6th Anniversary Special on Letterman, February 4, 1988

how are you I'm all right okay we're in three two and okay
they rolling yeah all right David they tell me we're rolling at both ends here
oh both ends are rolling wow that sounds like fun how's that for an opener yeah
anyway David it's
wonderful to be talking with you it's wonderful to be part of your rolling in
even though we're
doing it here not eyeball to eyeball as it were right but the next best thing
don't you believe
yeah you know anyhow technological miracle among other things yeah may I
congratulate you on your
sixth anniversary that's very nice of you thank you very much and no one is
more surprised to
still be here after six years than myself but what about 25 look at Carson how
long he's gone
well see now you've gone and ruined everything for me because I'm sitting here
thinking it's a pretty
neat deal to have been on the air for six years and then you bring uh the that
matter up that Carson's
been around for 25 years and it makes this little accomplishment seem like spit
on the windshield
doesn't it do you see yourself have you ever had someone spit on your
windshield Bobby not recently
yeah well I have a few birds here and there but pretty much a standard
operating procedure
uh David would you see yourself still doing the show in 25 years uh no no
absolutely not I don't know
how Mr. Carson has been able to do it not only do it but he has dominated for
25 years he has he has generated
uh vast sources of revenue for this company and they by the way don't deserve
it these pinheads here
uh and I don't see how he's done it I don't see how he has maintained the
desire to do it
uh and I think that that's an accomplishment that will not be duplicated
last night David you were talking about as to quote you now the cheap squirrels
at NBC
yeah yeah okay and you said that if this special Thursday night doesn't do well
that they're going
to be all over you like a cheap suit that's right that's right and I think that's
probably so if it if
the show doesn't do well in the back of their mind they'll be saying yeah but
we gave him that wonderful
opportunity in prime time and it just turned out to be spit on the windshield
so we'll see
will that upset you well it'll upset me because uh if the show doesn't do well
of course I'll be
upset I'll take it personally and I think everybody who worked so long and hard
not only on that show
but on our daily show will be uh disappointed you know you do something and if
it turns out okay you
want a lot of people to see what you've done and uh we we all worked very hard
as a matter of fact
during the show at Radio City Music Hall I don't know that this has been
announced yet or not but
I collapsed backstage mercy mercy yeah that's how hard can you hear me Bobby
that's how hard I worked
on the production I collapsed backstage well I I'm sorry to hear that I hope
they revived you quickly
I'm fine David they've been telling us in the promo material that you have a
big surprise in store
for us and I'm just wondering I'm just wondering now are you going to bring out
Stevie Nicks after
all this ah well I wish I wish we could bring out Stevie Nicks I would love to
have her on the program
but no uh sad to say Stevie will not be with us on this program but hopefully
in the not too distant
future we can get her into the studio to to sing with our band I'm very fond of
the woman
truly yeah oh yeah I think I think she's a great singer don't you like her yeah
sure I don't think
she's the greatest but she's good well yeah I for some reason I I find her uh I
like her real well
good yeah she's she's uh better now she apparently had some personal problems
in her life and was
gaining weight and so forth but she's better now I understand okay David do you
have to take into
consideration that this in our time zone you'll be on at 8 30. do you have to
take into consideration
that this is a different crowd from those squirrels of us and I'm one of them
who stays up late
well yeah I mean uh you're certainly conscious of that fact going into it and
so things that we feel
might be puzzling to first-time viewers or something that that might not make a
lot of sense which I
guess is what puzzling is uh we we we have taken care to minimize those things
and and in the ones that
are left in the show we try and give as much explanatory material with them as
possible
because we truly we we want this show to be a a nice advertisement for our
nightly show and we
we truly don't want to exclude anybody we don't want them to feel left out so
so anytime there might
be a point of question uh and this was true in picking the clips that we showed
on the program
we tried to keep in mind that a lot of people will probably be seeing this for
the first time
and the last time so we try to make them feel included in things one last thing
David
i want to know when are we going to see your dog bob do stupid pet tricks well
you know bob is is an old
dog at this point he's 14 years old and he's getting kind of fat and his
stomach is kind of saggy
no i'm sorry it's my uncle earl i don't know what happened i just described my
uncle earl to you
uh but uh bob is is his stupid pet tricks are beyond him bob is just content
now to put his face in a big
bowl of wet gray stuff we should start feeding him but he prefers the wet gray
stuff uh so bob is in
retirement now david they're about to pull the plug on us here so okay let me
thank you again for this
opportunity to talk with you and uh to wish you the very very best with the
show so that the cheap
squirrels don't give you a bad time well i appreciate that bobby that's very
sweet of you
thank you very much for your time okay bye-bye bye
late night with david letterman this nbc comedy series is celebrating its sixth
anniversary with
a prime time special tonight the show originates from new york's radio city
music hall featuring some
of the best of letterman i talked with dave and asked him if it's a big deal to
get a stint in prime
