Our next guest has one of the most popular morning radio programs here in New
York City,
over there on WFAN.
Ladies and gentlemen, please say hello to the host of Imus in the Morning, Don
Imus.
Oh, Don!
Don, how you doing?
Thank you very much for being on the show.
This is your old home.
You worked here at NBC for years and years, didn't you?
I was here 17 years.
I think I still owe a couple of plays on Aqualine, by the way.
There's a couple of the years I remember when I was here and it was always,
they would get
me sobered up whenever there was a payola scandal.
And the NBC lawyers would all come downstairs to the second floor and they'd
say, "You know,
Don, we're playing you to play the records."
Yeah.
You know?
The record company's not supposed to pay you to play the record.
Yeah.
I said, "Well, I thought I was getting paid to be funny," and, no.
Yeah.
Now, do you want to mention that anymore?
Because I know that there were some moments in your career, some years when you
were maybe
a little cloudier than other years, but--
I was here at 17, I remember, like, three of you.
Yeah.
But--
You weren't here four years, I say, "Who's the tall guy?"
I have no idea.
But all of that's behind you, isn't it?
Oh, well, it's behind me today, you know.
Yeah.
Well, take it a day at a time.
That's how it works.
And you have just purchased a new home or within the last year?
Well, see, this is a nightmare.
I decide--I live in Manhattan, but I think, "Well, I'll go--I was going to go
to Hamptons."
Right.
There's been a brochure of a house in Southport.
Now, Southport, as you know, is a little community on the water wedged in
between Westport and
Fairfield, very pretentious, precious community.
Lovely.
Old money?
Yeah, and only white people.
Yeah.
Scrappies, screaming yuppies.
Yeah.
So, and I get a place right on the water, and up the road is the Pequot Yacht
Club.
All right.
Now, this is a yacht club that wouldn't admit Phil Donahue.
Yeah.
And, I mean, would you?
No, he's fine.
But nobody wants Marlo down there screaming at the help.
Yeah.
They don't want that.
So, I think I'm their kind of guy.
I'm willing to wear clothes with fish on them.
Yeah.
And I would be a party.
Yeah.
I don't get any invitation.
I get anonymous notes on Pequot Yacht Club stationery, drop dead, stuff like
that.
The only way you'll be a member here is if you buy the club.
Yeah.
So, in order to escalate the process, I pledged to shoot a boater a day.
Until they let me in.
Well, then my friend, Mike Lupig, you know the sports writer?
Yeah.
He calls me and he says, "My wife's grandfather lives in Southport, 85 years
old.
And he's a member of the Yacht Club."
I figured, well, what am I worried about?
Sure, you're in.
No.
No.
What they called for was if I would exempt him from the executions.
Well, I said, I said no.
No.
Yeah.
It becomes an empty threat then, right?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
And you know how people show up at your house uninvited?
You know how that happens.
I've heard that, yeah.
So, we're renovating this place and it's all completely gutted.
There's just stacks of wood and saws and hammers around and stuff.
And I'm there and I'm like living in a construction site.
I get a knock on the door and it's Bob Wright, the president of NBC from GE,
and his lovely
wife, Suzanne, and their two really well-behaved children.
Uh-huh.
Like sedated.
No, I mean, they're sweet.
They're sweet.
Yes.
But unplugged is what you're saying.
Yeah.
And so, they want to look around.
Well, you know, what do you...
Now, do you know these people or are they just house hunting?
What is...
Well, I don't...
You know, I don't know.
I mean, they just showed up.
I mean, I...
He was...
When GE bought NBC, I was still here.
Oh, I see.
So, you do have a relationship with the man?
Well, sort of, but I mean, I didn't...
