Kevin Nealon and Bob Discuss Comedian Survival Instincts & Look Forward to the Future of Stand Up

hey everybody it is the end of uh the year it is uh this is it goodbye 2020 and
what better way
to get out of this year with my special guest kevin nealon a friend for 40
years holy crap am
i old anyway uh welcome to bob saget's here for you and i am and and and i will
be next year as
we uh climb out of this insanity and reboot and reset and uh all that stuff regress
no not regress
i don't i digress so this is that show that that special show and what better
way to end 2020 with
a guy who you know of course from snl uh man with a plan so many movies so many
adam sandler movies so
many films he's been in um he's one of my favorite stand-ups one of my favorite
people
he's just smart and hilarious and uh and i want to see what's going on with him
which is going to
happen in just a moment we have not caught up in a while so this probably will
take a while and he
will complain about it knowing him that's what will happen that's our
relationship since i was 21 that's
what i told the judge um so uh you know what to do with this podcast you rate
reviews subscribe you know
and you can comment do that and then in the upper top of the thing not red fox
and uh rodney danger
field if you're looking on youtube at the picture but you can call a number
when i tell you on my twitter
or my instagram story when i'll be calling you guys to see how you're doing um
and i know it's a difficult
time for almost everybody in many different ways so i'm sending you so much
good thoughts
and know that we will get past all of this and i hope you guys are doing okay
and had a wonderful
holiday and continue to have a wonderful holiday as we bring in 2021 a year of
a year of uncertainty and
change and uh hopefully onward and upward with uh people especially you and
your loved ones
and your businesses and uh all the people you care about so okay enough of that
i did my hallmark
card thing but i meant it sincerely that's why i do this podcast i i've got the
sincerity thing that
happened i can't help it it's what happened to me it doesn't mean i'm not going
to talk about my dick
i'm sorry i meant my richard um this is not a this is not going to be this is a
pg-13 podcast today it's
kevin nealon so without any further ado i'm gonna i've been having trouble
getting him into the zoom
so here we go here comes uh a special special podcast here he is uh kevin nealon
kevin it's been a while and it's and we were gonna go to dinner but then the
world ended
um for a while well it didn't end it just um it was a reset and i thought you
know for a good reason
i agree i'd like at the end of this i'd like to see who made out the best
during this whole pandemic
okay we could do a competition on that let me turn a little light up do i look
better with more light
do i look better with more light or do you like it with less you can wash out
your skin as much as
possible i'll bring it down oh my grandmother you look nice and pink i like it
yeah that's uh but
nobody people listening to this right now on apple don't know what our
background is unless they're
watching on youtube and if you're doing that you got a lot of time on your
hands to sit there and
watch two guys talking in a split screen do you think anybody's really watching
though yeah there are
people i know at least 10. you know so many people have podcasts and it's kind
of become an actor's
eight by ten now you know yeah i didn't do it for that reason though but then
everybody just went oh i'm
not working so i'm gonna do a podcast and me too i um i i i haven't done a
podcast i did the hiking
show which you were on by the way i loved it and now it's going is it netflix
that it's going on
we're um we're doing um the show at tbs you know we're that's tbs that's so
cool that's so great
danny zucker who was a producer writer of modern family i love danny zucker i
worked with him on a
a couple of shows one was uh surviving suburbia which lasted one one season one
season
uh no it was um uh cynthia stevens oh yeah i remember stevenson cynthia stevenson
i'm great
i don't remember her i don't know who she is but um but he's a great writer i
never heard of him and
then all of a sudden we hooked up as partners to write this and everybody uh
says oh i love danny he's
great he's one of the funniest guys alive how many funny guys out there alive
six six and he's one of
the six i think there's a couple thousand probably i mean you're one of the
funniest people i've ever
known i'm underrated i'm so underrated yeah that's what this is about that's
why that's why i'm well
i'm doing this podcast because i was out doing stand-up as you do and by the
end of last year i
was ready to do a special this year and i was noticing all the tension and i
was having people
yelling at each other in the audience and i don't even incite it i don't talk
politics and it was like
racist stuff and weird stuff and i just wanted to do something that people
could go to because
i felt like i wanted to talk and do this and have friends on and sometimes i
call people and see how
they're doing that you know that's always exciting it actually is i'm just
being facetious to the woody
allen book yeah i just said pedantic and facetious which is what yeah but he
says that you know people
everybody thinks he's smart and intellect and he says it's not really true he
says i just
you know i recite certain phrases from books that i've remembered i'll put in
my movie and then all
of a sudden and also because i wear his glasses people think i'm smart but then
you know he continues
with the book and he's using all of these references and you know big words no
he's smart well it's
interesting as you know the people that are really smart don't go around
telling you they're smart
they don't say they're the smartest person ever they say they're not smart they
use a lot of big
words though and math equations but does that make math equations can make you
smart because you could
