Allen Ludden and Betty White with David Letterman, 1978-2012

I'm glad you're with us you are here with us and with when I say us I mean
three of my favorite
funny people and then my favorite lady in the whole world now that's nice and
she's she's funny
but she's also my favorite lady but this young man here this innocent-looking
young man this this
this childlike creature that I first met when I was in Indianapolis visiting a
radio station years
and years ago in Indianapolis not too long ago no it was about 74 you talk
about your days in
Indianapolis well of course my mom we all know about her in Indianapolis is the
only licensed
topless barber in that city and of course that's pretty much what put it on the
map yeah I see I
see that's it all right Benny uh when did I first meet you I don't remember I
don't I love most
about you you know I'm always trying to think of what it is I love about you
yeah I think and I
think what did you think it's your your your illusion of the first time when
you come bursting
through that door and you're so surprised to find all of us here what did you
think we'd be
I thought you'd be here I just was glad oh well I'm glad to be where did I
first meet you
hello hello what's your name I'm Dave you're Dave Dave Letterman I gotta tell
you Fred this is a very
exciting week for me because this fella here happens to be one of my favorite
people in this whole
business you see and I really feel a little not responsible for his success but
I saw him before a lot of people saw him didn't I David
I've never seen this man before in my life I saw this guy as a radio m as a
disc jockey or a telephone talk
show guy in Indianapolis Indiana that's right years ago you had a beard I did
have a beard I still have
the beard it's out in the car I'll get a little later you were fat no I what do
you mean I was
you were bigger that yeah I was bigger yeah yes anyway he was in Indianapolis
and he was good then
he just gets better as years go on pretty soon he's gonna be really good
good morning and welcome to the show my name is David Letterman you know before
this television
program actually begins I just like to take a minute or two to share something
very special with
you that's something special is two words Alan Ludden for years now Alan Ludden
has been a mainstay for
millions of television viewers just like yourselves Alan has charmed us on
college bowl liars club
password and currently password plus other stops along the way were stumpers
and my personal favorite
sentimental you it's no secret that the man has long been identified with
quality television program
entertainment however there is another side to Alan Ludden Alan Ludden the
recording star
on this masterpiece
on this masterpiece Alan sings it all for me some of the selections of course
the Rolling Stones big hit
satisfaction
surfer girl and of course side to the Chuck Berry medley
I thought a fine way to start our day here together would be with Alan singing
a selection from your password is
entertainment ladies and gentlemen here now Alan Ludden singing call me
irresponsible
all me irresponsible all me
uh yes dancing has broken out here in the studio ladies and gentlemen this is
just a sample of the remarkable work contained on Alan Ludden's album your