You know, we weren't friends or we weren't hanging out together.
So, this house I have is right on...
And this is right about the time that Today Show blew up, you know?
So...
Which time?
So, I figured, well, he's bummed and he wants to come hang out with me.
So...
And I have one glass and a jug of Gatorade, so I don't think I can offer him.
And, you know, she's looking around like she's going to have a heart attack if
she has to touch anything.
And she's, you know...
So, we're standing out by the...
We're standing out by the deck and the harbor is right here and it's high tide
and the water is rushing by.
So, I look at the kids and I figure, well, why not entertain them?
I said, you know, a body floated by here.
Earlier this morning.
And there's kind of a little flicker of like they recognize someone who said
something to them and...
No, they're really sweet kids.
Yeah, nice kids.
I also know they're here tonight.
And they said, really?
I said, yeah, it looked like Deborah Norville.
And Mrs. Wright goes, we have to go, Bob.
And that's been six months ago and I've never heard of them.
Well, yeah, they'll be back.
Yeah.
Now, what did you...
I know you worked in radio.
I first became aware of you when you were working in Cleveland.
Yeah.
And then from Cleveland, I guess you came to New York.
But what did you do before Cleveland?
There was California, Arizona.
You worked there.
You're from Arizona, right?
Yeah.
What kind of stuff did you do before you got to be a big time broadcaster?
Well, I started out making rock and roll records that were just hideous.
And back in the early 60s, and I recorded with H.B. Barnum and Johnny Otis for
a couple of old record labels like Duto records and RV records and stuff.
But they were hideous records.
Yeah.
And they were so horrible, I wound up living in a laundromat in Hollywood.
And I used to crawl in and sleep behind the dryers.
And then, you know, women would be in there doing their clothes at 3 o'clock in
the morning.
And I'd go around and get money out of phone booths to get donuts and stuff.
Anyway, I'd make a long, tedious story bearable here.
I wound up working in a uranium mine up at the Grand Canyon.
Is that right, really?
This is a stupid life.
Really, it is.
And then I was in an underground cave-in.
And then I went back to California, and I worked for the railroad for a while.
And I was in a train wreck.
Wow.
One of those huge engines turned over, and the engineer was drunk, you know.
Of course.
Yeah.
So, that's why every time I hear about an Amtrak thing, you know they're drunk.
Yeah, exactly, yeah.
We used to take these trains from L.A. to Indio and sleep on the train.
You know, they'd be going 70 miles an hour, and we'd all be asleep.
Anyway, I was in the accident and sued them and got in the radio.
And things are going better than ever in your career right now, aren't they?
You're really on an upswing here.
Yeah.
Yeah, well, that's good, I think.
Don't you think so?
Well, yeah, it is.
I mean, there was a time when I could have never done this show because I
wouldn't have
been able to find the building even though I worked here.
Even though you were in the building.
I was in the building.
I went to the building.
I went to the building.
All right.
We need to pause here, but we'll be right back with Don Anderson.
Hey, the thrill is gone.
Huh?
Is that B.B. King?
No, B.B. King.
No, it ain't gone, is it?
Right here.
It ain't gone.
No, it ain't gone.
No, it ain't gone.
Kids, we're out of time.
We got to go.
We'll see you tomorrow night.
Thanks for being here.
Good night, everybody.
Welcome back to the show.
All night long, we're bowling on 53rd Street.
We have time for a little more bowling.
Dick, are you out there?
Are you ready to go?
I sure am, Dick.
What do you have now, Dick?
We got some wind chimes up here.
Dick, what are those cops doing back there?
I don't know what the heck they're doing.

