saying it
i don't like doing it but i can't help it i love this guy so much it's ben
folds we are friends
but i was just lucky enough to literally fan out on him and uh took my young
daughters to
go see one of his shows uh at a theater in la called the l ray and it was i'd
never seen anyone
like it i'd never seen a performer do what he could do open up a piano put the
microphone inside pluck
the strings inside the baby grand uh leave the mic in there put it on a sampler
have it echoing for
five minutes assemble a drum set that they would bring to him drum by drum kit
piece by kit piece
and then do a drum solo for 15 minutes all the while while the bass note is
reverbing through
the piano and then they disassemble the drum set he goes back and continues the
song he is an epic
writer uh singer performer um you you'll know so much of his music please do
yourself a favor if
you're not familiar with ben foals music you're in for such happiness because
there's nobody like him
and he's funny smart and he's just so positive and really important important
to music and important
to have that kind of energy in our world so you know what to do with this
podcast you put it up your ass
no no see that's not nice because i don't want you to do that how can you put a
podcast up your ass
if it's on an iphone you want it on an mp3 player because that would fit anyway
you rate review you
subscribe and pretend i didn't say that and um you can leave comments if they're
nice if they're not i'll
take a note hell yeah i'll take a note anyway this is my friend um i say that a
lot because i'm lucky
i got some friends and he's so talented he's so amazing so please uh welcome as
i admit into the zoom
room ben folds
oh my grandmother how are you i can't i'm okay now that i'm seeing you
looking good you're looking good look at you and your voluminous amazing setup
i can just pull any
any book off the shelf that's hilarious anybody not watching on youtube which
you're not uh you have
to look at this it's uh it's it's a it's a backdrop you have a beautiful psych
of a library it's it's a
virtual library it's a drop cloth it's virtual but you can touch it that's yeah
that's that's a marriage for
some people um wow room shots are set so we are you're a day ahead of me and
you always have been
yeah i'm in the future oh my grandmother i miss you so much yeah i miss you too
man miss our scotches
oh man we could even publicize the restaurant because it's closed r d it's
closed it's closed it's going
to open again but we would sit there and not really eat fries yeah you sent
fries around the um around
the restaurant for your crazy friends yeah there was that cat there was a there
was a guy you guys were
sending back and forth massive loads of fries that was jerry's jerry zucker the
director of airplane and
ghost and he actually one time i was sitting there and a french fry hit me in
the head and it was him
he's throwing he's a grown man but again uh you know he did you know what are
you going to do naked gun and
and uh airplane you you expect the man to throw french fries at your head and
all right i just
think it's amazing that people can go to that age and still still be children
like in a good way that's
so great that's that's a worry that's what i know you're gonna be that's what i
am i mean that's what
and people i meet are are like that you know uh i i i hate name dropping i've
been doing it all the time
but i can't help it so well it's like it's it's where you work that's your job
it's my job but i i
overdo it it's like saying hey i i i know him or her you know i'm somebody um i
haven't been canceled
doing it i think it's fine you know they probably drop your name too i think so
recently i mean eric
idol is a friend uh monty python great um and amazing musician as well you know
wrote spam a lot
uh the music with oh i didn't know that yeah uh with god i don't want to get
the wrong name but it's
uh but oh my god i i do this all the time when i can't drop a name that's you
forget them yeah that's
but the biggest name i have is is you ben that's that's maybe there's a saying
and they said there's
better to have dropped and forgotten than to have never dropped right right
some people we want to
see them drop and be forgotten thank you i'm gonna need loud rim shots this
whole time is that really
loud no it's not loud enough oh yeah if you're gonna if you're gonna do them
you gotta you gotta let me
let me turn this up then i had this ready for you i thought that was pretty
clever no you know what i can't
turn it up anymore it's already it's fine it's up it doesn't matter you know
what i hear them anyway
after everything i say that i i don't hear voices but i hear rim shots all day
long do you hear applause
when you do your laundry or do something basic that that seems just as
important as the thing that you
did on stage oh everything the toilet uh sex i there's i can increase uh i have
a potentiometer
nobody knows what that is i don't think but it's a radio shack device but that's
gone
radio shacks gone ah but cover didn't cause it they just nobody needed diodes
anymore man i was bummed
about that i i i love walking around that in fact uh in upstate new york where
we were before here the
last one in in all of new york state was still down the road so i just went and
walked around it like
an old man all the time i just it makes me feel good i love radio shack i'm so
bummed i loved it
i built stuff did you build stuff no i never did i just i like to put together
i mean in a way i guess
i did in that i i like to wire together stuff about my stereo or musical
equipment and so right going in
there and you're like wow that could come in handy one day that's a this to
this to this and just to
have it so i i bought everything in the shop and uh it's in storage now
somewhere in nashville tennessee
so your life is in storage in new york as well or is it nashville where most of