build like the o-ring you know which is how i kept from getting pregnant oh now
that takes me to about
19 subjects because first thing i just love you i had that's i this is that
reset no no it's not not in a
physical way because i've never even we've slept over in a condo together and i
never saw you naked i
didn't try to and you didn't try to do that to me i was in the shower the i was
never worried the door
was going to open uh we were gonna i have three options right now mr side i
could i don't hang up
don't don't that's not one of them but i could look at you your little zoom
frame or i could look at
mine and see me right look at the camera lens well which is the best right well
no i think just talking
to each other and i'm looking at your face that's what i'm looking at and then
i'll go to the lens
sometimes just yeah i have an idea for an app or some kind of a gadget and i'm
going to say it now
because i never follow through on anything it's going to be retinal go ahead i
want to somehow
get the lens to be over the person's picture that you're talking to so it looks
like you're talking
to them you could do that if you stacked our images but it's hard on a zoom i've
already lost interest in
that idea i'm moving on i think it was a a good idea i was thinking you were
talking like retinal
scanning or something like you would do oh here's my here's my other idea that
i'm never gonna follow
through on you know how you hate to like put your you know to pay for the
parking meter and for the
credit card and all that of course a chip that goes into the car when they
manufacture it that can be
programmed by the city so when you just pull up you know they charge you a flat
rate
that's a great idea but you could also have it on your phone it could be an app
on your phone
i've already lost interest in this idea see that's the second idea you bailed
on but yeah but there's
genius in you you're like woody allen except you you know you haven't gone
through as much scrutiny
i'm just like this i'm guy who's like everything's a lot of work for you know
like i say i got a great
idea and then i go this seems like a lot of work and they could be great
inventions you know i had three
ideas for vaccines before anybody came up with one and i thought they weren't
for kova though they
were just random right like no they were just for pandemic people people that
were tired of being
inside okay so it's just it was something to make people want to go outside do
you think this is the
closest we'll come to being like under house arrest or a restraining order it
feels it i mean we've been
told that if we gather in large groups for thanksgiving we're going to be
arrested now if you
little legally you cannot arrest people for large gatherings if you suddenly
make it a law but if
you put them in jail isn't that encouraging more covet problems it is it is but
you know what a lot of
people know this but when the pilgrims came over the native americans told them
that they could not
gather in large gatherings for right and so they slaughtered a lot of them that's
how they reacted that
was passive aggressive behavior that was and i think we still have that now in
our country and we don't
need it anymore we need to somehow i hate to say it but uh work together and
get along somehow which
seems impossible but i can't help but be i mean you've learned a lot in your
life you've always been
matured to me in that um your breast came in long before mine but kevin hello i
think it's mature i
think it's uh being uh fearful so i hold back you know i don't i don't think as
many risks as you do
but but see i look at you the opposite way because you're you well you have a
great poker face then or
the way you show it isn't expressed because you're listening and you are yeah
you do have a we both i
mean as comedians you tend to have a way that's survival instinct first of all
it's not a poker
face it's an uno face when i play you know i play the game uno yeah that's what
you're saying a lot
of people confuse it with a poker face but that's my face i've never i met one
person in my life i think
that played uno no what is uno it's spanish for one yes and that's all i know
but how many uh of these
you've done so far i'm in the 70s 70s already yeah yeah a week a couple of
weeks i was doing a couple
a week and now i'm down to one a week but sometimes i throw in a second one
especially if i want to call
people and see how people are doing so you started doing this about two months
ago i know i i started this
in uh february end of february i started planning to do it in 2019 and then i
was in studio at studio
71 for two episodes and then they said lockdown and then i've got a podcast
board sitting here
that's perfect and a pale-faced background i mean i was going to start one in
um
march i had all the planning and i was building the studio was right next to
the netflix uh studio on
sunset it was a 30 000 square foot studio i was building for my podcast and
then the pandemic hit
and my my workers uh just bailed and so if you drive down sunset now you'll see
a big structure
there that's half finished and that's my studio i can't believe you would have
such large space for
just something that requires two microphones and a wall well that's where you're
wrong it's not i don't i
i only interview teams like football teams they'll all be there so you could
have the whole cast of
like ted lasso there with jason sudeikis yeah yeah i haven't had a show yet but
i like him as an actor
he is this is the best thing he's done a lot of great work i'm gonna write this
down i have to write
every showdown that you must you must you must watch all 10 episodes with susan
it is one of the
most important your children uh yeah kids can watch it doesn't come watching no
no no it could be
gable can watch this oh my son okay yeah yeah your son's name is gable i don't
know if you knew that
yeah yeah okay can i make one recommendation you seem like you you know you're
young yet i mean we
know norman lear we we were lucky enough we went to
