Spinal Tap Collection on Letterman, 1982-93

Thank you, David. Hey.
Oh, my mic is on in the monitor. That's what it is.
You know, it is National Thank a Black Person Week this week,
and I'm excited about it.
I want to thank a black guy by the name of Leon Penn-Darvis
for doing such a marvelous job of kind of filling in for me last Thursday.
That's right. Leon was here.
I was skying out to the coast to do a little part in a movie, you know.
A little part in a movie.
Yeah, we're kind of excited about it. We don't want to jinx it or anything,
talk too much about it.
Does it look like a big deal? A blockbuster, as they say?
Well, you know, you fly out, you do it one day,
and as somebody said, you call it a movie.
Yeah. All right. Well, thank you, Paul.
I would like to talk to you more about the movie.
We have to move right along here tonight, but we'll talk about the movie.
We should move along.
Yeah, we'll move along here tonight, and her name really is Mrs. Christmas.
We'll be right back.
Now, how is it that you knew that Billy did that, Paul?
During a commercial, he leaned over and he said,
I write the songs.
No, no, no. How did the...
Where did you know about this?
Just hanging with the guy, you know, and the...
We're in a movie together.
We don't necessarily know each other, but yet we have a...
But we know.
But we know.
What movie are you guys in together?
We're in a very funny movie called Spinal Tap, which is directed by Rob Reiner,
and it's a totally improvised film.
It's very funny.
Well, this is the one that...
Yeah. I did a few, a little day.
He's very funny.
Now, when can people look forward to this film in their neighborhood theaters?
This Spinal Tap opened sometime after Purim, doesn't it?
Yeah.
Or Two Bish Vah. That's one of the two.
But it's fun.
It's a legitimate movie.
It's a good movie.
Now, speaking of movies...
Ha, ha.
Ha, ha.
Why do you have that?
Somebody mailed it.
They mailed it to me, you know.
You never know what you get in the mail.
Now, you have other things that you brought to show us tonight.
Yes.
I have a clip from, uh...
Well, it's about, rather than from, this new movie that I'm in.
Oh, this is Spinal Tap.
This is Spinal Tap, which is so-called because it's about a rock and roll band
called Spinal Tap.
Yeah.
There's a photograph they have here of the band.
Got it right here, Harry.
Yeah.
And this is the one our friend Paul Schaefer is.
Paul tells us he's a major star of this motion picture.
Paul is, uh, a major figure in the picture.
He figures prominently in the plot.
And I want to say something.
I've worked with this man on Saturday Night Live.
I've worked with him in the movies.
This is a heterosexual man, ladies and gentlemen.
That's what I'm nice of you to say.
I mean, if I could just refer to my part in the movie, all I know is that the
janitor was hysterical
when he was cleaning my stuff up off the cutting room floor.
Off the cutting room floor, yeah.
But, uh, he's the only one, I think, who will get most of the stuff I did.
But it's a fabulous, fabulous picture.
Why don't you talk a little bit about it?
Well, thank you, Paul.
Since you're here every night, I think I will.
Um, it's, uh, it's a movie about a rock and roll band, and it's in the lab
right now.
Uh-huh.
There's some, there were some scratch problems with the print, so...
So we don't have a print...
We don't have a clip from the movie, but the film people were real serious
about having a clip,
and your people were, so I just, I got a clip from the editing room kind of in
a hurry,
and, uh, I've seen it.
I think you'll find it interesting.
Okay.
Provocative.
Well, let's take a look at it, since you went to all this trouble.
Uh, Harry Shearer providing us now with a clip, uh, of his own.
The gall of the Alpenhorn echoes across the Danskin Peninsula, part of Denmark's
cheese belt,
signaling to all those with nothing better to do, the start of Scandinavia's
happiest tradition,
the Chilgenpjost, or cheese festival, or Jürgenbelk.
Cross-country cheese rolling, requiring years of experience to handle these 100-pound
wheels of Edom.
The four-century history of this challenging spectacle has seen only one
serious accident,
when a spectator was speedily crushed by a runaway Gouda.
There are displays of amazing artistic skill, like cheese blowing.
And just for laughs, an answer to the age-old question,
are you putting cheese in your pants, or are you just glad to see me?
The winner.
And as the jubilant day fades into another suicide-filled Scandinavian evening,
the festival-goers crown the king and queen, truly, the royalty of cheese.
Oh, that's great, Harry.
That's terrific.
Now, the movie.
That has nothing, that's not in the movie, it has nothing to do with the movie,
the movie's not about that at all.
But we enjoyed it, and that's all it counts.
That's all it counts.
That's right.
And if people really like it, you know, we could go back into editing and put
some cheese in, you know.
Yeah.
What do you know?
Sure.
Now, I did bring something else.
Yeah.
Now, when does the film open?
This is Final Tap.
Opens March.
Oh, March.
So we've got a ways to look forward to that yet.
We've got a whole three months to save up.
Well, when it opens up, come back and see us again.
Thank you.
Nice to see you again.
Very serious, folks.
We'll be back with Morris Sante.
Hi there.
My next guest, this man has directed, he has also co-written and is co-starring
in a very funny film, which opens nationwide next month.
This is a very funny piece of work.
It's called This Is Spinal Tap.
The movie chronicles the American tour of a heavy metal rock and roll band
called Spinal Tap.
And here they are in performance.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the man responsible for the motion picture,
Mr. Rob Reiner.
Thank you very much for being here.
This man over here, this Paul Schaefer man, is a very well-known, beautiful
human being, as we all know.
And he's wonderful in the film.
You ruined me.
You ruined my career.
