Psychics Collection on Letterman, Part 4 of 4: Various

Thank you very much.
Dorothy Allison is a housewife from New Jersey.
She is also a psychic.
Unlike most psychics in the public eye,
Dorothy does not make a fast buck by doing nightclub acts.
Instead, she works with police departments across the country
locating missing persons, criminals,
and unveiling numerous crime-solving clues
by using her extra-sensory powers.
She has worked on some of the most famous cases of recent history,
including the Patty Hearst case and the Atlanta murders.
Please welcome now, Dorothy Allison.
Dorothy, how are you?
Again, this is a question you're probably sick of,
but we need to find out about this.
How did you first become aware of what you have?
When I was very little, my mother was a psychic.
So when you have somebody that is already psychic,
it isn't too difficult to learn about it or know that you have it.
It takes quite a while to understand it and to interpret the clues.
How old a person were you when you suddenly realized that you had...
When I was 14 is the...
When I first recognized that this wasn't such a good thing to have,
I knew that my father would die and...
That was your very first experience?
That was the first bad experience, I'll say.
And I knew he was going to die.
And then I thought to myself,
she's a psychic.
That's a terrible thing.
What's so good about it if you get feelings like that?
Was it a feeling?
Is that what it is?
Is it just a feeling?
Well, I saw...
No, I saw a crepe on the door.
I knew.
My mother had sent me to the store to get some rolls.
When I was at the store,
I could see him in the bakery window.
I could see the reflection of my father and that he would die.
And he was healthy.
He was only 50 years old at the time.
And all they said was it was a very bad cold that he had.
Now, that's a miserable burden for somebody,
well, somebody, period, but a kid 14 years old.
Now, this perplexes me.
Are you ever free from this?
Is there anything you can do to stop these things?
I am never free because each day,
especially now, the police call
and they make such demands.
I mean, they want everything yesterday.
But I mean when you were growing up from 14 on.
Oh, when I was growing up,
people took advantage of the fact that I had it
and they would ask me.
But I'm talking about what is it like
to actually be inside of you?
I mean, do these things keep...
I didn't like it when I was younger.
And, in fact, it becomes a burden even as of now.
It's a burden.
It's not so nice.
I mean, you may want to like somebody
and then you'll sit by them,
say, gee, this person is so good for me.
And certainly, you don't want to think that.
You know, you try not to think the worst, but you do.
So this is, for you, full-time equipment, more or less.
It just, it comes...
Yes, it does.
It does.
And especially when people learn that you've got it,
then it certainly is full-time, off-time, you name it.
Are there good things that come across with this?
Yes, there are many good things that have happened.
It's not always bad news.
No, no.
Why it is bad now?
Because naturally, I'm working with nothing...
I strictly work with the police, the FBI,
or any kind of police.
So naturally, what am I looking for?
Either a child who was murdered or a murderer.
Yeah.
All right, let's find out how that works.
Say I have a missing relative.
Do I just call you directly, or do you know about it already?
No, no, no.
I can't know about it because I have about 100 cases.
Now I'm going for about 10 cases a week.
So even if I hear anything on the TV, I don't bother with it
because I have enough of my own.
I mean, each day I get a desperate call.
Either children are missing or somebody's murdering somebody.
And there are more urgent calls than others.
In fact, there was a call I received from Texas,
and the man murdered his wife.
He stabbed her through the heart.
And now he threatened to kill his children.
So naturally, this becomes an emergency.
So you have to put your other 10 or 15 emergencies aside.
But I get this every day, every single day.
And again, you actually see these things.
I see, I see.
And as the policeman talks to me, he'll say to me,
well, for instance, to give you an example,
in South Dakota, a whole family was wiped out.
They were shot.
And the very minute the sheriff spoke to me,
I told him who shot the wife and the children.
I knew immediately just on talking to him.
And the thing for me to do is give you something
that the killer doesn't know that I know,
and the police don't know about it at the time.
And he may make just that one,
and they all do make that one little mistake.
And then I tried to tell this to the police.
Right on the phone, I've done it.
I've done this many times by phone,
because I just can't be on a plane all the time,
you know, traveling here and there.
This first started out when you had a vision or a feeling about a person,
a child.
Exactly.
And then you went, I mean, it happened backwards.
You then went to the police department, and they...
That was the very first and the last time I ever went to a police department in
my whole life.
From that day forward, they've been coming to me.
I had this vision and this nightmare of this little boy stuck in a pipe,
and naturally I told the police about it,
and I said he would be found on February 7, 1968.
He was.
So you first started out working, helping to find missing people.
Well, I still do that.
Yeah, but now you're also in Solving the Crime.
Yes.
What happened in Atlanta?
At what point in that investigation were you called in?
Let me tell you, in the very...
No, not in the very beginning.
I was called in October of 1980.
But in 1978 and 79, there were some murders going on in Columbus, Georgia.
The police flew me out there, and I went out there, and then I made a tape.
Again, this is the hardest part for people to understand.
You may ask me about a murder case.
I'll give you the end.
I never give you the beginning.
