Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentlemen.
During the course of his distinguished career,
my next guest has accidentally swallowed a radio,
written a Broadway play for Harold Hecubar,
and almost started a tribal war
by refusing to marry a cannibal's daughter.
He lived for several years with a noted professor,
a movie star, a millionaire, and his wife, and all the rest.
Would you please welcome the star of Gilligan's Island,
Dobie Gillis, and a new show for NBC entitled Scamps,
Mr. Bob Denville.
My, oh my, what a lovely...
Do you, as we were...
As we were reading off this list of achievements on the show,
do you get, are you confronted on the street by people saying,
do you remember the time, this, you swallowed the radio, that, whatever,
whatever?
I tell you, kids come up to me and they say,
remember that episode where you did the da-da-da-da-da-da?
I have no idea, and I say, uh-huh, right.
Just play along, huh?
How many...
I'm sorry.
Following the dogs, I figure only nine children and myself could really cap
that, right?
Now, this is a photograph from, I'm guessing, your new television program, is
that right?
It's right here, right there.
Okay, and we'll talk a bit more about these a little bit later,
and also Gilligan's Island, and the many loves of Dobie Gillis,
and the show with Herb Edelman.
The Good Guys?
Yeah.
All of that and more with Mr. Bob Denville.
We'll be right back.
Thank you.
Paul Schaefer, ladies and gentlemen.
Mr. Bob Denver is here, of course,
and we're talking about Gilligan's Island when you walked out.
A thunderous ovation.
Does that make you feel great?
No, 16 years of reruns, I mean, how can you lose?
I have to see it once or twice.
When the show was originally on, was it a big hit?
Yeah, we went top one, and we were number one for one year,
and we were canceled for a funny reason,
which I won't go into network thinking again.
No, what was the network thinking?
No, come on.
No, no, no, no, no.
Hey, there's that thunderous ovation again.
Yeah.
No, it's just a scheduling problem again, as usual, you know, with the network,
and we didn't do a final show.
We never got rescued.
So all the kids kept watching the shows,
and they'd go to the dentist and come back and miss one,
and that's the one they thought we got rescued on.
So finally, about four years ago, we did a rescue show,
a rescue from Gilligan's Island, for all the mothers who said,
fine, well, you just put one on so I can tell my kids that you finally got off
the island.
At the times I would watch it, it was very frustrating,
because it seemed like other people could come to the island.
Yes.
But you guys were screwed.
You never...
It's true.
We really had a hard time staying on the island,
writing plots that would keep us there.
Was that a fun show to do?
It really was.
Every week we had a big special effect.
You know, we had rockets, we had mountains, you know, volcanoes, caves.
It was always fun to do it.
Each week was different, you know.
Are there times now when you wish you were not the man who was on Gilligan's
Island?
No, not at all.
No, I had a good time doing it.
I just didn't think of the rerun for 16 years.
Yeah.
I made a better deal.
Now, does that represent a lot of money for you,
the fact that this thing is going to run in perpetuity?
No, I got paid off in two years, by 1968, and that was it.
Yeah.
And then it just keeps going, oh.
This crowd has certainly taken you to its heart.
I tell you, boy, I really love them.
And you can't tell us why it was taken off.
It was doing well.
Yeah, it was doing very well.
And we were picked up.
They told us we were picked up for the fourth year.
And then all of a sudden it just went off the schedule.
And that was the end of it.
And what did you do?
You made a couple other shows in between, which did not have the success.
No, I did another one after called The Good Guys,
with Herb Elliman and Joyce Van Patten,
which was on for two years, but nobody saw it.
It was one of those.
People that saw it, I think, one out of a thousand, they liked it.
Yeah.
And then afterwards I just kind of went on the road the last ten years.
Doing what on the road?
I do a lot of dinner theater with my wife.
And we do like Owl and the Pussycat.
We have a trunk with all our wardrobe and a tape with all the sounds and the
props.
And what we need is a stage.
So at a moment's notice, you and your wife can put on a play?
Yeah.
Do it!
She's backstage dying, you realize that, don't you?
Well, how long does the play run, Bob?
Well, let's see.
It's about two hours and a half.
Well, this is...
And you just travel from town to town?
Mm-hmm.
This is a throwback to an earlier era, isn't it?
Yeah, and it's very good.
It's a really good experience.
About 15% of the people in the country have seen a live three-act show.
And so a lot of the audiences are brand new.
And they say,
Boy, that's something else.
I could reach out and touch you.
You're right there.
You know?
I'm going to go see these things again.
What's it called?
I say, a play.
I say, that's it.
Play.
It's interesting.
A lot of people strive all their life in television or movies to get one
successful character on.
And you've done it twice.
You were probably equally recognizable from The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
Work.
Yeah.
Is that show on in reruns anywhere?
No, I don't think so.
