Yeah.
Now is, I'm curious about a couple of things.
Making you a lot of dough, this song?
Well, my people haven't exactly received any checks yet,
but I'm sure that, I'm sure you get paid in this thing,
in the dance, in the club scene.
I know that you actually get the money.
Who exactly are your people, Paul?
When you say my people, who does that include?
Well, I have my, you know, on the coast where I get my hair cut.
There's one of my, there's my west coast people, and you know, you know...
You go to the coast to have your hair cut.
And I have my east coast people.
No, not really, I don't know.
Now, can you tell, now originally the,
I don't mean to cast Aspergians on the Weather Girls,
but were they the first choice in artists for the song?
I'm told, Paul Jabbar told me that he took it to every girl singer in the
business.
Uh-huh.
And the Weather Girls were the girls who, he felt, were the best.
The best for the song?
To interpret this particular song.
The best blend of material and artist.
And I think we're going to see some material later on.
When they come out.
Okay, now...
These girls are, you know, they're exciting.
Now, and they're going to work with our band tonight.
We're going to take a crack at playing it.
You know, a very complicated studio technology goes into making these dance
records.
We've got four guys, we're going to do our best, we're going to cut them out.
You're going to do it right here for the folks live in the studio.
And the Weather Girls are really here.
The Weather Girls will be here.
I met them for the first time today.
I had never, although I did co-write the song with Paul Jabbar.
You've never met them before?
I hadn't met them before today, and I've got to say, they really did knock me
out.
They're fabulous girls.
All right, all right, so this will be exciting.
This will be the American television debut for this song, I guess.
You know it, and I'm excited about it.
Bermuda, of course, we have debuted already.
That went through the roof.
That's the fictional song.
This is the real song.
It's really out.
We're going to debut it now.
I've got to go.
I've got to go.
All right, Paul is going to go over here with, of course,
Hiram Bullock, Will Lee, and Steve Jordan.
And it's an exciting night.
You might want to wake the kids and throw a couple of rocks through your
neighbor's window
because in a matter of moments, ladies and gentlemen, we're going to present to
you Paul Schaefer
and the band.
Are we close, guys?
Yes.
You all set?
Ladies and gentlemen, and now it's reigning men, Paul Schaefer and the Weather
Girls.
Hi.
Hi.
We're your weather girls.
Uh-huh.
And have we got news for you.
You better listen.
Get ready or you lonely girls.
Come on, girls.
And me.
You better listen.

Yes.
How is it that you never really met Paul before tonight?
Because we've always worked with Paul Jabbar.
He's the one that called us and said that he had a song for us.
And we came over to his house.
We thought he was nuts.
Thought he was nuts.
And we learned the lyrics and then we went to the studio and did it in about
two and a half hours.
And we didn't know the song was going to really do what it did.
Now, before you became the Weather Girls, is this true you also had an act or
were known as Two Tons of Fun?
Yes.
We're still known as Two Tons of Fun.
Two Tons of Fun.
And what kind of act would that be?
I mean, when you say we're going to go see Two Tons of Fun, what do people see
when they get there?
Well, first of all, they he
