I'll see you next time.
Now, yesterday was Columbus Day, and as part of our continuing celebration of
this great holiday, we are happy now to present a Columbus Day pageant produced
especially for our show by Mrs. Lerner's fourth-grade class from PS124 in
Brooklyn.
Ladies and gentlemen, a nice welcome now for the young folks from PS124 in
Brooklyn.
This is a proud and exciting day for us in Barcelona.
Christopher Columbus has just returned after a successful voyage to the Indies.
Columbus has come to see the king and queen.
He is accompanied by some of his crew and an Indian from the distant land.
Christopher Columbus, you have brought great honor to our country.
Some of our advisors would like to ask a few questions regarding your voyage.
First of all, do you have any particular difficulties on your voyage?
My greatest difficulty was with my sailors, who became disheartened and fearful.
We sailed for so many days without seeing land.
What did you do?
I tried to cheer them.
I prayed that soon we would reach land.
How long have you been at sea before you sighted land?
We have been gone from Spain more than two months.
Who first sighted land?
We do not know just which man it was.
We do know it was the man on the pinto who sighted land first.
What did you do when you landed?
We fell to our knees.
We thanked God for our saverage.
Then we raised the flag and took possession of the land in the name of Spain.
Did you bring any gold, jewels, or other riches from the new lands?
None, your majesty.
However, I feel sure we will be able to find wealth if you permit us to make a
return voyage.
This will require some serious thought.
Exactly where did you land?
On an island off the mainland.
It was one of many islands, beautiful and fertile.
I would like to return there to look for some ports.
Christopher Coo...
I am most interested in the people you saw on the island.
Were they all like this man?
Yes, your majesty.
They were all copper-skinned.
They lived simply.
They seemed peaceful.
How did you...
But they carry weapons.
These weapons are for hunting rather than war.
How did you communicate?
Have you taught them our own language?
Only a few words.
Sign language are chief means of communication.
I would like permission to ask the crew some questions.
If you were given the opportunity, will you make another voyage?
I am glad I didn't miss this experience.
I never thought we would reach land because the wind seemed so bad.
I would want to sail on a better ship than the Nina next time.
We might get rich if they let us go again.
I am proud and happy to have been a member of the crew.
Your majesty, I beg you to use all your speed in making a decision.
King John will surely send his own expedition now.
I realize we'll start quickly.
Columbus, you will meet with us tomorrow and give us your detailed plans and
estimates of your next voyage.
Columbus, you have brought great honor to our country.
Your name will go down in history.
You have opened a way for new trade.
Today, the eyes of the world are upon you.
May we wish you success on your next voyage.
Christopher Columbus didn't have a compass
Didn't have an engineer as he sailed along
Ocean going breezes
Tore the sail to pieces
Still he reached America
So we sing this song
Hail to Columbus
Didn't have a compass
Sailing merry fast and free
Sailing on the sea
Thank you very much
That was very nice
Let's meet now Mrs. Pam Lerner

Thank you very much
Mrs. Starr Alvarez
Love your act
Welcome back.
As you know, of course, today is George Washington's 250th birthday,
and as a special treat, Mrs. Benjamin's 5th and 6th grade class
will now perform a play in tribute to George Washington
entitled From Little Acorns.
And now from Manhattan, the kids from P.S. 84.
The winter of 1777 at Valley Forge,
20 miles outside Philadelphia,
where the British enemy troops were stationed,
was one of the darkest chapters for the Continental Army
in the American Revolutionary War.
We find General Washington, with his ragtag army
of plain farmer boys and ordinary citizens,
shivering and hungry in the bitter cold.
The soldiers wanted to give up and go home,
but they loved George Washington so much,
they stayed for his sake.
Boy, I wish I had some of my mom's rabbits doing apple pie now.
Yeah, ain't nothing I would give to be wearing one of my sister's
warm linen socks and sweaters.
They're these bloody bags wrapped around my frozen toes.