You killed me in the film.
Babe, babe.
You killed me.
I was brilliant in your film.
I had to edit.
You cut my whole part out of the film.
You left me.
I was brilliant.
No, it's not true.
It's terrible.
Laughs.
Left out of the cutting room floor.
It's not true.
The rats are laughing now as they come in, you know.
They're rats.
I cut this man together.
I cut this man together and made him look beautiful on film.
He killed me.
No, great.
He's not grateful.
Kids, kids.
No, no, that's all.
No, he's great.
And you're a prince.
I love working with you.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
Get out of here.
Get out of here.
Beautiful human being.
Paul Schaefer.
And you.
No, no, no, don't start.
You're quite attractive.
He's a handsome guy.
Now this.
Not quite as handsome as Alan Thicke, but you know, he's got everything else.
Whoa.
But he has everything else going for him.
The space in the teeth.
See?
We both have that.
It's a sign of.
We both have that?
It's a sign of intelligence, I think.
Oh.
Jeez.
I don't know.
It never showed up in any of my records.
Anyway, this motion picture.
I saw this a couple of weeks ago.
This, and this is going to sound like a phony compliment, but I haven't laughed
as hard in
a movie in two years as I did.
Oh, good.
Thank you.
You guys did a really, really nice job of it.
Thank you.
And Michael McKean.
Michael McKean.
It does a wonderful job.
And Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer.
Yeah.
Who's a good friend of Paul's as well.
Yeah.
They're wonderful in it.
They're, the band is composed of, there are five members of the band.
Two of them are actual Englishmen who have played in rock and roll bands over
the years.
And Chris and Harry and Michael are Americans.
And they're all accomplished musicians.
And they have also played with bands.
But they're Americans.
And the characters, the accents are flawless.
I mean, Chris's performance is seamless.
I mean, you can't, I mean, he is a British rock and roller.
I mean, you cannot see the seams.
He's playing a really nice British dumb guy.
Just sort of dumb.
No, not sort of dumb.
Quite dumb.
Quite dumb.
They're all quite dumb.
Talk a little bit more about the film.
It's actually what you call a rockumentary.
You're Marty DeBerge.
I play Marty DeBerge, who is a filmmaker documenting the tour of this British
heavy metal band that's
been together 15 years.
They're legendary.
They've been, they come to be known as Britain's loudest band.
They are on tour in America.
They haven't toured in six years.
They're touring in America to promote an album called Smell the Glove.
Which, they run into some problems because Smell the Glove, the cover art is,
the record company
has some problems with the cover art.
They call it sexist.
It shows a naked woman, a heavily oiled naked woman on all fours with a dog
collar around
her neck with a glove shoved in her face to sniff.
And for some reason, they think that's sexist.
I don't know why.
So they wind up making a compromise with the artwork.
And it winds up being this album, which, as you can tell, is, it's a lot like
the White
album, except it's, this is Smell the Glove.
And this record, by the way, will be available in stores.
So look for it.
It's on Polygram.
This is an actual record coming off of the movie, yeah.
Yes, a record coming off of the album.
And it looks like this.
So you can't miss it.
It looks like the divider in the store, but don't buy that.
Buy the actual album.
I think a good way to describe where this band is in the great scheme of rock
and roll bands
is the marquee at the Holiday Inn in One Stop, where they're performing.
They're in Chicago, and the marquee at the Holiday Inn welcomes them.
And it says, welcome, the National Company of the Wiz and Spinal Tap.
And they get, they get billing below that.
And also, when they play an outdoor kind of amusement park, they get second
billing to
a puppet show.
Yeah, yeah.
So, they're, they're fighting for survival.
And Paul, Paul plays the, the, the, the record label PR guy in Chicago, doesn't
it?
Yes, Artie Fufkin.
Paul plays Artie Fufkin, who's a, a promo guy.
Yeah.
Who was not doing a good job promoting the band.
And he books them into a, a, a, a record store where they're signing autographs,
signing
albums, and nobody shows up.
And, uh, Paul is, uh, very chagrined at this and, uh, asks them to, uh, well, I'm
not going
to give it away.
Yeah.
And, and, Paul, if you get to be a big star off of this, remember, we gave you
a day off
to be in this movie.
That's right.
Yeah.
That's right.
I'm very grateful for you.
Uh, we, let's take a look at some, uh, some footage here from the motion
picture.
This is Spinal Tap.
You know what we're going to look at?
Uh, yes, I think this is an interview sequence where I'm interviewing the band
members at,
uh, one of, uh, uh, I think that's at the beginning of the picture.
Okay.
It talks about the history of the band.
This is, uh, documentarian, uh, Marty DeBergey talking to the members of Spinal
Tap.
Let's, uh, talk a little bit about the history of the group.
I understand, Nigel, you and David originally started the band, uh, back in,
when was it,
1964?
Well, before that, we were in different groups.
I was in a group called The Creatures, which was a skiffle group.
I was a lovely lads.
Yeah.
And then we looked at each other and said, well, as well join up, you know, and,
uh, so we
became, uh, The Originals.
Right.
And, uh, we had to change our name, actually.
Well, there was another group in the East End called The Originals.
And then we had to rename ourselves and-
New Originals.
New Originals.
And then, uh, they became the Regulars.
They changed their name back to The Regulars.
We thought, well, we could, we could go back to the Originals about what's the
point.
But we became the Tensmen at that point.
Stop wasting my time.
You know what I want.
You know what I need.
Oh, maybe you don't.
Do I have to come right, right, out and tell you everything?
Give me some money.
Give me some money.
Yeah.
This is final time.
I'm sorry, go a
