Three Chris Elliott Parodies & the Stevie Nicks Flap on Letterman, 1985-88

Welcome to Frenchman's Bend, a town ruled by the iron fist of one man, a town
steaming
with the passion of one woman, a town brought to the brink of murder by the
arrival of a
young drifter.
What'd you do to my wife?
Jason Robards, Ava Gardner, Sybil Shepard, and Don Johnson.
The Long Hot Summer Sunday.
And The Long Hot Summer on NBC here the other night?
Uh-oh.
Well, why don't you tell the folks what happened there?
I was in The Long Hot Summer.
There I am.
It was a small part, but a part I was proud of, no less.
Yeah, but what happened exactly?
Well, I'll tell you something.
Jocko in the tape department here threw a commercial in right over my scene and
no one saw it.
Can you repeat that?
You mean there's a mix-up?
A guy ran a commercial when it was supposed to be the show?
I'll tell you, I know it sounds far-fetched.
I was in all the promos.
You must have seen those.
I think you have a promo if you want to take a look at it.
I was in those.
Do we have it?
Do we have one?
Okay, well, yeah.
Let's look at the promo of The Long Hot Summer.
A town ruled by the Iron Fist of one man.
A town steaming with the passion of one woman.
A town brought to the brink of murder by the arrival of a young drifter.
What did you do to my wife?
First, Jason Robards, Ava Gardner, Sybil Shepard, Don Johnson, and a very
special appearance
by The Fugitive Guy's Chris Elliott.
A long, hot summer, Sunday.
Oh, my God.
Wow.
Wow.
I'm sorry about that mix-up.
It looked like you were terrific.
I actually wasn't that good, so it doesn't really bother me that much.
David, I think you're single-handedly bringing Variety back to television.
Oh, thank God.
And not a minute too soon.
Yeah.
How was your weekend?
What did you do?
My weekend was pretty nice.
I saw a few live musical acts around town.
Anything good?
Yeah, Marshall Crenshaw.
Oh, yeah, he's been on the show.
Yeah, that's right.
He was on.
He's sounding real good.
Yeah.
Well, how about your weekend?
Oh, you know, I had a weekend.
Spent the entire weekend alone, sitting in my room, waiting for the Stevie Nicks
video
to come on.
Ah.
Okay.
Now, do you know this woman?
I know some of the band members know her.
Steve Jordan has worked with her recently.
He's on her.
Get her on the show.
Can you ask her to be on the show?
She's in New Zealand.
Oh, she's not in New Zealand.
Get her on the show.
Can she be on the show?
Yeah, I'll book her.
All right.
Yeah.
You have the power, by the way.
The band member, a lot of people don't understand this.
The band actually has the power to book people, right on the spot.
Be on the show.
Is this thing working all right?
We're going to call Arnie Barnes, our friend in Nebraska.
You know, it's tough to dial on TV and concentrate.
I don't know why that is, but it's tough.
Yeah, get Stevie Nicks on here.
That'd be great.
What's the name of that song?
The new video?
What is the name of the new video?
How come I hear Paul in the phone?
I've just placed a call to Paul.
Oh, thank you very much.
Welcome back to the show.
How are you doing, Paul?
Great, Dave.
Exciting show today.
Look at what I got here.
What's that?
Well, you know, Monday or Tuesday, we were talking about Stevie Nicks.
You love Stevie Nicks.
I spent the entire weekend waiting for her video to come on.
And so we deputized Steve and other members of the band to book her for the
show and have
her on as a guest.
Because you saw the video.
You loved the video.
Yeah.
We thought it would be fun to have her here.
Yeah.
Okay, so now I get this telegram today.
This comes to us from Frontline Management, 9044 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles,
California,
home of show business, international.
These people manage Stevie Nicks, right?
This is correct.
Okay.
David, the telegram begins.
Although we don't know what instilled your desire to have Stevie appear on your
show.
Yeah, that is hard to figure, isn't it?
What a brain trust these guys are.
Well, why would they want her on?
So they can't.
They say, we must decline the invitation.
Although it's nothing personal, it's just something we don't normally do.
Now.
Apparently Stevie's manager is here tonight.
Anyway, now listen to this.
Now you tell me, should we be insulted by this or not?
We would appreciate it if you would not mention Stevie as a guest in an
upcoming show as you did last evening.
We can't mention that we would like to have her on the show or that she might
even be on the show.
So from now on, Paul, just, we won't mention that she's going to be on the show.
We won't mention that we're even interested in getting her on the show.
We can't say we would like to have her as a guest on the show.
Okay?
We can't say.
No, we can't say that.
Can't even mention.
We can't say tomorrow night Stevie Nicks will be here.
I think someone back there is having a lower GI.
We can't mention that Stevie Nicks will be on this show.
We can't even say we like her.
We'd love to have her.
No, I don't think we can even mention her name.
But we do, oddly enough, we have some dates of other TV appearances she'll be
making.
So we can pass those along.
Hal, go ahead and roll that and we'll show the people.
These will be upcoming TV appearances by Stevie Nicks.
But, of course, not on this show.
And take a look at these.
Jot them down on your TV guide there and use them appropriately.
Well, there she is in her new video.
And February 24th she'll be on Our Magazine.
Then two days later she'll be on The Donahue Show.
And then February 28th she'll be hosting Friday night videos with Howie Mandel.
So those are just a couple of the places you can see Stevie Nicks.
And we'll get you some more dates where you'll be able to see her on upcoming
television appearances later.
But she won't be on this show.
Weasel Management Company.
Marv, before we get into the videotape we have here,
some more dates of upcoming Stevie Nicks TV appearances.
Hal, let's go ahead and take a look at the other on that list.
