Nanci Griffith Collection on Letterman, 1988-2005

You all set?
You ready?
Yes.
Okay.
Our next guest is a lovely and talented singer and songwriter whose latest
album is called
Little Love Affairs.
Folks, please welcome Nancy Griffith.
And from a distance, the world looks blue and green and the snow can't have
tears white.
And from a distance, the ocean meets a sting and the eagle takes to fly.
From a distance, there is harmony and it echoes through the land.
And it's the voice of hope.
It's the voice of grace.
It's the voice of every man.
From a distance, we hold heavy down, and no one in us can be.
And there are no gods, no moms, no diseases, there's no hungry mouths to feed.
From a distance, we are instruments, and we're marching in a common name.
Playing the songs of hope, playing the songs of peace, they're the songs of
faith.
God is watching us. God is watching us. God is watching us. From a distance.
From a distance you look like my friend.
Even though we are at war. From a distance I can comprehend what all this war
is for.
From a distance there is harmony. And it echoes through the air.
And it's the love of love. It's the hope of hope. It's the heart of every man.
And it's the love of hope. It's the hope of hope. And this is a song of every
man.
Beautiful. Terrific. Thank you very much for being here. Nancy Griffith. We'll
be right back.
We'll be right back, kid.
Thank you.
All right. Thank you.
Well, you have to come on the program. Professor Amos will be here with his
miracle solvents.
And also, who am I overlooking? Nancy Griffith is right here now, as a matter
of fact.
Tomorrow on the program, tennis star Chris Everett will be joining us right
here on this program.
Chris Everett. And Morty, you tell me that this is the only television
appearance she'll ever do again?
No, no, no, no. Huh? No. That's what you said. This is the only time you'll
ever see Chris Everett on television again.
No. This will be it tomorrow night.
So it'll be her big farewell to television tomorrow night, right here on the
show.
Also, host of remote control, Ken Ober will be joining us.
And it may be his only appearance on television as well.
Man, the Hindenburg is looking for a place to dock.
That fly is about the size of the bat that stung me the other day.
And Edgar Winter. That'll be on the program tomorrow.
Our next guest, a distinctive writer and performer whose new album is entitled
Storms.
I have a copy of it right here.
One of the most highly regarded singer-songwriters of today, says the New York
Times.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back to the program, Nancy Griffith.
My sister had a crystal boy. She played a silver tone from Montgomery Ward.
She could buy us songs in Monroe hair. She sure could turn a boy's head to
stare.
Swimwear, saunter tan, and haunt them was all she learned in school.
Books were for the other girls, and the other girls were fools.
Texas back in '69. It was driving the movies in dashboard at night.
Father walks her down near a hill. Thus college didn't suit her style.
Sad truth was she could barely read. But if you told dear father, well, he
wouldn't believe you.
Telephone rang and rolled "mother insane" when my heart slept on the shelf.
Sister's gone and she won't be home 'cause she didn't take care of herself.
Texas back in '69. It was driving the movies in dashboard at night.
Where is she now? She's a backseat queen of eternity.
Where is she now? She's heavy of flying like dawn and take her teeth.
Someone should have told her that beauty's all you offer.
How soon the world discovers that the beauty's gone.
And it's gone.
Mother, can't you hear your doctor crying?
Father, wake up her young this time.
The kids are grown when her husband's gone away.
And it's a shame 'cause she had such a lovely face.
Can't you see she needed more than, oh, what a pretty child.
You never taught her a tooth bomb lie. All you told her was the smile.
Texas back in '69. It was driving the movies in dashboard at night.
How soon the world discovers that the beauty's gone.
And it's gone.
And it's gone.
Texas back in '69. It was driving the movies in dashboard.
And it's gone.
And it's gone.
For the other she's like dawn integrity. Someone should have told her when
beauty's all you offer. How soon the world discovers that beauty's gone. And it's
gone. Texas back in 69 it was driving the movies and dashboard lights.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
Hi there.
Our next guest is a particular favorite around here.
Right here, ladies and gentlemen, is a copy of her current album.
As you can see, it's entitled Storms.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, singing a song that she and I co-wrote.
Please welcome Nancy Griffith.
And what have you got to say for yourself now, baby?
Now that I am leaving you, what have you got to lose?
The truth you tried to keep for me, well, it nearly drove me crazy.
I have grown weary with sleepless nights of you.
Set a broken heart in the corner of the line.
It's something to remind you.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
There are those who can't love right, I just can't love wrong.
When you're lonely in the night, I hope you will recall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
No, I will not forgive you for betraying trust between us.
Though I will always care for you, I've loved you had my life.
And when I give my heart again, I know the love we may have.
Love is but ain't fragile flame, and trust just fuels the fire.
When I think of all the years your love has taken from me,
I can't believe I'm leaving, and I'm gone.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
There are those who can't love right, I just can't love wrong.