Yeah, I just wish I was back home in Virginia
with the little woman and her newborn babe
sitting in the sun drinking some nice cool apple cider.
Mmm, mmm.
At ease, man, at ease.
I know you're suffering a great hardship,
and the British troops have red fancy uniforms
and plenty of guns and ammunition.
But we have the spirit and the will
to achieve victory for the 13 colonies on our side.
Yes, sir.
May I speak to you a moment?
Yes.
General, we have over two...
General, we have over 200 men out in the sickness.
No medicine to treat them.
We must get medicine somewhere.
I'm so starving.
I've written a letter to Congress.
I've begged for shoes and blankets
and money for the soldiers' pay.
I myself want no salary for the service of my country.
But they have said nothing.
But don't they care?
Don't worry, lad.
Tell the men I'll stay with them
until I can lead them on to victory.
Yes, sir.
Come on, guys.
I'm going to sleep now.
Dear Martha,
I sit here worrying about my brave young Americans.
Hungry, sick, and cold.
I'm comforted by thoughts of you and the children
safe in Mount Vernon.
And my mind wanders back
to my own peaceful childhood in Virginia.
I remember one day many years ago when...
Oh, good morning, George.
How'd you like to help feed and groom the horses
with me this morning?
Oh, yes, Dad.
I'd love to.
But, Dad, do you think I could ride the gray horse today?
No, son.
You'll have to wait until you're a little bit older.
But I'm not afraid, Dad.
Oh, Augustine, we have such a brave child.
I know he's going to be a great leader, son.
Oh, come now, Mary.
All mothers say that apart their children.
Come, George.
We're working.
Okay, Dad.
Skips, skips, skips.
Good morning.
Good morning, Miss Washington.
Oh, what a lovely cherry tree.
Thank you.
Is George around?
Yes, he's in the stables with his father.
Can we play with him?
Sure, I'll call him.
George, oh, George, your friends have come to play with you.
Oh, hi, George.
Augustine, let's go inside
and let the children play.
I'll be right back, George, to finish our chores.
Have a nice time and stay out of mischief.
Okay, Dad.
Bye.
Let's play hide-and-go-seek.
You're it.
Ready or not, here I come.
George, you better put the act on
or you're going to get in big trouble.
Yeah.
I want to show you how strong I am.
But not with the ass.
Well, you better not tell who did it or else.
No, slow, slow.
No, slow.
No.
Show me back.
Don't worry, Dad.
Don't worry, Dad.
We'll get some fun of this.
Children, come out here.
Children, come out here.
Which one of you did this terrible deed?
This was my wife's favorite cherry tree.
Confess now.
I'll make sure that you're severely punished.
I'm sorry, Mother.
I'm sorry, Mother.
It was I, Father.
I cannot tell a lie.
I alone chopped down the cherry tree,
and I alone should be punished.
Do not punish him, dear.
It took great courage for him to be so honest.
I told you he was special.
He is going to grow up to be a great leader someday.
Mark my words.
Well, maybe you're right this time.
George Washington did grow up to be a very special person.
He did indeed lead the way to independence from the British rule.
In 1789, he was again called upon
to serve his country by the people who loved him,
this time to become the first president of America,
father of our country.
George Washington.
First in war.
First in peace.
And first in the hearts of his countrymen.
Very nice.
You're a nice tree.
This is the fifth and sixth grade class from PS84 right here in Manhattan.
You folks were terrific.
And I want to thank Selma Benjamin,
who was her idea for the play.
Thank you, Selma.
And also Sid Morrison, the principal of PS84.
Our salute to George Washington's birthday, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you, folks.
A wee after applause.
We'll be right back with cartoonist Simon Bond.
Hello, I'm Larry Preston.
Hello, I'm Larry Preston, undersecretary of education.
I'm sure by now you've all heard about the president's change of public
elementary and high school schedules.
If not, let me refresh your memory.
On February 1st, 1982, everywhere in the United States, the American school day
will begin at 12 noon.
That's right, school now begins four hours later.
