Our next guest recently reunited to record this double album featuring their VH1
Storytellers
performance as well as a greatest hit CD. Please welcome Culture Club.
Take a picture of tonight and keep it by your heart. Love has left us memory,
there's no better way to depart. I will find another lover, someone who won't
bring me down.
Why you tried to level me but you never stood your ground. Fortunately, I got
wise this time. Fortunately, I got me on my mind.
Oh, I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna find you, baby. But I'm much too proud
to say it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to
shout it out.
Take a piece of dignity and use it in your life. Even though you hurt me, I
still want you to survive.
Love was never special. We were never down. You will always have someone to
bring you on the ground.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to say
it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to say
it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to say
it out.

it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to
shout it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to
shout it out.
When you love someone, don't you know? Love is blind.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to say
it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to say
it out.

I'm much too proud to say it out. I'm much too proud to say it out.
I'm much too proud to say it out. I'm much too proud to say it out.
I'm much too proud to say it out. I'm much too proud to say it out.
I'm much too proud to say it out.
I'm much too proud to say it out.
I got me out. I got me out. I got me out. I got me out.
I got me out.
I'm much too proud to say it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. But I'm much too proud to say
it out.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby.
Love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, yeah.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby.
I just wanna be loved. Don't wanna beg you, baby. Love me, love me, love me,
yeah.
- Thank you, Tom. How are you, George? How are you?
- Honey!
- It's been about 15 years. It's Wacky Hat Night here on The Late Show.
We'll be right back to chat with George.
Boy, George. That's a nice hat. That's pretty good looking.
- Nice tie as well. - Thank you very much.
Now, you know, let's just do the chronology on this thing.
I think the last time we chatted, it was 1984, 1985. Is that about right?
- I think my mom was on the show before the last time.
- That's right. We also talked with your mother.
Now, so this means it's like 14 years or something since we've seen you tell
people, tell me,
what happened, where you've been, what you've been doing, your back?
- Not strictly. I haven't been on this show for 14 years,
but I've been to America quite a few times in that space of the years.
- Right. - For the years.
- But it seems like every time you picked up a paper there for a while,
you were either being arrested or passing out or something.
- Well, that's like 12 years ago. You missed a lot of history since then.
- Well, that's what I'm saying. Help me out here. What became of you?
- What have I been doing? Well, I've been making records.
I've toured America four times.
- But my sense of things was you were in a great deal of personal trouble. Is
that true?
- Only for about three years, and the rest has been quite good, really.
I mean, I've been over to America about five times to tour in the last 12 years.
I've had three solo albums out. You've just never asked me back.
- So it's me. I'm the... - It's you. I don't understand.
- You've ruined my career. And now you're about to relaunch me. I love you.
- So all of those bad days with the drugs and the arrests and all of that, that's
ancient.
That's behind us. Way, way behind us. - That's gone. That's 12 years ago.
- So now when you decided you want to get the band, essentially the Culture
Club, back together,
was that easy to do or hard to do?
- It was easy to do because we're British and we don't discuss things.
You know, like there can be a...
You know, in America, you discuss everything.
In England, there can be a rhinoceros in the room and nobody mentions it.
That's just the British way. So we were able to kind of carry on where we left
off,
even though there were hundreds of hideous dramas and ego problems
and fights and relationships and all sorts of things like that. We've just
carried on.
- And how is this experience compared to the original experience?
Like when you're touring now as this original unit, what is that like?
- Well, we can play now. - Ah!
- I mean, you know...
He's gonna get out loads of hideous photographs, by the way.
- Who do you like in your group? Who do you like musically, like from your
country?
Like Elton John and the Rolling Stones? Are you...
Do you people all know one another? Do you hang around together?
- In our big pink house? No, actually, I like a lot of America's house.
I like Marilyn Manson. - Uh-huh.
- And I like things like Radiohead, The Verve, people like that.
- Yeah.
