you're not the first person to write a book about Winston Churchill how how is
my ambition is is yeah but what's good what's different about this book I think
that Churchill is the most important politician my country Britain's ever
produced the most fantastic leader that we've ever produced and he made a huge
difference to the world if he hadn't been there in 1940 if he hadn't resisted
the
overtures from Hitler to do a deal then the world would really have been very
different and far worse and I think that people growing up in my country
nowadays
and perhaps in other countries don't quite understand the full scale of what
he did and his courage in resisting because if he hadn't been there it really
it really would have
been a disaster my impression of England during World War two was there was a
pounding from the
Luftwaffe that lasted a year year and a half something like that there was a
terrible terrible bombing by
and uh and and because of Winston Churchill in my household my father revered
the man and I grew up
believing that it was synonymous Winston Churchill and hero were in fact synonymous
we used to have a
collection of his BBC speeches uh that my dad would would play and he had such
great ad for admiration for
the man and for the British English people well he was a hero I mean I
literally I know that the sad
thing is that there's a there's an insurance firm in Britain called called uh
called Churchill which
has a kind of dog as its as its mascot and many kids growing up in in Britain
today think Churchill is
that dog and uh what part of the objective of the book is to explain not just
the things he did in 1940 but all the
things he did leading up to the war and what made him so extraordinary why he
was so brave was it was
he extraordinary this is the age-old question extraordinary because of the
circumstances or in
and of himself was he extraordinary I think you've got to recognize that he was
just running on a different
kind of fuel from the rest of us he was a he was a one-off and when I was doing
the book I found two
incredible things about about Winston the first is uh how brave he was I mean
physically indescribably
brave the airplane the Orville and Wilbur Wright had invented uh heavier than
air flight uh in in
airplanes about in 1903 they take off from Kitty Hawk ten years later Winston
Churchill is first Lord of
the Admiralty and he's getting up in a plane that he's flying himself he's
crashing repeatedly his
instructors are dying he keeps flying in these machines that are basically made
of rope and canvas
and leather I mean they're they're they're glorified kind of laundry baskets in
the air it's it's just
he's he's he's almost deranged but the other thing that you uh alluded to
earlier but back against
the wall rather than cave yeah he just says all right let's see what you got he
does he's more he
says never never never give in uh did you know Bobby Heenan no I'm sorry um
here's the book right
here ladies and gentlemen it's uh the Churchill factor uh one man how one man
made history Boris
Johnson a pleasure to see you thank you so much good luck thank you thank you
thank you thank you
that's it good night everybody
