Chris Elliott's Friday Night Videos Collection, 1987-88

Join Chris Elliott Friday for the wild and wacky in the world of Friday night
videos.
Yes!
And I give it the thumbs up with the okay.
It's the Chris Elliott special starring Mr. Chris Elliott.
And now, here he is, Chris Elliott.
Thank you very much, and welcome to my very first network special.
Thank you.
Let me explain what's going on here.
You know, for the last five years, I've been putting in my dues as a writer and
performer on a little show called Late Night with David Letterman.
Well, it's on very late.
At any rate, tonight, the network has seen fit to give me my own 90 minutes to
do with whatever I want to do.
And I'm going to have a lot of fun.
I have a lot of things planned.
There is one problem, though.
It seems that this month, there was kind of a programming glut at NBC.
Too many shows.
So what I have to do is share some of my 90 minutes with something called
Friday Night Videos.
I don't really know what it is.
I think it's like MTV.
Oh, come on.
It'll be fine.
There's no big deal.
I just have to show some rock music videos and talk to some rock stars or
something like that.
You know, doing one show on top of another show is done all the time on the
network.
It's called Piggybacking.
One of Brandon Tartikoff's ideas.
Okay.
But everything will be fine.
And let's get my special started tonight.
You know, tonight I'm going to do something I've always wanted to do on
television because it is my special.
But I've never had the chance to.
Tonight, I'm going to show everyone here just how easy it is to paint in
watercolor.
I knew you'd like that.
Simple technique, no complicated instructions.
By the end of the show, I will have completed a watercolor painting.
And anyone in our studio audience who's watching and anyone at home who's still
watching by the end of the show should be able to do the same thing.
It's fun.
It's easy.
We'll get to it right after this.
Tonight, on Friday Night Videos and the Chris Elliott Special, your host is
Late Night with David Letterman's Chris Elliott.
Chris's special guests tonight are Run DMC, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Orange
Juice Jones, and the Smithereens.
We'll have broadcast premieres from U2 and Bryan Adams, plus Cool in the Gang
and Crowded House.
And now, Chris Elliott.
Thank you.
Thank you very much and welcome back.
We're about ready to start our watercolor painting tonight.
Let me show you what the end result is going to be, what we're working for.
This is it right over here.
Isn't that beautiful?
That's a watercolor landscape.
I don't know who the artist is.
But let's get started with ours.
Now, every watercolor painting starts with a basic wash or a base tone.
And we get that by dipping our brush, our big brush, taking our big brush,
dipping it in some blue paint and just, oh, that's easy.
Isn't that nice?
You just go back and forth like that.
A little more water.
I think you want it as wet as you can.
There you go.
Back and forth.
That's it.
I'm using a Windsor Rumbacher Mach 3 camel hair brush tonight just because I
like that mobility.
But you can really use any kind of brush at home.
There we go.
Okay.
Well, we've got our basic wash down.
And now what we want to do is lay in the foreground.
And we do that just by...
You know, this is going to have to dry for a little bit before I lay in our
foreground.
It won't be long, but it is going to have to dry.
So maybe we should show some of those Friday night videos or something new.
We'll be back and we'll jump right into our watercolor.
The excitement is too much to control.
Well, we have a broadcast premiere.
You two.
With or without you.
Take it away.
You two.
Is it still wet, Chris?
Yes.
Has this ever happened before?
No.
You know, Chris, I really love your stuff on The Letterman Show.
Thank you very much.
Let me ask you a question.
Is most of the stuff on the show scripted or just off the top of Dave's head?
Well, no, there's a lot of stuff that's scripted.
I mean, he has writers.
We write stuff.
Let me ask you another question.
Do you know how I can get tickets for The Morning Show with Marriott Hartley
and Rollinsmith?
No.
No, I don't.
Sorry.
We'll be right back.
Hey, that's my tuna sandwich.
Hey, come on.
When we come back, a good friend of mine, Marv Albert,
and the wild and wacky in the world of sports, so stay tuned.
Thank you.
Thank you very much, and welcome back.
Not much is happening on the painting over there,
so let's take a look at the Chris Elliott Achievement Awards,
the wild and wacky in the world of sports.
Yes.
We start out with the world of golf.
John Mahaffrey takes his time, the putt of the month.
He putts, and oh, he misses.
Oh, had to be a close call.
Then we go to boxing, punch of the month.
Take a look at this round.
I don't know who's in this.
Oh, that had to hurt the head of I don't know who.
One more time in slow motion.
Let's take a look at it.
And oh, yes.
That had to hurt.
Next we go to bowling, and the world of the bazaar.
Take a look at this bowl.
This is weird.
This is weird.
This is weird.
He rolls it, and oh, only two are left standing.
How does he do it?
Weird.
Finally, we end with the world of the high rollers.
Atlantic City last weekend.
Look at this.
Bar, seven, bar.
Yes.
That had to pay a lot of money in slow motion.
Bar, seven, bar.
Had to pay a lot of money to some lucky gambler.
Well, that's it for the wild and wacky of the world of sports.
We'll be right back.
Ladies and gentlemen, we're all very excited here.
This is a broadcast premiere by Brian Adams.
Seat of the night.
Oh, ladies and gentlemen, Lisa, Lisa, and Colt James.
Wow.
Wow.
Geez, well, thanks for just doing a little walk-on on my special.
I appreciate that.
I'm in the process of showing our studio audience and home audience
how to paint in watercolor.
It's not going too well.
My base coat isn't drying fast enough,
and everything I put on it kind of runs.
Oh, this is yours?
Well, yeah, this is one of mine.
Oh, you think I can kind of buy this one?
After the show, Chris.
