Jeff Ross and Bob Get Through the Now By Making Each Other Laugh | Bob Saget

hey everybody it's your pal bob saget here uh i am your pal seriously i don't
loan money though
but you there are companies i i don't have sponsors but i'm sure they loan
money
they're called loan sharks no i don't know what they're called i've never
borrowed money from a
company bail bonds never done that either anyway this is bob saget's here for
you and i am uh you
know the guy in the title uh i'm excited to be doing this episode it's with a
friend i've been
friends with for a long time we're going to find out you know him from from all
the roasts he's done
he's the roast master general he's done many many series he is a bonafide
amazing headliner out on
tour when we can go on tour again we're going to talk about all that stuff and
just personal stories
that we have with comedians and people that we love and have known all these
years it's jeff ross
mr jeffrey ross also jeff lip schultz which i'll bring up because i want to
know that because why
would you change lip schultz into anything else is such a great name and in the
meantime i will tell
you as we start that you do the stuff you got to do on all these podcasts i
know you hear it on a
loop you have to rate to review and subscribe or you can follow if that's how
you're listening
and that thing up top is a wonderful uh little thing with a phone number and
you can call me
and here comes jeff ross
so here's my friend for many years i'm going to find out how many years jeff ross
jeff jeff
jeff emotional support human this is something that i've been getting in touch
with during quarantine
is that we got to really look out for each other that is exactly why i'm doing
my podcast and why
you're doing your podcast which is uh it's pretty damn great your podcast
thanks it's called thick skin
and i call our fans our listeners emotional support humans ashes for short but
apparently in certain
languages and esh is a curse so to everyone except slovenia they're they're
ashes well slovenia is a
beautiful place i uh i've uh ordered in from there uh it's on doordash i think
it's on postmates i'm not
sure now how'd you come up with the title thick skin is that because of the
roasting and a person has to have
a thick skin in order to take it that's a big part of it if roasting is about
dishing it out having
thick skin is about taking it it's the other side of roasting it's a more uh
introspective look at
at comedy and human nature and to go back even deeper i have a scar i don't
know if i'm going to show
it to you but when i was a little little boy it's right here i never saw it i i
my my now
my grandmother was making tea uh in the bronx and i was a little four month
five month old baby
crawling on the floor and my nana helen in the bronx she she went to move the
kettle from the
stove to the table and she tripped over me and she poured a few you know she
poured some of it on my
back and burnt me and my grandfather my pop jack who whose ring i wear to this
day picked me up and
he ran me 10 blocks to the hospital and i knew very early on what it was like
to have thick skin
i still have the scar and i think it you know we all talk about taking a joke
and especially me if i
dish it out i got to be able to take it and and you're what people don't know
is what a sensitive guy you
are and i know that and how you take things like i do sometimes i don't have
thick skin you know that i
don't and i'm this guy that people think or from stand-up specials think i'm brash
or whatever but
i'm both and so are you you're both you're you're people think they know you
bob and and and of course
they know you they've been watching you you're you're america's dad for decades
but until they see
you real that's why i like this podcast that you're doing but thank you super
back at you because it
shows sides of ourselves that are just more us and and we get to give stuff to
people and there were
there were times where maybe we didn't want to show that in our career but i
think the times call for
it now we always wanted to protect our private life our emotions our insecurities
our vulnerabilities
even my empathy for a while as the roast guy was a liability people go he's you
know so so to me it's
important and i i think i really understood who you were as a non-comic when i
saw you host the
scleroderma benefits in new york and los angeles because and you've always been
there for me so
thank you you've always been there to help us of course it's an amazing cause
and a heartbreaking
disease but what i'm getting at is that you will you'll and this is hard for
you but you'll take
comedy out of the equation and you'll talk from the heart and and jokes slip
out because you're you're
that's who you are you you think in punchlines bob but when you when what
comics are oftentimes very
empathetic people uh you know you you kind of have to go there in your heart in
order to get away
with the things that we get away with and the reason that you know i love your
brash style on stage
is because i know it comes from affection and it comes from a place of
sensitivity oh you're gonna make
me cry i wish we could hug each other but you're you're not as virtual hug you're
not you're less
i'm more cautious i think i mean i've seen you at your pool you'll post on
instagram you got friends
over well do you get concerned about the covid and everything yeah i didn't
certainly didn't quarantine
for six months to get it now that would be awful right well i made it now i'm
going to miami to party
but um you know any anything i've done socially has been very careful and very
calculated and if i'm
not paranoid luckily my friends are because hey listen man my whole tour was
postponed till next summer
same so i don't want to get sick i mean if i'm going to be on hiatus or sabbatical
or you what do you
ever want to call it quarantine at least i get to do fun stuff like your
podcast as opposed to you know being in
an uh on a respirator at a at the hospital i mean i'm i'm luckier than most and