Now that your children do not have to get up as early,
it is the hope of the president and all of us here at the Department of
Education
that your youngsters take advantage of this new schedule to broaden their
interests,
grow as citizens, and spend a lot more time watching late-night television.
Welcome back to the show.
Even though February is National Tooth Decay Month,
good dental habits are important year-round.
For those of you who missed this play on its limited run,
we're proud to present, from Public School No. 35, Hollis, New York,
The Revolt of the Foolish Molar.
Who are indefendable?
We are, we are.
Who are most dependable?
We are, we are.
Smile, and we shine for you.
We are always there when it's time to shoot.
Who are indefendable, always most dependable.
He's wonderful, he's wonderful, he's wonderful, he's wonderful, he's wonderful.
What a day, that Johnny is really a big eater.
Every time he takes a bite, we as sisters have to go to work, cutting them off.
I'll be glad, I'll be glad to see that good night brushing tonight.
But at least he didn't use us to bite string or open bottom.
That can ruin a tooth for life.
Did you hear Johnny's dad saying he gives his eye teeth for something or other?
I don't know why he can't call us for a right name.
Curse me.
And it really makes me angry to hear people talking about giving something away
and butter, butter, poof, poof.
Five more minutes Johnny, then it's time for bed and don't forget to brush your
teeth.
Who'll be getting brushed if Johnny doesn't forget?
I like getting brushed, I feel so white and shiny.
Not me, I'm a sicker boy, that's so.
What the?
Ah, you know, brush your teeth, go in your deserts and don't eat sweets.
First bad, these will look for you all good.
I know I like teeth.
Yes sir, I'm a real sweet to it, I sure do hate the rules.
I love candy, cake and gong.
Time's up Johnny, time for bed and don't forget to brush your teeth.
Johnny, you can't put that brush again.
Thank goodness that's over, I'm King Roller, Roller, Celery, Candy, Taylor and
I shall sell my love subject.
Apple, milk, celery, carrot, I didn't call for you, I'll call for my love
subject.
We are your loyal subjects, we are your good snack friends.
We making sure I keep you that way.
Sorry, this is the candy world and there's no place for you, so be off.
Apple, milk, celery, candy, candy, candy, candy, candy, candy, candy, candy,
candy.
Oh you are so delicious.
Life, go on, tell me, I said, don't want to be here.
Beware of us, beware of us, beware.
We like to eat the sugar on your team.
We do, don't want to be here.
Beware of us, beware.
Beware of us, beware.
We like to eat the sugar on your team.
We do, don't want to be here.
Beware of us, beware.
Beware of us, beware.
We like to eat the sugar on your team.
We do, don't put them to give us quite a treat.
Punch and punch on your candy and cakes.
But don't be surprised if it starts too late.
Beware of us, beware.
Oh, I feel terrible.
Wake up, wake up.
You're having a nightmare.
You must have been dreaming something really bad.
Oh, thanks goodness it was a treat and I'm as good as ever.
Well, what's up, Annie, about your treat?
Oh, I, Grandpa, was king of the candy world and I ate all kinds of candy.
Then those awful lactobuzz candies and ate the sugar that was left of me and
worse of all
that made a hole in my side.
I didn't know it was that bad.
Maybe we should ask Johnny to stay away from junk food.
Hey, Johnny, can you come here a minute?
What's up?
Johnny, remember the rule.
Johnny, remember the rule.
Johnny, remember the rule.
Johnny, remember the rule.
Johnny, remember the rule.
Johnny, remember the rule.
And we'll be to trouble away.
Try to be only true that's right.
Always rush every day and night.
Try to be only true that's right.
Always rush every day and night.
Try to be only true that's right.
Always rush every day and night.

Thank you very much.
These are the third graders from Janice Stone's class.
We would like to thank her.
Also, Carol Batista, the music teacher.
And Mr. Penske, the principal of PS35.
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
And the cast album will be available in the lobby after the show.
We'll be right back with Leo DeRoche.
Very nice.
