I'm fascinated by small animals among the chickens because when I was in the
eighth grade in Oklahoma, a friend of mine who I knew was—let's see—due to
the kind
of muted ability for metaphor that belongs to the eighth grader in junior high
school,
we called this guy White Hair Johnson. He was an albino. He played clarinet in
the band.
He lived out on a farm, and he never really got kidded like most kids would,
because he
had a Cushman Eagle, remember those? Little runny things. Everybody else was
driving that
big red thing from Sears, you know, the square ones? Remember those? Well, he
invited me
out to his folks' farm one weekend for the weekend, and I was anxious to go so
I could
ride his Cushman. We spent the morning of the first day there dumping fodder on
a hired man,
which is, which is, until you've tried it, one of life's, you know, really
hidden pleasures.
Because you get to stand on top of a huge pile of fodder is really obnoxious
stuff. It's got
a terrible odor. It doesn't look appetizing at all. You know, and you just
throw it down at him, and he
really doesn't know whether or not somebody's dumping it on him, because it
tends to fall off from the top anyhow.
Which makes you wonder why we even bothered to do it. Now that I think about it.
But, uh, we soon tired of that, I suppose after we realized that we didn't need
to be there. And, uh,
went ambling back towards the farmhouse, and Whitehair stopped and said, "How
would you like to kill a chicken?"
And I said, "Oh, sure." So, Whitehair grabbed one. I don't know what his first
name is. There really
ought to be a better nickname for an albino. But, uh, so he reached down. The
chicken coop is just out the back door, really.
So he reached down, and he picked up a chicken, and what you do is you grab it
by the neck, and spin it around over your head, and it'll die.
And, uh, let's see. So, I reached down to pick up my chicken, got my chicken,
and spun it around my head, and it didn't die.
And, you know, Whitehair gave me an odd look. So I spun it again, and again,
and again, and the thing, I really wrenched the heck out of it, and it wouldn't
die.
So, uh, Whitehair said, "Well, why don't you beat it up against the side of the
coop?"
So I let go of its head, and took its feet, and started pounding the coop with
it.
And it still didn't die. It didn't make much noise, but it wasn't dead.
So, so finally, we had to, we wound up backing a tractor over its head, and
leaving, and leaving it under the tractor for about half an hour.
The next day was Sunday, so we had chicken.