that i'm comfortable
here and i got something i got a little thing here i'm going to show you i hope
by little thing you don't
mean your penis oh i can't show that oh you can i happen to know it's not that
little
i'm trying to i'm trying to show you this puppy i got oh that tiny little puppy
she's six months old i haven't named her yet
you have not named her six months you haven't named it no she's six months old
i only got her a few days
ago i'm oh she's my parents didn't name me till i was four she's a she's a
german shepherd so i'm
waiting to find out if she's anti-semitic before i decide to adopt her forever
how would you find
out if she's anti-semitic well you like hold a latke in front of her being
signs she's teething
on my arms quite a bit well that's not anti-semitic she wants to eat you
that's that's the oh my god what a baby that is a beautiful beautiful girl that
is a gigantic
animal that's a baby the doctor prescribed her because as you can see
i have a an older nana this is nana and she's a big german old german shepherd
did your grandmother
look a lot like that one have you shown nana the scar that she gave you
and and and they're like best friends after five days and look she's like
grabbing her like like
she's her own puppy like her own nana nana has cancer in her leg and the the
vet literally called
me and said i think you need a puppy to keep nana young i've been told that
before they they need
companions yeah and and and and and it's working like with this little puppy on
the first night was
she just woke up in a nightmare she'd never been in a building before she was
found by the
animal hope and rescue here in california uh did you go down there and pick her
out is that what
happened it wouldn't let me because of covid so what they do is they sent me a
picture
literally the vet said this is this is like tinder kind of one
so you just swipe this is you and dogs you can get in no trouble with that by
the way this is that's
the only thing left for us jeff to not get in trouble if we're swiping and we're
just trying to
pick an animal to save look they're so cute they're playing together all the
time they love each other
they're looking at each other's uh stuff they go for the junk we don't do that
i'm sure many comedians
have talked about that what if we went up to each other and sniffed each other
like that
that was the first bit i had ever heard about see if you remember this when i
was a little kid i'm only
a few years younger than you but when i was a little kid my parents came home
from catch a rising star
and my and they completely acted out cheech and chong as dogs do you remember
that no it was one
of the first exposures to like adult stand-up i ever had with just my parents
crawling around like dogs
re-recreating this famous cheech and chong bit and the bit was cheech and chong
being dogs together
right flipping each other's butts and talking and they were they were
revolutionary they did something
you almost feel like you wish they were we were starting now you know so
interesting and you
don't see a lot of great comedy teams but no no you don't i don't think i think
there's a reason i
think is people just don't like each other i don't know remember i remember
buddy hack and telling me uh
they asked him to be in the three stooges when he was a young comic one of the
guys was retiring or sick
and he they offered him a lot of money to do a three stooges movie and tour
with the three stooges
it's like the new the new uh yeah it was the curly role which was shamp for a
while then curly joe
dorita and joe besser all these guys and i remember buddy said you know i
thought about it i just had
a baby and i had another one on the way and he said you know in the end i could
have used the money
but i didn't want to wake up every morning wondering how the other two guys was
feeling
you know i i don't know if we talked about it but i knew larry oh really i when
i was uh 14 i was
living in the valley i was my dad moved a lot as you know so i lived in philly
and virginia and then
came out to la for a couple years and i went to mulholland junior high and larry
spoke and he had
a stroke and he was in a wheelchair and he said it was rough you know mo used
to beat the crap out of
us and broke our ribs and there was no insurance and they didn't pay us all
right thanks kids you
know he just basically told you how bad it was jules white made all the money
we got screwed
and i was a giant three stooges fan and i was 14 and i my mother drove me to
this uh assembly
because i didn't drive and i talked to larry and and he invited me to visit him
at the motion picture
country house and hospital in woodland hills and i visited him three times and
i brought eight
millimeter movies with no sound of the three stooges films i got from uh black
hawk films in davenport
iowa eight millimeter not super eight eight millimeter it was just sprockets
there was no film
and and my mother drove me and i'd visit him and i'd show him the films because
they did he couldn't
watch the old three stooges movies because they wouldn't give him uhf back then
there was no cable
there was no anything and uh richard jenny used to god bless him used to have a
great bit which is
when we were kids we we didn't have feet we had stumps we had to walk in snow
in order to stand
upright we we just took our stumps and we just walked in snow that's the only
way we didn't fall
down you know how somebody tells you how bad it was when they were kids but a
world without internet right
now would be a blessing i think oh my god social media i was thinking like it's
like it's like hot
take everyone weigh in on everything it's like why does nobody can just walk
past anything and
you know i don't feel like twitter is even a safe space for comics anymore as
much as i love twitter and
social media i i saved the heat and i tweeted this out because someone said oh
you just use your twitter
now for promotional stuff i can go yeah i don't feel safe ever si
