Norman Lear Reaffirms To Bob That “All We Have Is This Moment” | Bob Saget

all right this is a delicate subject uh delicate for some people because some
people are delicate
down there but this is something that's below the belt i've never really talked
about that
subject matter so if you're a kid don't listen to this if you're past puberty
and you've gone
through a bunch and you understand it still might not be for you it's for
people that can't perform
if a guy is not able to perform that's because he's not selling enough tickets
no that's not
what i meant if a guy can't perform it means he needs maybe you need some help
and if it's safe
and it's good for you because the doctor says it's okay and you're a good
candidate
you can do things like last longer and go a few extra rounds probably run
faster jump higher
and i'm sure you want to be confident in everything you do and dare i say sex i
mean sex is an important
thing you go to the gym some people go to the shrink they try to take care of
themselves and shrink is
something you don't want to do when you're in bed with someone you care about
or that you just met what
you want to do is go to bluechew.com bluechew.com has the first ever chewable
that brings your
performance in the bedroom to another level i'm talking a five out of five that's
that's that's my
metrics so check this out right over here this is the truth they've got the
same active ingredients
that are in viagra and cialis so you know that they work and since they're chewable
they can work
faster they just work faster if you chew them you chew them and you do them
what you could take them
anytime day or night seriously you could wake up from a nap you could do
anything have breakfast have
some eggs and then scramble yours you can have them on a full stomach an empty
stomach i don't know do
whatever you want with your stomach and this stuff is cheaper than those other
two meds so this is a no
brainer in fact it's the small brain that's working here basically if you like
sex and i know a lot
of people that do you'll like bluechew.com plus you don't need to go to the
doctor's office
or spend time waiting in the pharmacy line because that can be embarrassing

go to bluetooth.com and
think of the person you're with hey welcome to a very incredibly special
episode of uh my podcast my show
my episode is uh with norman lear the norman lear the incredibly brilliant
wonderful man
um who is a friend of mine which uh i'm shocked that i get to know this
incredible human being
uh creator of so many shows producer of all in the family um writer of all
these shows uh sanford and son
uh good times the jeffersons um one day at a time which is now on pop after
having uh left netflix
because he wouldn't let it go this beautiful latina version of the show and he
has a three-year contract
to continue to make it and he's 97 years old and uh he's brilliant yeah i don't
have to tell you you'll
you'll be listening for yourself he has so many accolades um and what do they
all mean you'll find out
what what they mean to him as uh you're about to hear and see if you're on
youtube right now
but he's you know the peabody award emmys um uh kennedy center honors so many
writers guild honors i mean
the accolades are crazy but he is all about uh the work and uh being a good
human being
and uh putting out love and caring about humanity and uh we're gonna get into
it so here comes my friend
norman lear
i just want to hug you so bad right now
oh my this is tough but it's wonderful because we get to do this i love it but
but you've got to
everybody that's listening has to go on instagram and see uh the norman lear
and
watch how he enjoys tangerine juice i had i didn't know i didn't know i've been
spending all my time
trying to get tangerine juice but you can't find it now i'm having trouble but
uh no no it's not it's
everybody doesn't carry it no we're going to continue this until everybody does
we i think the world
all the problems could be solved with tangerine juice i really do absolutely
there's no doubt about it
you got to send it to washington fill up all houses with it
nobody's in the house right now but um there's something that you that you've
taught me and i've
tried to learn it through all all the years and when we started being friends
it was one of the greatest
moments of my life um uh it's true because you're you know well it cuts both
ways well thanks
yeah but there's something about being in the moment and appreciating the
moment and yeah you're
you're 97 now and i wouldn't give your name age out but you're proud to give it
out and um and you're
not you're not the run of the mill 97 and you know that and i'm knocking on all
the wood that i have
in the building and there is wood to be had here um but i like to think i wasn't
uh a run of the
mill 47. no that's my question 50 years ago did you have that be in the moment
attitude philosophy
about life i know you've changed so much throughout all you've told me through
all the different chapters
of your life um but did you have that in the moment feeling throughout all of
it i don't know how
how old i was the first time i thought there were two little words in our
language that we don't uh
that we what's happening that we don't uh
accent enough or we don't understand we don't pay enough attention to over and
next when something is
over over over it's over yes we are on to neck but if there was a hammock
connected to those two little
words over and next lying in that hammock would be the best way i could express
a definition of living in
