8th Anniversary Special on Letterman, February 1, 1990

If you saw tonight's David Letterman anniversary special, you know that the
sort of Connecticut resident who has a home in New Canaan is celebrating his 8th
anniversary with NBC.
But as Anne Baldwin found out in an exclusive interview when it comes to
talking with reporters, Letterman isn't very patient, he doesn't like questions
about marriage, and is still sizing up whether he's funny.
David Letterman!
Many of us have spent many late nights with David Letterman.
Over 8 years, we've gotten to know this unusual-looking man with an unusual
sense of humor.
Get set! Get set!
Oh, here we go! Camera races, ladies and gentlemen.
Alright, they're coming down the hallway.
But do we really like this guy? Some do, some don't.
Behind the scenes of the show, he has a reputation for being a tough guy to
work with.
I found out why.
David.
You're paying me back now, aren't you?
David.
Alert the tape machine operators! Here we go!
Alright.
No, I'm still hearing myself.
You know...
Should I just take my ear?
This ain't exactly a shuttle launch, Anne. Let's just go.
And once New York got their problems worked out, we went.
But we're not sure where.
So I started with his anniversary special.
You think it adequately highlighted the eight years that you've been on NBC?
Oh, geez, I don't know.
I mean, we would need several days of non-stop television to adequately
highlight those first eight years.
But I think it was a pretty fair representation, and we had a lot of fun, and
there were no arrests in the audience.
And just when you think you've heard it all, David sitting next to his
production assistant, who for some reason was dressed like an elf, totally lost
it on the question of marriage.
Any wedding plans or anything like that?
That's what I'm interested in, in your social life.
Do you have a social lifer?
Barbara?
Huh?
What do you think?
Well, we'll get back to you on that, Anne.
Alright, so you don't want to talk about that.
Uncross your legs, honey.
You live in New Canaan, Connecticut, right?
Yes, I do.
Okay.
Now, a lot of people that see you down there on the weekends, you know, in the
drugstore buying various items, they say that you're just kind of a normal kind
of guy.
Right.
Is that how you consider yourself?
You think you're pretty normal?
Yeah, yes, I do.
I do.
I mean, but do you know anybody who considers themselves to be abnormal?
Goodbye, kids.
Bye, Dave.
Bye, Anne.
Our neighbor across the hall, David Letterman, is celebrating his eighth
anniversary with a primetime special tonight, 9:30.
And that has kept Dave so busy, I'm told, that he's hardly had a minute for
anything else, even his old buddies.
So, Al Roker, we're heading in search of Dave.
You've seen all the promos, you know what's coming tonight.
David Letterman's eighth anniversary special.
And we wanted to get Dave to come on in to Live at Five and talk about it.
But no, Dave was too busy.
Too busy taking interviews for all around the country via satellite from our
Live at Five studios to come in and talk to us.
Well, let's listen in to see how important this stuff is.
Yeah, he's huge now.
And he keeps, you know, whenever they have one of these diet things, he'll do
like a week-long report on a new diet.
Yeah.
And for the show he's on, they'll put him on the diet, and then they check in
with him every day.
And if anything, the guy's weight has tripled since I've known him.
All right, all right, that's enough.
That's it, that does it.
I'm going to go find Dave, and I'm going to drag an interview out of him if it's
the last thing I do.
No stone unturned.
Do you know where David Letterman is?
David Letterman?
And, uh...
He paid you not to tell us, right?
Okay, and I'm...
Yeah, it's a secret.
Okay, fine, no problem.
Okay.
The guy's influence spreads throughout the building.
We're going to find him.
Biff Henderson is one of the floor directors here on the David Letterman Show.
Biff, did you see Dave anywhere nearby by any chance?
Nope.
You haven't seen him?
No.
I see a conspiracy here.
David was too busy to do an interview with us about the 8th anniversary.
Oh, okay.
You wouldn't know where he is, would you?
Do I know where he is?
No, I don't.
You're lying to me, aren't you?
No, I have no idea where he is.
See, another Letterman stooge covering for him.
I'm not covering him.
You don't know where he is?
I don't know where he is.
You're taking this too seriously, right?
I know I am.
Gene Shallott, we're trying to find David Letterman.
You know, it's his 8th anniversary.
You haven't seen him, have you?
David, I think he's in Gumbel's office.
He's in Gumbel's office?
Yeah.
They've been shaking hands for about 45 minutes now.
And they won't let go of each other.
No one wants to insult the other by being the first to release.
So it would appear that this is as close as I'll get to David Letterman.
But don't worry.
I've got a whole year to plan.
A whole year to figure out how to get to him before his 9th anniversary.
And don't worry.
We will.
I swear it.
We never got him.
No, we didn't.
No, we didn't.
But to make up for it, Dave sent over some nifty stuff for you guys.
Oh.
His anniversary show, it's the 1200th 58th show.
And so he sent over these nifty baseball caps.
And folks ought to look tonight because he says he's not doing a 9th.
