my next guest is one of the stars of the movie cocoon he's an actor you've seen
in hundreds of
times or seen him hundreds of times in such films as gorky park 10 semi-tough
and many others please
welcome brian dennehy
hi brian nice to see you how are you good how are you thanks for being here i
appreciate it
well i'm glad to be here especially after those two last acts thank you very
much and those two
guys up in the audience too wow uh now uh is this true people have seen you in
a lot of different
movies and do they come up to you all of the time and say i'm not i think i
know you from
someplace are you or do they know who you are yeah they they all know me as
charlie durning or uh
veteran character actor charles durning yeah i get charlie a lot uh ken mcmillan
you know paul
sorbino so you can see all the recognition they all have out there as long as
they get the name
right on the check you know the worst one i ever heard though i was i was
working on a picture with
robert preston who's a real good friend and a wonderful actor we're in texas
and this woman
came up to bob and she said oh my god i can't believe it i wanted to meet you
all my life you're
my favorite performer you're absolutely wonderful she's wait till i tell my
husband i finally got to
meet richard egan and preston looks at her he says richard egan couldn't even
be robert redford right
well i mean he went nuts it was funny at the time folks it's still funny it's
it's still funny don't
worry let's get that dog back out of here no no uh now tell me about cocoon we
had uh last uh thursday
i believe it was was it thursday thursday we had tawny welch on raquel welch's
daughter yeah lovely
young woman beautiful is she a good actress yeah she's pretty good she's uh she's
very good in the
picture i think now now she didn't care for uh herself in the picture and and i
got the feeling
also she was not nuts about the film so i've heard i i didn't see the show i
was going to bed with my
milk and cookies about 10 30 but uh i understand that uh she was not real happy
with it but you have to
understand it tawny's uh just starting out and and really acting is not what
she's primarily
interested in is that right she acts to pay the bills while she's waiting for
her big break because
what she really wants is to be a waitress
now you have to understand i mean this girl's been waiting for this break now
for two or three years
uh she just had a couple of interviews with arby's but uh didn't work out uh
they have this affirmative
action program now and uh they went with the albino um well see now she didn't
explain that to me
yeah well there's a lot of things you know she had she was she had three
interviews with a couple of
delicatessens in new york but she couldn't pronounce kasha varnishke now uh brian
now now are you mad at
this woman oh no no no i think having fun i'm having a good time okay i mean i
think connie
has got a lot of things going for this girl's beautiful she's lovely she's very
talented she's
a lot better actress than she thinks she she's got a lot of confidence she's
going through a little
phase a little stage a little uh well the thing is this is such a good picture
you know i mean i've
i've made my share of real dogs in my time believe me what's a good one a good
dog oh i can't do that
well think of one and we'll come back to it i made one uh called the attack of
the killer ants
years ago and uh remember that one i played the fire chief i my job was to try
to put the ants out
they flamed it was a real winner folks i'll tell you but uh so and you know
when you go out
have to go out and hustle a picture like that you know it really hurts but this
is a really interesting
funny now what part are you playing cocoon here this is this is aliens coming
from outer space and they
save the old people isn't that the deal it's yeah slightly more complicated
than that david well i
assume there'd be a little more to it no yeah it's uh it's a it's about a group
of old people living
in in saint petersburg and uh struggling you know with with their lives uh
which uh you know the money and
so for the loneliness loneliness and sickness and a group of aliens uh led by
me come down on a mission
now are you do you appear as yourself here's me this alien some for some reason
chose my body to
disguise himself you might think robert redford or uh burt reynolds but
obviously not this guy yeah but
then you don't have foster maybe i don't know but uh uh no it's it's a very it's
and and what happens is
this group of aliens comes to to understand that these people these old people
which we have kind
of discarded in our society have wonderful values and a wonderful emotional
life and uh and are people
of people of real worth and they give them the will to live again that's right
and the sense of
exploration the sense of possibility the sense of potential is there is there
any building of a teen
center in this film do they all pitch in to build a teen center no no teen
centers it's we uh we have some
footage a clip uh from your film amazing do you know what it is brian yes i
think this is the scene
where uh wilfred brimley plays one of the uh one of the another good actor
wonderful character actor
and uh he comes to me to to ask me to use the pool we we're using this pool to
revive at the teen
center there at the geriatric the geriatric center all right and that's what
this scene is all okay so
the cocoons are in the pool they're cocoons and he wants to get in the pool
with them and we don't want
him too okay it's conflict brian dennehy as the alien and uh wilfred
you know i for a minute i didn't recognize you there either because you don't
have the mustache
on and that's you know yeah i'm doing this for a picture here in new york but
how'd you like that
jacket huh very nice that comes from johnny versace's big boy shop
he's got three sizes uh extra large jumbo and mama mia uh-huh johnny versace
big boy shop husky for
huskies for us huskies uh-huh uh how did you like working with uh ronnie howard
ronnie's terrific he's
uh it's funny he's he's he's the one guy i've met in the business who is
exactly the way you
you know you see him on television except for the bondage of course no no i
listen i mean it's no
secret uh it's been going on a long time i mean it all started on the andy griffith
show yeah yeah
can't be you know it's b yeah all right well um
now i'm kidding i'm kidding i'm kidding national inquiry it's just a joke the
movie the movie is
is out and doing very well i'll tell you it had a great first weekend from what
i understand the
business is supposed to be terrific it's a it's a great uh word of mouth it'll
make you laugh it'll
make you cry exactly okay go see it it's really it really is a nice movie and
uh you come back are you
gonna be in new york for a while i'll be here for another couple of weeks i
think oh okay well we're
gonna be on vacation but next time come back yeah we're going on vacation but
when we're back you
can come back for sure all right we got to go away right now too but we'll be
back
okay we're done my thanks to gretchen warden lily tomlin and brian denny good
