The New York Times
Beginning on Monday, July 5,
my next two guests will be the hosts of the new NBC News Overnight program,
which will follow this program on most NBC stations.
Please welcome Lloyd Dobbins and Linda Ellerbee.
Thank you very much for being here.
This program follows us, but as people of course know,
this is taped in the early evening.
You're actually doing this one live, aren't you?
They won't let us do it the way you do.
Yeah, now what does that do to the schedule of a human being?
Everything. I mean, it destroys it.
So what time will you show up and what time do you go home?
We'll get here about now, uh-huh, and go home when they let us.
Uh-huh.
And which you think will be when?
Three.
This doesn't matter to a dedicated journalist, you understand.
Doesn't bother you at all, no.
Now you must, I'm guessing, I know both of you have families.
Are they planning on just leaving, or...?
Actually, they left some years ago.
We thought maybe they'd come back now.
Uh, what sort of things?
It's hard for me to believe that this program
doesn't cover most of the important issues...
...and in depth.
We agree.
Uh, so what is there left for you folks to deal with?
Well, just sitting back there, we were starting work on a feature that will be
very serious.
Uh, we thought of doing a cover story on cucumbers.
Mm-hmm.
That's good.
Uh-huh.
Hi, Ruben.
Uh...
Struck me as a great idea.
Yeah.
Post-class.
Yeah.
Uh...
This is the first time we've worked together, and I don't know who he is.
Now, that, let's, uh...
You have worked together before.
Tell us about the project, which was called Weekend.
Yeah, it was when they took Weekend, which is a nice little late-night program,
and made it a prime-time program.
Mm-hmm.
And, uh, they sent Linda up to hold my hand, which I thought was very nice of
them.
And your program, how long was it on the air?
After I got on the show?
Well, in total?
Four and a half years.
Well, that's a success.
They didn't think so.
Oh.
And by they, you mean...?
Fred Silverman.
Oh, oh.
My favorite person.
And, uh, let's just move on, shall we?
He felt like a day.
Uh, and then it was replaced by, as I recall, Saturday Night Live, right?
No, we were on the air for a year, and then Saturday Night Live came on the
second year
that we were on.
So the show had run a year.
They came on.
They ran.
They're still running.
They're still on.
We moved to prime time.
We were replaced by Tom Snyder.
Uh-huh.
He was replaced by David Brinkley.
David Brinkley, who was replaced by the rest of the NBC News Department, and
now it's
our turn, again, to do something.
Yeah.
So it's interesting.
For a change, we have three people here working for this network who actually
have shows.
Yeah.
Right now.
Yeah.
Well, that's exciting and encouraging.
Now, in addition to the cucumber mentioned, what sort of things will you be
doing?
Carrots.
Got a great idea on Dill Pickles that you are not.
Whoa.
Yeah.
Now, who do you suppose will make up this viewing audience?
We thought you could tell us.
Well, I am positive we will have all the East Coast bookies looking for the
late West Coast
scores.
Mm-hmm.
So that's ten right there.
Mm-hmm.
Not one in my family.
How about yours?
Oh, sure.
We will be watching.
I have found that in this particular time period, generally across the country,
we are, what,
1230 to 130?
We are the smartest, most intellectual, best-looking humans.
Who all go to bed at exactly 1.30 on the dot when you go away?
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
These people, I find, are starved for information because, of course, they have
no jobs.
So they can just stay up all night long.
No problem.
A group we may soon join if it keeps going like this.
Now, this is a very interesting, this is the first network, is this the first
time network
programming has gone this late?
Yes.
So far as I know, and I think eventually they'll go all night.
Uh-huh.
I hope they go all night with someone else and give us a better job as a
compliment.
Now, this is not going to be just a repeat of the 6 o'clock news with the...
No, not at all.
You couldn't do that.
Yeah.
If you did that at 1.30 in the morning, you'd bore them to death in the first
three minutes.
So you can have a band?
Uh, we want to call it.
I was just thinking of singing the news.
A studio audience, request, request line, story you didn't see three years ago,
if you'd
like to see that over.
So people call in for old news?
Sure.
Oh, that's good.
I like this.
I think you have a hit on your hands here.
This program will begin July 5th.
And it's called NBC News Overnight.
Yes.
With Lloyd Dobbins and Linda Ellerbee.
I'm Dobbins.
This is Mr. Dobbins, Ms. Ellerbee.
And thank you very much.
Good luck to you with your program.
It sounds like a wonderful idea.
We'll be back.
We're nearly done here, folks.
Here at Late Night, we encourage all members of our staff to express themselves
artistically.
And tonight, we're happy to present a short videotape by Lynn, our late night
staff receptionist.
Watch closely, won't you?
Late night, please hold.
Late night, please hold.
I want to talk to your boss.
He's not in right now.
Don't give me that.
I know he's here.
This is his baby, and he's going to take responsibility for it.
I know he can afford it, too, because monitor's doing very well.
You're looking for Lloyd Dobbins next door.
Oh, sorry.
People Magazine.
Hi.
I'm doing your people puzzle.
Could you give me a hint?
Is Debra Winger diagonal?
Okay.
Hi.
You owe me some money.
Late night, please hold.
I'm looking for Lloyd Dobbins.
Next door.
Let's see, Larry.
14 lines.
You got six right.
Congratulations.
Looks like all those lessons are finally paying off.
It's late night?
Yeah, that's right.
Is it raining outside?
Yeah.
I don't mind.
At least you don't have to shovel it, mate.
Did you make that up?
Yeah.
You want to be a writer?
Back there.
Oh, my God.
Next door.
Excuse me.
I think one of these quarters is counterfeit.
I hope I could take.
Lots of coins.
But the same date, Larry.
Oh, excuse me.
I'd like to be on your show tonight.
What do you do?
Well, I wear this hat.
It's like an antenna hat.
See?
People love it.
Look, you can't be on the show tonight just because you wear a stupid hat.
I mean, you've got to be realistic.
How about next Thursday?
Is that good for you?
Yeah.
Thursday's good.
I'll wait.
Thank you.
Excuse me.
Is this the last one?
Yeah.
Hi.
Any phone calls?
David?
No.
David, I'm sorry.
I'm in a little trouble.
I need a favor.
Can I hide in the office?
Hide in the office.
Yeah.
Well, you know, I don't mind this, but there are ways these things can be
prevented.
Good heavens, you're an adult.
We'll be right back, folks.
John Waters is here, so come on back.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