I hear about it once in a while.
They have Nostalgia Days, and the network puts on an episode.
But so far, they kept it off.
Yeah.
And do people still respond to that character, though?
In New York, it's Maynard.
Maynard.
Hey, Maynard, how you doing?
It's the only place in the country where it's Maynard.
And there's a lot of fans in their 30s that, you know, really liked it.
And they grew up with me.
And now, with 16 years of reruns, I've got a whole other generation of kids.
And Mr. Krebs was a beatnik.
Right.
No hippies.
Yeah.
What was the definition of the day of a beatnik?
Well, the definition of Maynard was he wouldn't have come out of his room
unless Dobie was his friend.
He would have stayed listening to jazz, you know, and just never talked to
anybody.
So, and then the third and fourth year, we went to fantasy.
I was blasted off to the moon with a chimp.
Then I drank a potion and turned into Mr. Hyde.
I could lift the whole grocery store.
I love that kind of comedy, fantasy.
It's kind of really nice.
There's no limitations.
This close association with two modern television characters, has that ever
been a problem for you?
You mentioned earlier, do you ever wish you weren't Gilligan's Island?
But you, I mean, you're so strongly connected now.
Yeah.
It's going to be whatever, however this new show does, it's going to be, well,
there's Gilligan.
He's got himself a regular job now.
Or Maynard.
No, actually, I couldn't play any of those characters for the character in this
show, in Scamps, because I got nine Gilligan's and Maynard's in there.
Nine kids, you know, and they're all falling down and making messes and getting
in trouble like, you know, Gilligan and Maynard did.
And even my wife does a pratfall.
I kind of stay very clean and pristine.
It's very nice.
So your wife is in this program also?
Yeah, she plays the mail person who delivers, you know, Dina, my wife's name is
Dina, and she plays the mail person who brings the mail to me on my rejections.
Was there, going back to Gilligan's Island, did people, did you guys get along
all right?
Was there ever infighting or fistfights or?
No.
It was such a, you know, hard show to do.
It was so many, you know, words and so much, you know, physical action.
I did it through all the, you know, physical gags, falling down, you know, and
running into trees and coconuts landing on your head.
And I did it for that reason, to do the physical comedy.
Yeah.
And I think that's why it's rerunning.
It's just got those, you know, jokes that are very old and very clear.
And, no, we had just a great time.
Alan Hale and Jim Backus know every joke in the world, and for three years I
heard him.
Yeah.
Alan Hale and Jim Backus, the whole.
What did you do before The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis?
Well, I graduated from college, and then I, big deal, and then I taught school
for a couple of years, grammar school.
I worked at the post office, all the odd jobs, and I screen tested for the part
of Maynard.
And they decided to go with me, and I got the pilot and then the series.
Yeah.
And it ran for four years, so kind of just luck, right place, right time.
Yeah.
And the new series now that you showed the photographs earlier is called Scamps,
and this is about what here now?
This is about a writer who's old.
You're not lost anywhere in this one.
No, no.
I'm kind of in, like, a suburban neighborhood with a lot of tract homes.
I have, like, a two-bedroom home with a backyard.
And a mother comes by and asks me, could I take care of, you know, a child from
three to six after school?
And I say, sure.
I end up with nine.
Nine.
Two fives, four six-year-olds, and a seven, eight, and a nine.
And a dog, my own dog.
I figure go for it, if you're going to go for it.
You know?
And it's about, you know, me taking care of the kids and the trouble they get
into and the things that little children get into.
Yeah.
Looks like a lot of fun for you.
Oh, really?
They gave the kids each a bucket of paint and a brush and told them to paint
the back fence.
Get out of the way.
Yeah.
And the paint went everywhere.
So this would be an episode, the kids painting the fence?
Uh-huh.
It's the first one.
It's on June 3rd, Thursday, the only one.
Yeah.
And if the people like it, they can call NBC and say they'd like to see it as a
series.
NBC is putting it on for that reason.
Let me ask you one more question about Gilligan's Island.
How did you guys always have different clothes to wear?
I'm sorry.
Well, we went through that whole question, and we've just decided to ignore it.
Uh-huh.
You know, because it got so complicated.
We're going to put a big freighter, sunk it, you know, off the island so we can
dive down and get it.
They said, why bother?
You know, just let it go.
Let the howls have clothes, you know, every day, and just don't say anything.
So we just let it go.
Kind of ruined a major portion of my life, though.
I used to worry about that endlessly.
Did you think it was in a cave somewhere hidden off?
It's a pleasure meeting you, sir.
My pleasure.
And good luck with the new television program.
And again, on this very network, I guess, Thursday night?
June 3rd, 8 o'clock.
Terrific.
7 o'clock.

Terrific.
7 o'clock.
Bob Denver, ladies and gentlemen.