the moment i agree the hammock the hammock between over and neck so it's so
interesting i mean you and i
met well i had we weren't close but i i always looked up to you all my whole
life and most people have
um i i've already uh listed all of your uh credentials which are uh longer than
i mean if someone is to
imdb did you mention did you mention six glorious children that i could not be
proud of that's right
there that oh i love that yeah so what i did was i i went and if anybody googles
they're not gonna have
enough paper in their printer to print out your your life and accomplishments
but this i know
is your six glorious children and your beautiful wife lynn and um is that the
cast of the one day
at a time also who's the guy on the right on the left this is um oh you know
what it is it is the cast
it's the cast but then it says you're married to lynn and and your six children
ellen kate maggie
benjamin brianna and madeline but that is the cast of one day at a time that's
the world we're in oh and
he has children but you would say i say my biggest accomplishment now that i've
grown up is my kids
my three daughters and would you say your family is your biggest accomplishment
without any question
without any question and we know them is to understand why i can say that with
such confidence
when i see pictures of you and footage of you when you were doing all in the
family when you were on
the floor when you were doing the warm-up for that show it doesn't feel but you're
on in play at that
point you're on game you're in the middle of the most successful show on
television that i never saw
anything like it since being there and seeing it seeing that it was what 90
minutes to shoot an
episode and then you would do a second one right away is that how it went we
did we did one at five o'clock
took notes had a little bite to eat and then did another one for a second
audience at eight o'clock
and i saw both in one day to see how it was done and then and then i i mean it
was theater it was the
most brilliantly written it was it was basically like watching a play there
were very few stops
that was the intention to do it as a one-act play bob where uh where were we
shooting when you saw it
cbs television city oh my god that was early on yeah that was before we moved
over to metro media
right exactly and it was um you you it was palpable in the room that everybody
had this
mission that you had created because it all starts from the top you cast the
most amazing people but
you do you think you're a different person now than you were then or do you
feel it's just another
version of you
i i like to believe i've uh i've grown well you i like to believe that's part
of uh the course for all
of us but i will never forget the beginning of all of that i remember doing the
warm-ups i loved doing
the warm-up talking to the audience that was a great kick did people have
questions for you from the
audience yeah yes they had questions but you know they had questions about what
they were going to see
and what they're adjusting right we talked before and after when you're when
you're in play and when
you're working and you're in control of this giant thing uh that was this
amazing piece of work did you
find yourself not devoting as much time to your family was it a difficulty were
you having a split
um was your energy split emotionally i don't know if i was smart enough or
sensitive enough to realize
at the beginning in 1971 as i did in 1977 let's say when it was clear to me
that uh i had by then
five or six children at home and uh and uh this is when i was doing the
original one day at a time
i thought about it then because i had two kids in the show and five kids at
home or six kids uh
and the kids in on at the studio were getting more attention from me than my
kids at home
at some point that dawned on me and uh and i didn't know whether to feel proud
or guilty or both right
i went through that with the cast of full house that were young kids
and i think my children um my three daughters are real are and jenny they there's
no way they couldn't
feel that because um aubrey was just one year younger than the olsen twins and
i was changing their diaper
when they were a year old on the set and then um i also did it when they were
older when they were in
their 30s um no uh that's a joke actually uh i never changed a young lady's
diaper they're not in their 30s yet
no they are now ashley and mary kate are arby's 33 and they're 34 and uh and
there's still love there
um and you've kept in contact with pretty much everybody right that's that's
still around
yes pretty much everybody you know not on a regular basis i'm doing one day at
a time again right now
and mckenzie phillips is part of it i'm uh thrilled to say and that that's
emotional because i i just went
through that that must be full circle beautiful for you in many ways also and
with her all of her
things she's obstacles that she's overcome yeah so it's also a a terrific
learning experience because
this is a latino version yep and so i'm working with uh with uh writers that
knew more one of them was
herself uh born in puerto rico uh glorious glory glory estefan was a guest this
week that's what she saw
oh my but uh gloria colette uh fabulous right but but you you'd done the
impossible with that show
and i i went through it with you i mean you you netflix said you know no more
we've done enough
and you were so hurt that the cast the crew all these people didn't get to make
this work anymore
and you did something that not a lot of people some people can