Very nice.
Very impressive, Dick.
Nice.
Dick, what are those cops doing back there?
I don't know what the heck they're doing.
You guys just, you guys get out of here.
Here we go.
Dick Weber, wind chimes.
All right, here we go.
All right.
Lovely shot.
Hey!
Hey!
Hey!

I think Dick's under the impression he won something.
Look at that.

Yeah, okay.
Our next guest is a veteran radio personality
whose program is now broadcast to 30 cities across this great land of ours.

Folks, please say hello to Don Imus.
Don, come on out.
Yes, sir.
How you doing?
I'm fine.
How are you?
Good.
Welcome to the program.
Thank you very much.
Let me ask you a couple of things about your show that I know from listening to
the program.
All right.
I'm interested in and more than a little envious of your relationship with
President Clinton.
Well, back in March of 92, I was supporting Jerry Brown.
And he won the, well, yeah, I know.
And he won the Connecticut primary.
And then so we booked him on the show.
He called us.
Right.
As a candidate eager for exposure.
Yeah.
And he blew us off.
Ah.
Because he had to do the CBS Morning News.
Mm-hmm.
And he said he couldn't do both.
Right.
And I got to thinking, if you can't do the CBS Morning News and this radio
program, how can
you run the country?
So I threw my support to Clinton.
Right.
And then coincidentally, we got a call from them because they were desperate.
I mean, he was, that was when the Jennifer Flowers thing broke.
And, I mean, they were so desperate, they wanted to come on with us.
So, I mean, he was a dead man, you know?
Yeah.
And so you pushed him over the top.
You get him in the White House.
And now, like, he calls you.
He called you last week or so, right?
I got a call from Mark Guerin, who is the Deputy Chief of Staff, last Wednesday.
And he said, Bubba wants to come on in the morning.
Don, is that exactly what he said?
Yeah, pretty close.
I said, well, we have soupy sales and could you make it Friday?
He said, you know, we can't even get soupy sales.
So, he, well, he's eager to come on because I'm not going to, I'm not Ted Koppel
and I'm not Tim Russell.
Not Dan Rather.
You're not going to gun him.
No, of course not.
Just lob up a bunch of softballs.
But I did want to ask him, you know about the AstroTurf?
I heard about, in the back of his El Camino, his old pickup truck.
And, you know, he intimated that that was Ford, but he didn't clarify it, you
know.
So, I really wanted, it's not large enough to play football.
So, I said, what was it for?
And, he said, well, you're old enough to know.
And, he said, and then he laughed, you know, this goober laugh of his, you know.
Like, what a suave guy, you know, getting them in the back of the pickup on AstroTurf.
I mean, you know, why?
So, he said, well, I said, that's like trying to tell people you don't inhale,
you know.
He said, well, I didn't inhale in the back of the pickup.
What is your impression of the guy, actually?
What's at the center of the man?
What is the core of this guy?
Do you like the guy?
Is he a decent guy?
Does he mean well?
I think he wants to eat and get babes.
Now, there, there's a campaign slogan.
Yeah, that's all you need.
Easy money there.
I like him.
You know, I mean, I, uh, and, you know, he likes me, so, I mean, you've got to
kind of wonder about that, you know.
You have another relationship on and off the show, your brother in El Paso,
Texas, Fred.
I get a big kick out of Fred.
I want to know more about Fred.
What can you tell me about this guy?
Well, I have some sort of bad news.
No, no.
Yeah.
Fred has a dog, a Siberian husky, also named Fred.
And, uh, four-legged Fred.
Four-legged Fred.
Four-legged, you know, two-legged Fred and four-legged Fred.
It's easier that way for Fred if the dog is also Fred?
I guess.
I don't know.
I mean, I don't know.
So, my brother sells these.
He has this big warehouse in El Paso, and they sell, uh, T-shirts.
And, and the guy next to him has another warehouse, and he does something else.
And the guy next to him has a parrot.
And four-legged Fred ate the parrot.
So, I called Fred, and he was all depressed about it.
And I said, um, well, the first thing I wanted to know was what was left.
Because the guy didn't know about it yet.
The guy was gone, see.
He said, there's just a few feathers.
I said, get rid of the feathers, and...
You're clean.
You're clean.
Yeah.
The bird could have flown anywhere on the planet.
Well, see, that was, that's another bad thing, because the guy had clipped his
wings, so...
Oh.
But I said, well, could the parrot talk?
And he said, yeah.
Well, he couldn't say help.
Or, like, down boy.
He couldn't say that.
Yeah.
And then, and then, you know, and, and the dog had been around the parrot for
once,
and had deciduously ignored the parrot.
Right.
And, but that was when two-legged Fred was out.
With four-legged Fred.
Was it two-legged or four-legged that ate the bird?
Now, which...
It was four-legged.
Four, all right, okay.
But, you know, we don't, if the parrot could talk, nobody knows what the parrot
said to the dog
when my brother wasn't around, do we?
No, we don't.
No, it could be like a Menendez brother, Lorena Bobbitt thing, couldn't it?
Taunted the dog.
Absolutely.
I mean, you know, so...
So that's, you know, that's how we're going to...
There's kind of some ugliness there in El Paso.
Hang around if you can, and we'll do a commercial.
We'll be right back here with Mr. Imich.
Okay, Don, it's great to have you here.
Thanks, man.
Please come back, and congratulations.
I understand you're getting married soon.
Yeah, I am.
Well, good luck.
Only a minor problem.
I'm 53, and she's 30.
The other night, we're watching Crossfire, and John Sununu says,
coming up, we're going to talk to the spin doctors.
And she says, why are they on?
I said, no, no, honey, it's not the band.
You have plenty of time to work that out.
Yeah.
Well, good luck to you.
My thanks also to Linda Ronstadt and Brett Butler.
Remember, kids, it's bowling night one more time.
Dick, are you out there again?
I'm not, Eric.
Okay, finish us up, Eric.
Aquarium of cottage cheese, Dave.
Look at the wind.
Man, this is going to be tough.
There we go.
Cottage cheese in an aquarium.
Good morning, Dick.
Thank you very much.
Good night, everybody.
you

What is your impression of the guy, actually?
What's at the center of the man?
What is the core of this guy?
Do you like the guy?
Is he a decent guy?
Does he mean well?
I think he wants to eat and get babes.

And four-legged F