There it is.
Okay.
Yeah.
He's trying to buy us off with this cheek.
And t-shirts for both you and Tony.
Look at that.
All right.
12:58.
Okay.
Okay.
All right.
Geez.
All right, Al.
We didn't find them, but we got his shirts.
And they're clean.
Okay.
Tell Dave, thank you very much.
Is that 9:30 tonight?
9:30 tonight.
On Channel 4.
12:58.
Thank you for being with us.
That is Live at 5 for today.
We hope you enjoyed it.
We invite you back tomorrow.
We certainly do.
Good night.
This has been Live at 5 with Sue Simmons and Tony Guida.
Live at 5 is a presentation of WNBC TV.
I'm Don Pardo.
Cheers to film for a live studio audience.
So what do you guys want to watch now?
Well, you know us, Sammy.
We'll watch just about anything.
That's funny.
You can't get the, uh, channel to change.
Stop.
Yeah, that's right, Sammy.
There's probably something okay on this channel.
We'll find out more for 1,800 U.S. bonds.
NBC's regularly scheduled programming has been changed,
and L.A. Law will not be seen tonight.
Stay tuned for David Letterman's 8th anniversary special.
Give it away, Sammy.
Give it away, Sammy.
Give it away, Sammy.
Give it away, Sammy.
Wait a minute, wait a minute.
This will work.
Give me a second.
Oh, come on.
Come on.
From the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles, California,
a very, very and the kind of theater,
it's Late Night with David Letterman's 8th anniversary special.
With highlights from the past eight years.
Stupid human tricks.
Stupid pet tricks.
Paul Schaefer with an all-star band.
And special musical guests, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
And now, my meal ticket for the past eight years, David Letterman!

Yeah! Thank you. Okay.
All right. Thank you. Thank you very much. You know. All right.
Thank you very much. Okay. That's it.
Thank you very much. Okay. That's it. First of all, thank you very much for
showing up here tonight.
And let me say to the folks watching at home, believe me, I am just as upset as
you are that L.A. Law is not on tonight. I'm sorry.
You know, most of the staff came out here from New York City where we do the
show every night. And I did something really dumb. Instead of coming out on a
plane, I said, I'm going to do a little something different.
So I took a subway out here. Now, I know... I know you're saying to yourself, "Bonehead,
is that possible?" Yes. Listen. Here's what you do. You take the F train and
you take that to Queens, to Roosevelt Avenue. And then you get out there and
you just walk west about 60,000 blocks. And here I am. So...
You know, I don't have a lot of show business friends, but since we're in Los
Angeles for the last couple of days, I did something and it was a lot of fun.
So, myself, Roseanne Barr and Cher yesterday, we all went out and got tattoos.
And I...
I have some interesting information from Washington, D.C.
Mayor Marion Barry has announced now that he will not run for re-election.
That's right. However...
However, he is planning the best damn retirement party a mayor ever has.
Oh, you're back there. Did... Did I introduce my friend Paul Schaefer, ladies
and gentlemen? Right back there.
Thank you. Thank you, David. Happy anniversary, baby.
Thank you. Thank you, Paul.
Here's the top ten list.
Ladies and gentlemen, I have here in my right hand tonight's top ten list. Here
we go.
Tonight, the category top ten reasons to continue watching this program. Here
we go.
Number ten.
When you're not watching, we're making fun of you.
Number nine. You never know when I'll come out drunk and slug a cameraman.
Number eight. You can sit there naked. We just don't care.
Number seven. Through a chain of circumstances too complicated to explain,
"If our viewership falls off, little snuggles the fabric softener bear dies."
Number six. If you don't watch, Paul will have to go back to the ice capades.
Who wants that?
Oh, now, come on.
Number five. To keep General Electric executives knee-deep in hookers and gin.
Number four. One of the killers that we profile may be living next door to you.
Number three. The wall is down. Noria Ega is out. Don't stop us now.
Number two. So you can say you were watching the night I was replaced by
Deborah Norville.
And number one.
Because, well, I'm not really very good at this kind of thing, but dammit, I
love you.
Thank you very much.
Let's now begin the program.
You know, people are always coming up to me on the street and they ask the same
question.
They say to me, "Geraldo, what exactly, what kind of things do you do on your
television show there?"
And I usually reply by saying, "Okay, boys, beat 'em senseless."
But the fact is, we have tried all kinds of things on this television program.
So please now sit back, relax, and watch some of these odd moments from the
first eight years.
I do know what can happen when you go out to an industrial site in New Jersey
and drop a 3,000-pound block on a lot of junk.
Andy, I had to call twice. What happened?
I heard the phone ringing, but I didn't get any answer.
I called and the phone was dialed. It was ringing and ringing and ringing.
I got no answer from you.
Okay. Tell those people behind you to keep moving.
All right, you people keep moving.
Hi, Senator.
There's no chance of this little car here dropping off the balloon, is there?
No. It's sewn with heavy, thick cables.
Yeah, but di
