Our next guest is one of the stars of Saturday Night Live and is currently
making a film with Tom Hanks called The Man with One Red Shoe.
Here now is a clip of him at work on Saturday Night Live. This will be Jim Belushi.
Watch closely.
Please welcome Jim Belushi.
Jim, Jim, Jim, hi.
Nice to see you.
Thank you.
How are you doing?
I'm doing good.
You're doing good.
Yeah, thanks.
You, actually, all of us out here in New York had some time off. There was a
strike and so forth.
Right.
How much time did you end up being away from the show?
Actually, we had about five weeks total off the show.
Now, what do you do in that period of time? Do you stay here and just find
other things to do? Do you go back to Chicago?
Well, I stayed here for a while and kind of hung around, and then I went back
to Chicago to try to find some work, you know, try to get me.
Now, what kind of work do you look for?
Well, it's, uh, five weeks you can't really do a play or anything, so there's a
couple friends of mine own a couple businesses, so I, uh, so I worked in this
restaurant, uh, Stevie B's rib place, you know.
Now, but you did this as a goof, or you just...
Well, no, actually, it keeps my mind busy, you know. I, uh...
No, I just sit. I get, like, real depressed, so I was cooking. You know, my
family was in the restaurant business for a long time.
Yeah.
So, uh, he let me cook the ribs, you know. I don't wear a hair nut, though.
Uh, so you would now, this is serious, you'd go in every day and cook the ribs?
No, no, no, wait.
Or is it just like you drive by once and say, eh, let me do that for a few
minutes?
No, no, no. I worked the lunches. He just opened for lunch.
Just for lunch, yeah.
There were only two or three customers. I had plenty of time to work it out,
you know.
But he let me eat.
In the kitchen with the help.
With the help, I got to eat.
And the hair nut.
And the hair nut.
Yeah, yeah.
So, uh, the hair nut, I, kind of bugged me.
Yeah.
But, uh, I looked like Ruth Buzzy, you know.
Uh, tell me about the movie with, uh, Tom Hanks and who else did you mention?
Laurie Singer?
Uh, Laurie Singer's in it.
The Man with One Red Shoe?
The Man with One Red Shoe.
It's a remake of, um, A Tall Blonde Man with One Black Shoe.
Frenchville.
And, uh...
No, is he really...
A Tall Blonde Man with One Black Shoe.
Yeah.
Yeah, sure.
And, uh, Damnie Coleman's in it.
Um, Ed Herman's in it.
Uh, Garrett Graham.
There's a lot of people in it.
Yeah.
And what do you play?
I play, uh, Tom Hanks' like, uh, you know, goofy kind of crazy guy friend, you
know.
Yeah.
I get kind of caught up in all this, uh...
I wish I could bring a clip, but they won't, uh...
We don't have a clip of this film?
No, no, they won't.
Uh, they're still busy editing me out of it, so...
We don't have a clip of this man's film?
Oh, they're busy editing you out?
Yeah, you know.
I'm sorry.
I'm kind of ate up too much time, and they edit me out.
Now, speaking of that, which is obviously a joke, but speaking of that, you
were in a film, uh...
Well, yeah.
Directed by...
Okay, go ahead.
Brian DePaul.
Yeah, yeah.
That was my first film, actually, and it got me all my work today.
Mm-hmm.
And, uh, I got a clip of that.
I got fired from that movie, but, uh...
I was a little temperamental, a little pushy on the set.
I was an extra.
You were an extra.
And, uh, and why did you get fired?
Well, I was, uh, I was a little aggressive, you know, I, uh...
Kind of, like, stayed in the scenes a little too long.
One, one scene, uh, I was walking by, and I had a coat and a hat on and a scarf,
and I walked by and went around the corner.
I took my hat and my coat off and my scarf, and I came back as another person.
I'm a character actor, I figure, you know, I can, uh, change character.
Now, did, uh, did the director notice this as it was happening?
No.
Actually, he looked at the camera operator.
I'm surprised, because they usually notice that stuff.
And, uh, they noticed in dailies the next day.
I heard the story that, uh, the Palma was watching the, uh, the dailies, and he
goes, uh...
Who is that guy?
Get rid of him.
Now, this, we have some clips.
Right.
This, we actually have...
Okay, now, do you need to know anything about the scene other than you're in it
90 times, or...?
No, um...
No, just, just a regular extra kind of scene, you know...
And this was, what was the name of this film?
The Fury.
The Fury.
All right, and this was, uh, your first film.
This was my first film.
Jim Belushi working with Brian De Palma in The Fury.
Right.
It was a beach...
As an extra.
It was a beach scene, so, uh, they shot this scene about 28...
All right, see the garbage can there?
Yeah.
See that guy's leaning on the garbage can?
Yeah.
He's supposed to be psychic.
Now, watch this, right behind him.
There he is, right there!
See you?
Yeah, whoa, there you are.
See?
Okay, now, now, you gotta keep watching that pop up again.
I just keep walking back...
There he is!
Now, there's another scene where I just, like, buzz by again.
That, that name just came to my head.
I don't know.
They probably cut that part.
No, there he is!
All right.
I think I have one more time there.
Okay, next...
I was really a jerk, man.
The top criminal members of the U.S.
There he is.
Right there.
See him right in the back?
See him right there?
Come back there.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
My phone booth.
Four times.
Four times.
Now, that's awesome.
If you can get into a 30-second scene four times as an extra, you're really
earning your money.
Well, yeah, I was, uh, I was working pretty hard, yeah.
Yeah.
Um, and The Man with Red Shoe comes out soon, I would guess?
Uh, July.
That's not until July 19th.
Oh, okay.
Uh, and the show continues?
You got two more this season?
Two more?
Uh, and then, uh, there's a Best Of in May, and then, uh, then we're off for
the summer.
Okay.
Well, have a real nice summer, and thanks for your time, Jim.
Okay.
Come back and see us again.
Okay, thank you.
Jim Belucci, folks.
We'll be right back here.
We'll be right back.