- I liked Courtly Love when she was a bit more sloshy.
Now she's standing to bet middle I've gone off her, but I liked her when she
was grunge.
- Let's take a look at some of these.
Although, you know, these pictures, these are not so, you know,
unlike what you're wearing here tonight, really.
It's actually, it's actually sort of toned down.
- That's an okay picture. There's some really hideous ones coming up.
- Okay.
This is your...
- That's Liz Taylor on acid look.
- Yeah. Linda Tripp-esque.
- That's a really ugly one.
- He wouldn't have an ugly photo of himself on the show. It's really unfair.
- Well, when you're in person and ugly, you don't need ugly photos.
What was going on there, George?
- That's my plastic head look.
- Uh-huh.
- Yeah.
- I look really horrible in that picture. It's actually a good look, but it's a
bad shot.
It's like these evil photographers that come and photograph you from underneath.
Why?
- Mm-hmm.
Do you, uh, uh, have you been following the Monica Lewinsky, President Clinton?
- Well, you can't help but follow it. It's everywhere.
- Yeah, it really is.
- They're obsessed with it.
- Oh, over there, and is it a bigger deal over there as it is here?
- Yeah, it's, everyone's going, you know, all the newspapers and everything,
everyone's obsessed with it.
- But do they care about it? Do they find that it's, I mean, if it happened in
your country, would it be as big a deal there?
- Well, Margaret Thatcher did appalling things when she was in Prime Minister.
I mean, much worse things than, you know, sleeping with people.
And the way I look at it, these women are grown women. They're like 16. Yeah,
they could have said no.
And if President...
I mean, I have to say, if Clinton asked me to sleep with him, I would.
- Roger, really?
- I mean, just to see the Oval Office, you know.
He's got lovely eyes, and he's big, isn't he? He's like six foot or something.
- Just on a...
- And he's the president, I mean, who wouldn't?
- On a scale. On a scale.
- On a scale.
Um, so it is as big a story over there as, but you...
- You don't care. I care about it.
Well, I'm very intrigued by the dress.
- Mm-hmm.
- This whole, you know...
That's the dress that has been hidden now and been examined and so...
- I mean, why would you keep that? Why wouldn't you wash it?
That's so dirty.
- Yeah, that's a thought that came to my mind.
Maybe we'd better tidy this up.
- Maybe belong to Courtney Love or something. I don't know.
It's just keeping a stained dress, I think, is very sick.
Which means that she was obviously plotting to get him.
- Oh, yeah, there you go.
- And I know about that.
- You know about that?
- I know about that because I keep letters from all my old lovers in boxes.
- Really?
- Just in case they ever check me to court and I can pull them out and say,
"But what about this?"
So she was obviously plotting and it's just weird, you know.
And Hillary's quite attractive, I think.
- She seems like a very nice woman. I've met her once or twice.
She seems very, very nice.
And the whole thing is just terribly bizarre.
- I know. I feel sorry for Bill though.
The more kind of...
- You feel sorry for Bill?
- I think the more guilty he looks, the more sexy he looks.
You know, like, because he's turning into this sort of naughty little boy
and that makes him more attractive to me.
- Really?
- Yeah.
- He eats his own, I guess.
So, are you back and up and touring all over the United States now?
- We've been in America for about three weeks.
We've been down south and we did Radio City last week.
- What is the reaction like now?
Is it pretty good when you're out on the road?
- It's been fantastic.
Like, every kind of person, you know.
I mean, in the old days it was lots of girls.
Now it's everyone.
Families, you know.
A lot of queens.
There'll be a lot of queens watching the show tonight, David.
I've upped your quota.
- Well, what about families from queens?
- Lots of families from queens, yes.
- Yeah, true.
Well, is this the newest product right here?
- Well, it's kind of not new because it's old songs, but there's a live album
on there, too.
- Okay, good.
Good enough.
Nice to see you again, George.
Good luck.
Congratulations.
Boy George, we'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