it all down to nashville
yeah and people don't know that you you own the capital records studio there
for a while
uh with the rca studio a now this is why i don't i don't fact check because
this way i can come off
incredible rim shot please oh thanks i don't fact check um it was the rca
recording studio yeah i mean we
can check snopes but i i think that uh uh it was 15 years i had uh i had the rcaa
room and um
interestingly because the owners of that they were the people who like chet atkins
estate and owen bradley
and like absolute legends of country music that made the business there their
estates still owned the place
and i was renting it and they always had the plan to to demolish it to sell and
demolish it something
about being the people that made all the history in there they didn't see it as
important as it as it
actually uh was so i found myself sort of an oddly publicly embattled with
these uh uh with these legends
to save the studio that they built uh because they wanted to mow it down so for
15 years uh when i was
in there uh they really discouraged my talking about its historical historic
value because um they wanted
people to forget about that it was kind of bizarre but i love the place it's
not like the current cancel
history politics it's it's why would they want you to cancel the music that was
so legendary and then and
the people that made it well it's complicated but you know the the simple
answer is that uh you know
their estates their grandchildren grand great grandchildren they they wanted
them to be set
you know for life they wanted them to have money and there was more money to be
made by selling that
studio letting it be demolished and then and then they you know they could
erect a massive um um
uh condominium complex which is what they were trying to do my argument was
that it it was of more value to
nashville and music history in general to have this place um you know still
there so that people could
record in it see it um and we had a solution to purchase it through uh through
some you know it's it's a
long story but it's right you know basically what i get out of it now is that
you know i always tried
to see their side i mean because basically you have the uh the the legends of
country music trying to
wipe out their legacy uh building there this is to make money so they could
have one of the biggest
studios in the world um and then this little fellow here trying to trying to
save it but they felt like
the music was what was important and not the building right yeah and you loved
recording there right i
loved recording there and i also just think that uh they don't make studios
like that anymore and so
many of them were torn down people will travel the world to record in it uh and
it also provides uh uh
you know it's a it's a landmark in a place like nashville which is supposed to
be music city
not condo city that that's it's it's there because of of that they can build
the condos two doors down
i mean they don't have to wipe that place out interestingly after we sort of
you know won this
n a uh and and the uh the national trust that puts together the list of
important architecture in the
country made it on their list of like 10. so it's it's an important uh piece of
architecture and the
reason it stands out is because it's terrible architecture it wasn't saved on
basis of its
importance as a as a piece of you know brick it's it's because of the human
beings that inhabited it
that made it great so that's why it's on the list anyway does it yeah i had
that for a long time now
i've just still exist does does it exist still yes it does and um uh there's a
famous producer uh owns
it now and uh and they still make loads of records from there they've every
year the place is racked
up it's grammys and country music and it's still more importantly it's a uh it's
it's sort of a
flagship for that neighborhood which is called music row so that the rest of
music row has you know kind
of a capital as it were so i mean i'm proud that it's still there and you saved
it ben you saved it
with a lot of other people yeah yeah that was yeah but i mean you're there's
many things i love about
you and uh one is uh you're very handsome um your heart is huge i mean you
should see a doctor it's it's
oversized thank you and uh the other thing is you you're crusader for justice
just in your nature and
so you kind of are and it happens when you perform sometimes there's a rebellious
nature to you that
of course i'm i was incredibly drawn to the moment i first heard your music and
then i fanned out and
hid behind a speaker uh with my daughters to meet you at the l ray yeah i
remember that very clearly
that's now a long time ago it's so long ago it's weird it's like 20 years ago
it's 20 years ago and
and brick was the theme song of my divorce um and uh it was obviously the song
today is is pretty
relevant actually it's not a song that that would get cancelled i don't think
because it's so heartfelt
difficult if people understand it i don't think people understand sarcasm or
some viewpoints of
stories anymore which is i don't want to see that happen yeah i mean i it's i
think there's the same
i mean i think when when we when we make a statement or make art or anything
that has nuanced subtlety
we've always known it was going to be misunderstood by a certain number of
people i just think now that
that number is is is is pretty loud and there's no there's no proper court for
it which i think is too
bad because i i i do think sometimes maybe it is worth talking about you know
you shouldn't have said
that or that's not that's not nice i mean that's that's fine it's just i i
think i object to the meanness
and the lock and step of some of the court that you see sometimes um but i
always that doesn't hurt my
feelings that something would be misinterpreted it always bothers me that if we