Who cares?
It's already done.
And they called in this state trooper, George Homer,
and they said, would I make a picture of this man?
You know, he drew it, and I described the killer,
and I said he was Williams, and of course, you know,
I had the tape saying that it's Williams.
I mentioned where he lives.
I mentioned that he was with the television.
You actually identified the housing complex?
Oh, yes, everything.
Everything.
And again, at what point was that into, that long string of tragedies?
People must understand that this was originally the Columbus murder case.
Twelve women were strangled, and I was telling them about Williams ahead of
time.
Oh, this was a different case.
Yes, he was their suspect up until June 22, 1981, when Williams was arrested in
Atlanta.
And now, at that time, it was up to them.
That was originally their composite, their tape.
And they said, in fact, they called me up and told me that they knew that it
was this Williams,
and that they would take care of it and send it off to the Atlanta police.
Which, you know, I tell people about this, but then it's up to them.
I can't tell the police what to do.
Yeah.
This is such grisly work.
Do you, and this is a stupid question, but is there any pleasure in this for
you?
The only pleasure I get is capturing the killers.
Yeah.
That's, I mean, that really, I mean, it's a terrible thing to say.
And what kind of success rate have you had?
Well, I can tell you that I worked on two cases in South Dakota.
They're completed.
They're done with the killers.
The bodies have found everything.
I worked on three cases in Pennsylvania.
And they're identifying a girl now that I told them where the body was a year
ago.
So that makes three already since October.
And then I had another one before that, and I told them who that killer was.
That's four.
Let me see.
Maryland, I got about 14 cases going.
I found the body.
Now they want the killer.
Is it possible for a police department to take advantage of your skills here?
They don't anymore, no.
In the beginning, they used to work me to death.
They didn't care.
They wanted to know everything.
I'm talking about their wives, their kids, their girlfriends, everything.
Now, are you annoying for your friends to be around?
Are they worried about, oh, Dorothy's going to come and tell us about it?
No, because I don't do it that way.
I don't sit and read people every...
I would be exhausted if I did that.
Let me ask you this.
Have you had any odd visions since you've been seated here?
No, not at all.
I liked you right away.
I always liked you.
Oh, thank you.
I have no problem there.
No, some of them I don't like.
No, no, I'm not talking about liking or disliking.
I'm talking about just general...
Feelings about you?
No, not about me, about anything.
Like, is it possible for you to be sitting here talking to me and also working
on one of these Maryland cases?
Yes, I could be sitting right here and...
In fact, I will write it down, what I was getting when I was talking with you.
Yeah, yeah.
That's a fascinating...
I got a state, Charleston, and I don't know why I got that immediately.
I don't know why we were talking about murder cases, but I got Charleston.
Just right here you got Charleston?
Right now.
Hmm.
Could be the big dance contest coming up later.
I would never know about that.
Continued good luck to you.
It's a fascinating story.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Same here.
Thank you.
Dorothy Allison, ladies and gentlemen.
We're going to pause.
We'll be back with Loudon Wainwright III.
Thank you, Dorothy.
Thank you, Paul.
My next guest lectures and practice is phrenology,
and we have invited her here tonight to show us exactly what it is she does.
Please welcome Janet Brennan-Roman.
Janet.
Thank you so much for being here.
What are we going to do?
First of all, what is this?
Is it science, I guess?
Phrenology?
It's a legitimate science.
Legitimate, all right.
Where it started off with people...
It started off the scientific community could prove
that from the bumps on the head and the shape of the head,
certain feelings in your personality,
certain areas of your personality could be proven.
So you can, just by the shape of the head,
be able to give a whole personality description of a person.
Now, how do the bumps and things on your head occur?
Well, it seems that when the brain is in activity,
you use a certain area of your brain a lot.
That would create a bump in the area of which you use your brain the most.
And then other areas, if you're very athletic,
that would show, that would develop that area of the brain for athleticness
or for whatever trait you have, that area would develop,
which would prove that the area of the brain matches the hands,
matches the feet, matches the body.
So someone's hand, someone who may have a certain trait from their hand,
would also have it in their head.
Their head would be the same shape.
Now, are these the bumps we're born with,
or do they develop as you use a certain part of the brain?
And what happens if you, like, I have a bump that, from a kid,
I get hit on the head.
So do you read one of those bumps?
Sure.
Now, what does that mean?
Okay, well, if you're born, if you're a little baby
and you're born with a basic shape, you know, they have a basic shape,
that means even as a baby you can read the head
and you can see pretty much what that baby is going to be like when he grows up.
But it'll change, won't it?
The shape of the head might change?
The baby's basic nature will be the same.
And then as the baby would develop different traits,
that area of the head would develop bumps in that area.
And then if you get a bump as a child,
like that bump had a major effect on your whole life
because that bump would influence a lot of things that happen to you now.
And it's also by not having bumps that have a meaning.
If you have an indent where there should be a bump,
it means that you have certain problems in that area.
So it sounds silly, but years ago they used all the bumps in the head
instead of lie detectors, and that's how it got