Buy this?
Yeah, how's that?
You mean you want to buy one of my paintings?
Yes.
Is that okay?
I mean...
Okay.
Is it for sale?
Of course it is.
I'll give you a number after the show,
but first, let's talk about your music video.
What is it?
Toe to head, head to toe?
What is it?
What's it called?
Head to toe.
It's head to toe.
Okay, anything about it you want to tell me?
Well, it has sort of that 60s feel.
It's like that Supremes kind of feel.
Well, terrific.
Let's take a look at it.
Head to toe.
What do you think?
$2.50?
Coming up, Arne Juice Jones on the Chris Elliott special,
not on Friday night videos,
on my special, right after this.
Thank you.
Thank you, and welcome back.
It's still not dry yet, but it will be pretty soon.
Still something?
No, I'm painting over there.
I'm joined, you can see, by a good friend of mine,
Arne Juice Jones, ladies and gentlemen.
And Arne, you are actually a guest of the Chris Elliott special,
not Friday night videos.
What happened when Friday night videos called you?
They tried to get me, man, but you know, I had to come see you.
All right.
Now, I understand one of your relatives is in the audience.
Yeah, my little brother.
Who is he?
What's up?
Well, it's a terrific looking audience, isn't it?
Yeah, yeah.
Arne, tell the folks at home in our studio audience
about your early musical influence.
I know there's a man who influenced me greatly,
and I knew you way back when,
and he also influenced you.
And who is that?
Smokey Rums.
That's right.
And my little brother.
And your little brother right over there.
Yeah.
Role models.
We've been talking a lot about me.
Let's talk about role models.
Who are some of your role models?
Russell Simmons.
Russell Simmons.
I don't know who that is.
Run's older brother.
Run's older brother.
Yeah, yeah, a good friend of mine.
All right.
And you, man.
And you.
I was waiting for that.
I know.
Okay.
Let's talk about the videos now.
You have two out.
Is it just two out that you have right now?
The rain?
Yeah, it's just two.
Yeah.
And we're going to see a little from Here I Go Again,
I think, in a little bit.
Tell us about the rain now.
You have quite a speech there at the end.
Was that all improvised,
or was that all scripted?
All my stuff is scripted.
No, we, my little brother, his girlfriend,
and, you know, it's just went and leapt on it.
You know, I'm really getting sick of your little brother.
All right.
Well, let's take a look at Here I Go Again,
Orange Juice Jones.
Well, here's a little something called
Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House.
I think you'll like it.
All right.
We'll be right back,
and I promise you we'll get started on this watercolor.
It's really going to be good.
We're going to jump right in with our happy foreground
and our happy trees and happy clouds.
Well, paper is still a little wet,
but we're almost ready.
But this is a segment I wanted to do anyway.
It's kind of a question and answer thing.
It gives me a little opportunity
to tell you something about myself.
Any questions?
Well, you know, I was in Teen Beat last January.
Take a look at this.
Look at that picture, huh?
Late Night Hunk.
Well, that's something, isn't it?
Hey, weren't you kicked out of Moment Chance?
Well, yes, sir.
I was kicked out of Moment Chance
about seven years ago for stealing.
I didn't take much.
Some pencils, legal pads, and toilet paper,
which I guess they use a lot in their acts,
so they were a little upset about that.
But that was a long time ago.
The legitimate stage is still my first love,
and you can see me every night on Broadway
in a very special production.
I think you have a promo.
Take a look.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Wang Chong.
And let's go.
Don't go away.
The Chris Elliott special
and Friday Night Videos
will be right back,
and Friday Night Videos' next guest
is Run DMC,
so I'll be interviewing them.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you,
and welcome back to Friday Night Videos
and the Chris Elliott special.
I'm joined here,
you can see,
by the hot rap group,
Run DMC.
Guys,
before we get started,
I just want to make sure
you guys understand
that this is Friday Night Videos
and the Chris Elliott special,
and you're actually guests
of Friday Night Videos
and not the Chris Elliott special.
But I'd be happy to have you on my show,
but you were booked
on Friday Night Videos.
Right.
I have done my homework, though.
What's it like to be
the most successful rap group around?
All right.
What do you guys think
of the painting
I'm working on over here?
It's kind of blue.
It's all right.
It's not just blue.
I just like the down...
What is it supposed to be, actually?
Well, I'm working on a landscape.
It's going to be...
It's that over there, actually.
It's going to be a little brook,
winding brook,
and some sky,
and some happy little trees.
That's beautiful.
That's beautiful.
Is this the tree right here?
Well, that was going to be the start
of one of the trees.
It kind of bled.
It looks more like the brook, though.
Right.
It looks a little like the brook.
Maybe it's a brook tree.
The brook tree.
That's a brook tree.
That looks a little like a brook tree.
My base coat hasn't dried yet.
Oh, I understand.
So I can't get started.
That's nice.
Well, tell me what it was like
to work with Penn and Teller.
It was great.
You worked with them on your new video.
What was...
What is that?
It's tricky?
It's a rock or rhyme.
It's a rock or rhyme.
Tell me about that.
Back to the front.
It's tricky.
Well, actually,
us and Teller and Penn,
we go back a long ways,
you know.
Me and Penn,
we used to wash dogs for a living
when we was like in the fifth grade.
We used to wash dogs together
with the Beastie Boys.
Yeah, with the Beastie Boys.
All right.
Well, let's go ahead
and take a look at
It's Tricky
with Run DMC
and Penn and Teller.
Don't go away.
We'll be right back
with more of the Chris Elliott special
and Friday night videos.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
And let me just say
how honored I feel
to be part of the Chris Elliott special.
Yes!
Now, let me
