Now, finally, we have another letter.
This was actually from our own late-night staff.
Dear Dave, we're all sorry to hear that cameraman Ben Franklin is retiring
after this show.
We've enjoyed his work with NBC through the years,
especially the way he photographs the letters on the viewer mail segment of
your show.
Could you possibly have a retrospective of his work?
Signed, of course, we here at the late-night staff, New York, New York.
Well, we're all sad to see that Mr. Franklin is leaving after such a fine
career,
and it certainly would be a pleasure now to show you a retrospective of the
television magic
that Mr. Ben Franklin has helped create in his long career here at NBC.
Thanks for the number of rickshaws in Japan, artificial tan.
Vermouth and gin and pictures in La Vie, Paris, yeah, how lovely it was.
Thanks for the memory of tinkling temple bells on the modern yells,
of Notre Dame and towels from all the best hotels.
How lovely it was.
You're leaving soon, right?
Uh, yes, uh, right after the show.
Well, good enough.
Have a nice retirement.
Thank you very much for your help.
Nice working with you.
Yes, sir, anytime.
Ben Franklin, ladies and gentlemen.
We'll be right back with Andrea Martin.
Okay, we're almost out of time.
Judy, nice meeting you.
Thank you very much for being here.
Excuse me one second.
I want to say goodbye to somebody.
Gene Martin is retiring from NBC today as one of our camera operators.
He's been here for 36 years.
Gene, we're going to miss you.
Thank you very much.
Congratulations.
You got out alive, buddy.
Thank you, Gene.
Take care.
We'll see you tomorrow night, folks.
Good night.
Nice to see you.
It's all right, yeah.
We got to go.
Jack, goodbye.
Goodbye, Jack.
Thank you very much.
All right, welcome back to the show.
Is there a Bill Kenney on the crew tonight?
Is there a Mr. Bill Kenney with us?
Bill, come here a second, if you don't mind.
Bill Kenney is a cameraman.
He's been operating camera number two for...
Come here, Bill.
Nice to see you.
Thanks, Dave.
Let me just tell the folks a little bit about you.
You've been working in television for 38 years.
Yes.
Started at CBS in 1950, worked there until 1972.
He's worked here at NBC for eight and a half years, beginning in 1980, right up
until tonight.
Right.
And you also worked on our morning show, didn't you?
Yes.
Started.
For as long as I've known you, you've been operating camera number two, haven't
you?
Yes.
You did a hell of a job.
Thank you.
It's been a pleasure.
And you're...
You're leaving, you're retiring, happier days ahead, play a lot of golf.
Yeah, I hope to.
Yeah.
You've been a terrific cameraman and a great friend, and we'll all miss you.
Thank you, Dave.
Thank you.
That's it, folks.
We've got to go.
Have a good weekend.
Good night, everybody.
We've got to go.
We've got to go.
I've been a bad man most of my life, even fooled with my best friend's wife.
Sad to say that I'm on my way.
I'm leaving my troubles behind.
You've got me a long ways to go.
All I've got left here is my soul, but I find that it don't belong to me.
All I've got left is burning misery.
Sad to say that I'm on my way.
I'm leaving my troubles behind, I'm leaving my troubles behind, bye, bye, bye.
Leaving my troubles behind.
Leaving my troubles behind.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
Hey, is Michael Brecker still here?
Let's bring that cat back on, because he's played so marvelously in his own set.
Give us a little tenor.
Are you ready?
Here we go from the five chord.
A one, a two, a woman, a two.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
We'll have to love you to have.