Our next guests are fourth and fifth graders from Public School 107 in Brooklyn,
who, as
part of a project with the Metropolitan Opera, have written, produced, and
performed
an opera called "Different Worlds with Different People."
Tonight, here with some selections, please welcome Jason Smith, Martin Wong, Joaquin
Cabrera,
Elizabeth Donahue, and Miriam Rotken-Ellman.
Minion, you have to clean my room, and that's an order.
Minion, do my spelling homework, because I said so.
Minion, do my social studies, do as I say, not as I do.
Minion, you have to do my math, it's long division.
I'm not asking you, I'm telling you.
Minion, do my history.
Yes, you have to.
Don't talk back to me.
I'm the boss, can give all the orders I want.
All these slaves, they work for me.
I give them orders, and they obey.
Larry, you do the test.
No, no, not the test!
The test!
The test!
The test!
The test!
Now, the report card!
Yay!
As I read the final chapter, over the last of dim lamplight.
When the last pencil is heard scraping over this last page of paper, then this
music will part, and my world and its essence will disappear.
Our fantasies will last a lifetime.
Very nice!
Very nice!
Very nice!
Very nice!
Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Are you Joaquin?
Yes, sir.
Nice to see you.
Very nice job!
I tell you what, Joaquin, we have a couple of seconds left.
Introduce everybody, and we'll get to the accompanist, and then we'll talk a
little bit about this.
You're Joaquin Cabrera.
Yes.
All right.
This is Elizabeth Donahue.
Hi, Elizabeth, nice job.
Martin Wong.
Martin.
Miriam Rockin-Elman.
Miriam, nice to see you.
Jason Smith.
Jason.
And Michael Tierney, who is our stage manager.
Nice job, sir.
And the young lady playing the piano.
That is Emily Gibson.
Emily Gibson.
And you're not in the school with the kids, right?
No.
I'm the composer.
Oh, you're the composer of this piece.
All right.
And how are we doing?
What did we see here?
What exactly was the story?
This is, what are we talking about here?
Well, I think you should ask Miriam.
Okay, Miriam.
What are we seeing here?
You helped write the piece?
Yes.
And what is it telling us?
What do we learn from this?
That everybody has a different world inside them, and that was just Larry's.
own imaginary world and what happened in it.
Uh-huh.
And we have to put aside our own petty differences and live as one.
Maybe not.
We'll be right back.
All right.
Well.
As if this show needed any more holiday magic, we now have a special
Thanksgiving presentation
by the Miss Mitchell's kindergarteners and first graders from PS 59 right here
in Manhattan.
Now, ladies and gentlemen, please say hello to Miss Mitchell's class, kids.
Thanksgiving then.
Over 350 years ago, we sailed from England with our parents on the good ship
Mayflower.
We crossed the Atlantic Ocean to the new land of America.
We were thankful to be in this new land.
When it was time to give thanks, we decided to have a great feast.
We invited our Indian friends.
For three days, everyone ate, danced, sang and played games.
One, two, three.
Now you know why we are here.
We come to spread Thanksgiving cheer.
Each of us in a special way comes to give our dance today.
We hope that you will do it too.
Be thankful for what makes you cute.
Very nice.
Thank you very much.
Thank you, everybody, and have a happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you for being here.
Nice to see you.
And we'll be right back, folks.
Happy Thanksgiving.
We're done?
That's it.
Bye-bye.
Okay, bye-bye.
Thank you.
And now, folks, to close out our program tonight
and bring in the holiday season,
here are the four-year-olds
from the Chinatown Head Start program in New York
with a selection from their annual Christmas pageant.
Kids?
Just hear those sleigh bells jingling
ring, ting, ting
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you
Outside the snow is fun
and friends are following you
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up, let's go
Let's go
Let's look at the show
Let's look at the show
We're riding in a wonderland of snow
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up
It's grand, just holding your hand
We're riding along with a song
of a wintery fairy land
Our chicks are nice and lovely
Thank you.

Beware of us,