time anytime you wander into the dangerous world of prime time television it's
a big deal it's a big
deal for me it's a big deal for everybody on on the staff who has worked with
us for the six years
and nbc has coughed up an awful lot of money for this thing and if it's stiffs
i'm in big trouble big
trouble huh yeah is it going to be highlights from the entire six years or just
from the past year
no it'll be it'll be a mixture of all six years but it won't only be the
highlights from previous shows
but we we we found in looking at the the old stuff some of the stuff that we've
shown every
year on the anniversary show and some stuff that we had not shown every year on
the anniversary show
that the old stuff it tends to look old and and by and large it's not it's not
as satisfying as you
would like it to be so we we tried to include a little of that just to give you
the the feeling
that we've been around the for six years but we we didn't want it to be the the
dominant aspect of the
uh well basically to show us that you've grown you know yeah i'm not sure that's
the term i would
apply to the experience but yeah you know i mean the truth of the matter is you
you're you're proud to
be a part of something that's been on the air for that long you know i mean i i
without sounding like
a complete stoop if it's not too late for that i i think it is an
accomplishment to keep something
in television on the air that long well dave how much of an input do you have
in the comedy
that we see on late night do you have a lot of control no i have no control at
all do you really
think i need the helmet or you just want me to look like a dork i think you
might need it oh okay
but nbc has barred me from all of the meetings so what i do is uh i have my
driver bring me into
town about four i come into the studio about five put on a put on a tie and
have a couple of drinks
and go to work and that's that's it for me uh the rest of the stuff is out of
my hands it's mostly
computer generated stuff i see well if they ever bounce you out of this show
you think you might
want to be carson's replacement if he retires but have you heard something
about me hey no i'm just
going with the rumors okay and you know how rumors are oh i know they get inflated
where there's smoke
there's fire uh-huh well no seriously would you consider being johnny's
replacement if they asked
you well i don't know that's a very difficult question to answer i i don't know
exactly how to
answer that without sounding like a complete uh weasel but uh uh i just don't
know the longer we're
on the air in this time period uh the more the less clear-cut that solution
becomes i i just don't
know what to say to them all right dave they're telling me to wrap but before
we go when you're coming
to rockford when are you coming to rockford we've got we've got a woman that
barks like a dog here
i work with an anchorman who has the reputation of being the longest anchor in
a single market i'm
sure the mayor would throw you a late night parade can we twist your arm monica
hold on
let's go back to the woman who barks like a dog what in what context does that
occur um it's pretty
strange you've got to see it uh uh well i would love huh what no don't leave
they're making me
leave i have no control i'm like you you have the ultimate control monica we've
got the satellite
tied up it's just you and me if you don't want to leave don't leave i don't
want to leave i'm
telling you but you're supposed to be live somewhere don't you know this no no
i would much rather talk
to you than go on to where's the next town biff where we go i don't want to go
to syracuse monica
i want to talk to you thank you dave i really appreciate it come to rockford
and talk to me i'm
serious all right well call me later all right you got it all right bye barks
like a dog eh yeah
i don't know do you think i convinced them we'll find out that's our report
have a great day
tomorrow
from radio city musical where tonight's show is in prime time so you know it's
got to be good it's
the late night with david letterman's sixth anniversary special featuring
highlights from the past six
years plus stupid pet tricks cindy lawper benny king billy joe richard lewis
and paul schaefer with an
all-star band and now america's most beloved television personality you know i'm
not exactly under oath here
david letterman
so
thank you
thank you
thank you very much
thank you very much
let me ask you let me ask you one question is it is it just me or was this
stage seconds ago
filled with fabulous babes
and and i would like to thank i would like uh to thank gary hart for letting us
use his campaign
staff tonight it's so so darn nice of the guys so terribly considerate
folks welcome to uh radio city music hall here in new york city i i think these
these screens are a
nice touch aren't they it's uh see what we've done here we've come into the
most famous theater the
most beautiful theatrical structure in the world and overnight we've turned it
into a lousy drive-in
thank you
my god i just i i had a horrible thought it just flashed through my eyes what
what now if by some strange
happenstance this is actually the beginning of night of a hundred stars
thank you thank you thank you so much you know uh we're on at a different time
tonight we're actually
on in uh what uh people call prime time and if you're looking at my hair and
you're saying to
yourself geez what's the deal on this goofball well you may be puzzled by my
hair but let me remind
you of one things as always ladies and gentlemen my nails are salon perfect
thank you
and i couldn't be happier
this is uh this is our sixth anniversary and i didn't realize this until i got
my gift from our parent
company general electric they own they own ge they own uh nbc and rca and uh i
didn't realize it but
the sixth anniversary gift is a bug light so i terribly touched by that gesture
a bug light boys thank you very much uh let's see we went on the air six years
ago and it's
interesting how many things h