When you're lonely in the night, now I hope you will recall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
There are those who can't love right, I just can't love wrong.
When you're lonely in the night, now I hope you will recall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
You made this love a teardrop, waiting to fall.
Well, you certainly do write nice songs.
Thank you.
How have you been?
I've been great, taking a year off from the road and just having a great time.
So this is the first time in a long while you've not been on the road, is what
you're saying?
Yeah, we had this never-ending tour that started in 1986, and it finished at
Christmas 1989.
Oh man, so almost three years on the road you were.
Yeah.
All over the world.
All over the world.
And quickly, impressions of the best and worst parts of the tour.
Well, the best parts were Scotland, Amsterdam, Ireland.
Do the people there just go crazy for you?
Yeah, they're wonderful.
They're great.
Yeah.
That's interesting that they, you being from Texas, and then you go over there
and they
really take a liking to your music.
I know.
Isn't that culturally kind of neat?
I think it's the beer.
The Texans and Irish and Scottish, they really like their beer.
Yeah.
You know?
And what are you up to now?
Well, right now, I've got a couple of television specials coming up.
What kind of stuff?
The American Music Shop, which is a show that I did with Guy Clark and James
McMurtry, and that
airs next week.
Was James McMurtry on this show?
Yeah.
Thank you very much.
Yeah.
Great writer.
Yeah.
And that airs when, I'm sorry?
Next Saturday.
Okay.
And another one?
Oh, great.
Oh, great.
And I'm also involved.
We have this chaotic gubernatorial race going on in Texas right now, so I'm
very involved
with Ann Richards' campaign for governor.
Well, good for you.
Yeah.
They ask you to step in and settle that mess.
Yeah.
Well, I hope I can settle it.
It's a pleasure to see you again.
Thank you very much.
Nice to meet you.
Your music is just terrific.
Thank you.
Nancy Griffith, kids.
And we'll be back with Professor Amos.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Well, does that mean everything is 4.6 billion years old?
Oh.
I'm listening to sports talk radio now.
Our next guest made her TV debut right here on this program, a fact of which we're
quite
proud.
She has just finished a brand new album, which will be out in September.
And in the meantime, she's here again tonight.
Ladies and gentlemen, please say hello to Nancy Griffith.
Oh, Nancy.
The telephone is ringing in the middle of the night and I'm cold, the bed
closed fire.
Don't stop falling out if I turn on the light.
I'm afraid of these shadows here 'cause my past is truly frightening.
And I'm afraid of the warmth and the down of your feathered heart inside.
It's just another morning here.
It's morning.
It's just another morning here.
It's just another morning here.
It's morning.
And it's a miracle when it comes around every day.
Oh, the neighbors scream and their baby cries and I'm hiding in a corner.
Oh, I won't feed them, pray I won't feed them one day.
Oh, maybe it's just the breath of August so hot upon my shoulder.
Or an open window for winging heart to fly away.
It's just another morning here.
It's morning.
It's just another morning here.
It's just another morning here.
It's just another morning here.
It's morning.
It's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
The telephone is ringing in the middle of the night of the night.
Oh, the big close eye.
Oh, the big close eye.
Will I stop calling out if I turn on the light?
Cause I'm afraid of these shadows here as my past is truly bright.
And I'm afraid of the warmth and the down of a feathered hearted soul.
It's just another morning here.
It's morning.
It's just another morning here.
It's just another morning here.
It's just another morning here.
It's morning.
It's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
And it's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
And it's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
And it's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
And it's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
And it's a miracle when it comes around every day and the year.
Thank you.
Thank you.
How are you?
Thank you for being here.
Have a seat.
Have a seat.
Thank you.
Welcome back to the pool room.
How are you doing?
I'm doing fine.
You know, you're the best.
You're just the best.
And we're lucky to have you here for a few minutes tonight.
Oh, it's a real pleasure to be here.
Are you saying that for real?
Are you just making something up?
Oh, no.
This is a pleasure for you?
It is, truly.
Even tonight, really?
Oh, yeah.
Because I get to play with Will Lee and Paul Schafer and Sid and Andrew.
I mean, it's just great to be here.
Yeah, Anton, of course.
Don't forget Anton.
I didn't.
I said Anton.
You just didn't hear me.
I know.
Now, people now are telling me that you spend, you have a home now in Ireland.
You live part of your year in Ireland.
Right.
How did this come about?
When did this happen?
And are you enjoying it?
Any one of those questions.
Go ahead.
Yes, I love it there.
I mean, it's a magical place.
You know, it's a place where there's so much music and the people are so nice
and nobody's
in a hurry to get anything done.
It's kind of a place where there's no expectations to do anything on time,
which is good for me.
Yeah.
It sounds a lot like GE.
Yeah.
But they must love you.
And are they familiar, completely familiar with your music over there?
Yeah.
That's my biggest market, if you would call it.
I have more fans in Ireland probably than any place in the world.
Is that right?
Geez, I would not ha