won't you
thank you thank you thank you all know my next guest is the host of the
television show password plus but what you don't know is that he's also a
singing star a recording star please welcome mr alan Ludden
you're looking you're looking very well very fit you clean up very nicely thank
you very much you
know we uh about the third day i think you're putting me on no no no i have a
don't you have
a feeling that this is a put on that that that he's really making sport of my
ability as a singer
no no i think you are yes i do don't you don't i have you heard have you heard
the jokes he made
about my album which i did very seriously it wasn't a joke when i did it let me
explain something here
with the third day of the show yes we played i saw your album yeah and nobody
take it oh that's right
but somebody did take it is the problem we no longer have the album it was so
highly thought of
uh that it is now actually i gave it to a gentleman i said here you go hold
this he misunderstood me
and he took it home and is now in the privacy of his own home let's hope
enjoying enjoying
now see it's just one of those no no no yeah yeah but you see when they called
um when they call i knew
that that you were going to make light of my abilities as a singer but and i
and so i said i
don't want to sing you should have heard the panic in the girl's voice really
she said oh well i said
no i don't want to sing because he'll just make fun of me and i said no i don't
want to well the whole
the whole thing was about alan ludden singer you didn't ask me here to talk so
i came with a cause
oh you have a cause i have a call i'll accept a call you know betty is very
involved in endangered
species i am too i'm involved in an endangered species which i think is
critical i really do are
you interested yes i am i am i am i can't i can't see the interest in you i'm
interested i have known
that this boy is kind of like my son i really feel very very deeply involved
with you david i'm
i work for your success and pray for well now that's what i wanted to mention
never mind i want
to talk about my call now listen look closely in my eye are you there yes all
right uh my and i have
a nature species which you should get concerned with and i don't think your
heart's really in it so i've
got to persuade you to all right uh the endangered species is the saloon player
the piano bar saloon
player singer they're fading away fast they're going away there are no new ones
coming up and i don't
think you're helping because here's the thing there are a lot of young people
around who don't know
all the great lyrics that people now for instance in new york right now i would
say there's there's
of course there's bobby short at the regency but then there's i think the
premiere song piano player
singer is a man named charles de forest over ted hook's backstage ted hook
should be paid by the
historical society because he's retaining something that's very important charles
de forest knows
every lyric he knows all the good songs he knows and he sings them well then
there's then i was down
at village uh village green last night a good man down there's written a lot of
good things knows
all the good words um murray grand he's fine i recommend him to you so this is
what you're saying
is this is an era or uh this is an era that may be slipping yeah they're gonna
you're losing you're
losing all the you know nobody's coming up learning do you know these guys
frank yes yes he knows a lot
more than i think you've allowed him to show let me let me let me compare a
couple now here's a lyric
written by ira gershwin for a song called isn't it a pity which is one of the
best gershwin songs
it goes isn't it a funny thing i look at you i get a thrill i never knew isn't
it a pity we never met
before here we are at last it's like a dream the two of us a perfect team isn't
it a pity we've never met
before imagine all the lonely years we've wasted you with the neighbors i was
silly labors what joys
untasted my nights were sour spent with schopenhauer you don't hear lines like
that let's forget the past
let's both agree that i'm for you and you're for me and isn't it such a pity
that we've never met
before now here's a big hit by linda ronstadt written by teddy now let me just
caution you here
we we're we have a time problem we do want you to sing so i'm going to i got it
okay well do whatever
you want you came you came all the way in here for that i prepared this here's
the lyric that the kind
of young people are that are learning now this is the sort of thing you'd hear
in a piano bar if this is
what you hear people say you've been making out okay she's in love don't stand
in her way but let
me tell you that it hurts so bad it makes me feel so bad it's going to hurt so
bad if you walk away
like needles and pins explain that one i don't understand if you walk away like
needles a pin
why don't you stay and let her make it up to you stay i'll do anything you want
me to you love me before
please love me again you i can't let you go back to him please don't go please
don't go it hurts so bad
come back it hurts so bad don't make it hurt so bad i'm begging you please
please please don't go
please don't go please don't go all right now that's those are the great new
lyrics that's why we have
these telethons ladies and gentlemen to keep those contributions coming in to
save the let's save the
piano player the saloon singer with that you're going to favor us what are you
singing what is this
you're going to tell us alan ludden ladies and gentlemen david david david you
hear this this is
your frank owens you hear how he can play this pretty music he doesn't play
that rock and roll stuff this
time of the morning he played he can play pretty music let him listen he's got
he's got talents that
have not been exploited this is a song by george gershwin lyrics by ira gershwin
i could cry salty tears where have i been
all these years
tell me now how long has this been going on
there were chills up my spine and some thrills i can't define listen sweet i
repeat how long has this been going on
oh i feel that i could melt
into heaven
into heaven i'm hurled
now i know how columbus felt
finding a brand new world
kiss me
kiss me once
kiss me once
then once more
what a dunce
i was
before
what a break
for heaven's sake
how long has this been
going on
when
when
into
my arms
you creep
our
divine
rendezvous
don't wake me
if i'm asleep
let me
dream
it's true
how i
spin
how i reel
you
you
are
my

we
are
going to
take
some
time
to talk
with
Mr.
Ludden
now
and
this is going to sound sappy and like your typical showbiz story but actually
it's not
when i first moved to los angeles you and your wife betty were very kind to me
and were responsible for most of my employment about four or five years ago
can i tell them the truth i mean i don't know we were responsible but i met
this young man first in indianapolis indiana when he was doing the best radio
interview talk show in indianapolis
i went back to los angeles
i went back to los angeles remembering the guy his name and everything he had a
beard then he was a little heavier you were a lot heavier i was a lot heavier
about 360 yeah anyway from that moment on i knew he was going to be a star
because he is in fact one of the funniest minds and one of the nicest guys in
this whole business
well let's talk about you now this is what i remember from talking to you in
indianapolis you were always associated with college bowl yeah tell the people
how long college bowl was on the air and how long you were associated with it
well i started on radio i was on radio with it in 53 we started the format
grant thinker and i then it went on television in 58 and i was on it 58 half a
season 59 60 61
and then 61 62 and then i went off in 62 and i think the show was on the air
until uh 70 or 69 it got through the 60s it suffered by the by the uh denigrated
image of colleges during the 60s but uh it stayed on the air a long time and a
man named robert earl
oh that's right robert earl took it over i left in 50 the season of 63
no i left the season of 62 the spring of 62 i n