Okay, this is, here she comes.
Stevie Nicks will be able to see her on March 3rd.
It's a Best of Carson, a repeat of a show that originally aired in 1982.
Then she'll be a judge on putting on the hits on March 6th.
And then March 8th she'll be doing a Facts of Life walk-on.
So Stevie Nicks telling us she can't wait.
No, we can't wait either, Stevie.
Okay, so we'll keep you posted if we get any more of those.
On the same subject.
Yes, sir.
My brother Al wanted to have a...
Oh, stop with these.
...Shortford hockey puck.
Did you...
Has he sold any of these, Marv?
It...
The business is flourishing.
I'm sure it is.
All right.
And he wants to thank you for all your help, all the nice things you've been
saying.
They're selling like hotcakes.
Too bad they're not selling like hockey pucks.
But, you know...
People have been calling.
Stevie Nicks management won't let her do this show.
But she is doing some other TV programs.
And we want to keep you posted on those.
Hal, go ahead and roll those other upcoming TV shows she'll be on.
We're not even allowed to mention her being on this show.
But here's some other shows you can look forward to seeing her on.
March 20th you'll see her on Wall Street Week.
And then March 22nd she'll be on Greg Gumbel's Sports Talk show on ESPN.
Then on the 23rd it's an appearance on People's Court.
It's the case of the two hot curlers.
So you won't be seeing her here but those are some other places you can see her.
All of those management decisions made on her behalf.
Weasel management out there in L.I.
Okay.
All right.
Listen carefully.
We have three more dates on television shows.
You can see Stevie Nicks coming up in the, well, pretty much next month.
Hal, go ahead and roll them and let's take a look at them here.
And I think this pretty much wraps it up.
Beginning March 24th, Stevie will be co-hosting the Sally Jessie Raphael show.
Then on March 30th she'll be with Ed and Dick on TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes.
And then finally, March 31st, Circus of the Stars spotting for Juice Newton on
the ring.
Steve, Stevie Nicks.
Spotting, yeah.
Yeah.
Her management taking extra good care of her.
David, thank you.
I don't know, you know, we're young, we're in show business.
The world is our oyster, don't you think?
Got the world by the tail, buddy.
We got it.
Tonight is Thursday night.
We answer our voluminous viewer mail on Thursday nights.
I got this telegram a couple of nights ago from this management company.
What's the name of it, Paul?
Who are they?
Is it Meathead Management?
It's Frontline Management.
Yeah.
No, Frontline Management.
That's right.
Stevie Nicks is...
They said we couldn't talk about Stevie Nicks, so I don't know.
We would appreciate it if you would not mention Stevie as a guest on an
upcoming show, as you did last evening.
We were talking about Stevie Nicks.
We all love her, think she's terrific.
Wanted her to be on the show.
We get a telegram here saying we can't talk about her.
So now, I get a call from the guy today out there at Frontline Management.
Here's the address, by the way, if you want to drive by.
It's Los Angeles, California.
And they say now that they didn't send us this telegram.
Oh, really?
Yeah, they didn't send this telegram.
And furthermore, they're talking to their attorneys, and they really didn't
care to be called weasels.
So, when I said weasels, I only used that word in the best possible sense.
So, you know, maybe they're not weasels.
I'm sorry if you're not weasels, then...
But a high percentage of people in show business, in music, are weasels.
Are weasels.
But that doesn't mean there couldn't be a slight percentage, like these folks
here at the goofball management, who aren't weasels.
Aren't weasels.
No, no.
Frontline management.
I'm sorry, frontline management.
It's only a joke.
It really...
This whole thing is a joke.
Do we have some Stevie Nicks we can look at?
Hal, is that loaded up and ready to go?
It's only a joke.
We love Stevie.
We love music.
We love the management.
Here she is now.
Never looking better, ladies and gentlemen.
There she is.
Stevie Nicks asking the musical question, I can't wait.
There you go.
Thank you, Stevie.
So, don't get any...
Yeah, exactly.
But don't get any silly ideas about suing us, because it's only a joke.
We have nothing but the highest regard for meatball management.
Front...
What is it?
Frontline...
Frontline management.
We have nothing.
In fact, we had this discussion earlier today.
If I needed a musical management firm, I'd go right there to the front...
Oh, no.
No, it's a joke.
We love everyone in show business.
Yes, we do.
But we really do like Stevie Nicks, and we'd like her to be on the show.
You love Stevie.
You were telling me...
We don't have a problem with Stevie.
It's just these people that sent us the telegram.
But they say now they didn't send us the telegram,
so that means that it's some kind of random act of terrorism here.
Please don't sue us.
I have a cold.
Just one last issue on this Stevie Nicks deal.
I finally talked to somebody from her management company,
Pinhead Management.
Is that who it is?
Yeah, that's the name of the company.
I talked to a guy.
I'm pretty sure his name was Irv,
but I don't know any more than that.
And he said that Stevie would be calling,
and she never called.
That's it on Stevie.
By the way, do we have a little of that video we can take a look at?
This is Stevie Nicks and her latest video, ladies and gentlemen.
I can't wait.
Get a hold of something.
It's Stevie Nicks.
Watch closely.
You'll be glad you did.
Stevie?
Stevie Nicks asking the musical question,
I can't wait.
There you go.
Thank you, Stevie.
That's what you call sneak preview video.
Something going on there.
Strange.
David Letterman.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What is the first line of that song?
Midnight and the kitties are sleeping.
All the kitties are sleeping.
Yeah.
That's what you told me, anyway.
This is a big night for me.
It's a great night.
We've got a great audience.
Look what I got here, Paul.
You know, all week long we've been talking about Stevie Nicks and
