This is a really special episode.
I always say that because it always is for me.
And it's Jonathan Silverman, one of my dearest friends of my whole life.
He was actually the minister of my wedding to my wife.
He was acting on Broadway when he was 18 years old.
In Neil Simon play, after Neil Simon play.
And he's been in so many movies.
Of course, you all know him from the amazing, legendary Weekend at Bernie's,
where he and Andrew McCarthy loaded a Bernie into vehicles
and just took him everywhere, and he was dead.
So he's also been in so many television shows.
He's in one right now that will be coming out in September called Moonshine,
which is made through the CBC, the same people,
the same companies that made Schitt's Creek and distributed it.
That's where he'll be airing.
And then it'll be on a streamer, of course, everywhere soon after that,
and we'll find out where that'll be.
And he's on a show right now on NBC called Good Girls,
so you can see him on that.
He's been acting his whole life.
He is one of the sweetest, most caring.
Honestly, if you have a friend like Jonathan Silverman,
you're living a good life.
He's a brother to me, so please welcome my friend.
Here he is, Jonathan Silverman.
Hi.
Johnny.
Hi, Bobby.
What do I do?
You're here.
Look at you.
Look at you in front of an espresso machine, I think.
Uh, it's an espresso machine or a piano.
Oh.
And all of my wife's Emmy Awards.
Oh, you did everything right.
I got this much.
I got tchotchkes behind me.
You got lots of tchotchkes.
Literally.
Can you come say hi to Bob?
Jennifer Finnegan.
Oh, that's not Jennifer Finnegan.
Hello, Ella.
Did I lose the volume, though?
There you are.
So, hi, it's Bob.
It's Uncle Bob.
You love me.
How are you?
Very good.
You like me, right?
Mm-hmm.
Good.
Well, that's important.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Is Bob beautiful or cute?
Cute.
You're cute.
Thank you.
You're adorable.
Yeah.
Say thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I love you.
Tell your mommy I said my love.
Oranges.
Oranges.
Grilchi sandwich.
Grilchi sandwich.
Grilchi sandwich.
Okay.
She's going to go take her nap now.
I love you, Uncle Bob.
Love you.
You want to blow my kiss?
Good.
Bye.
I have no idea who that was.
Oh, my God.
Jen looks so young.
She was always young.
And now, you know, it's not kosher.
Oh, so where are you?
Are you home?
I'm home.
This is where we live.
Yes, it is.
I know exactly where you are now.
You've been in this living room many times.
The couch to the left is where Jen's mom received a bunch of gifts.
Correct.
Correct.
Which we don't need to go into.
And the backyard is where you and I passed out and vomited one night.
That's, we did.
And then we were offered.
Maybe we vomited and passed out, in that order.
Correct.
Yes, we didn't hold it inside.
And then we were offered pizza at that moment after we finished keckling.
Yes.
Or what do you call it?
Whatever it is.
I think that is a word.
I love you so much.
I love you, Bobby.
I'm so proud of you.
Look at what you're doing.
I'm doing Zoom.
I'm like, unlike any other human being.
We've known each other so long that I remember you were the one who taught me
what internet
is.
I remember going to your house post-divorce, pre-second half of your life.
Just post-divorce.
And you said, Tony, look at this crazy stuff.
And you've got this computer and you're pressing buttons and you're
communicating with the outside
world.
And I was just fascinated.
And now look at you.
Look at me.
I've got Wi-Fi.
You're king of the internet.
I am.
That would be Howard, I guess.
No.
Yeah, he took over the internet, I guess.
Who knows?
But what I did.
Prince of the internet?
Yeah.
Yeah.
High Priestess.
What I did was wrong.
We're not going to go into it.
But I had dial-up AOL that John Stamos got me free at the time because it was a
demo.
And you dial-up and there was chat rooms.
Right.
There you go.
So, okay, so for people listening or watching, mostly listening, you and I have
been friends
since pre-Metazoic, I think.
Yes, yes.
We met in Israel.
We're on the way to Israel in 1988 or 88.
Hold on.
I just hear people signing off of this podcast.
Yeah.
Actually, it was Palestine back then.
It was before it became-
Everybody's back on now.
Okay.
But we met a long time ago, Bob.
Our mom-
We met on a flight.
Our moms introduced us.
We were taking our parents to the Holy Land.
And my mom was talking to your mom, or perhaps your mom was talking to my mom.
Right.
And one said, have I got a son for your son?
And they met.
We met.
And that was the beginning of a very beautiful love story.
It really, we became friends after that.
And then you went off on a pilgrimage with Jason Alexander and a bunch of
people.
And I didn't get to see you.
And it was like, bye.
Maybe best friend.
I think at the time, there were only two tours going for the crazy American
tourists.
And whenever you would be going up Mount Masada, we would just be coming down
Mount Masada.
Whenever you would be in the Dead Sea, we would just be finishing our float
slash swim.
But yeah, then we reconnected, God, within the year.
And one thing led to another.
As single men in clubs.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And not in a sexual way.
No.
Just in a brotherly way.
And that was it.
We adopted each other.
And what was interesting to me was I had seen you, I think, twice on Broadway.
And one was I'm Not Rappaport, correct?
No, but I have seen it on Broadway.
But I have said that to you for all the years I've known you.
You thought I was Rappaport?
You thought I was Judd Hirsch.
I've always thought you were Judd Hirsch and Ozzy Davis.
No, but I literally always say to you, you were great and I'm Not Rappaport.
Thank you.
And so I don't want people to think that I'm just misinformed.
I'm just, I'm a moron.
I'm going to do a revival of I'm Not Rappaport one day.
With Michael Rappaport.
With Michael Rappaport.
With Michael Rappaport.
And I'm going to say, I'm not Rappaport.
I'm going to show up, you know, your review before opening night and said, Bob
Saget said
I was terrific in this performance.
I did Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound on Broadway.
And I saw Broadway Bound and I saw Brighton Beach.
And you were exquisite.
Oh, Bobby.
No, I'm telling you.
I didn't know you, but I wanted to be friends with you because I thought, oh,
that's a guy
I would have been friends with as a kid, but didn't know.
And then you had many years of show business.
What was the youngest you were on Broadway?
18.
You were, you looked young.
I looked very young.
I looked very young.
I still, I still, I still know.
Now I look 10 years older.
Now I look 10 years older than you.
No, you don't.
You look fantastic.
I was definitely a late bloomer.
So I didn't even start growing until I was maybe 16, 17 years old.
So by the time I was 18 doing that play, I think the character was 15.
And then God bless Neil Simon, who gave me every break any actor could ever
wish for and
was so kind.
He put me in three of his Broadway plays and five of his movies.
But in a short period of time, he had me play versions of himself in this
trilogy, both
on stage and on film.
When I was, say, between 18 and 22, 23, I was playing versions of him aged
between 15
and 25, 26.
So in a short amount of time, I had to figure out how to play younger, play
older.
And it was all makeup.
It's amazing, though, because we're talking about America's greatest comedy
playwright.
And here he is wanting you for all of this.
And you got to spend time with Neil Simon?
I spent a lot of time with him.
He was a lovely man.
And I still don't know why he was so good to me, but he was so kind.
So I saw you in all these plays.
And then I saw that's why Neil Simon was so great, because if you had an
upbringing similar
to what he was showing you in his work, you went, oh, I know those people.
I am those people.
I went through that.
And though it might be a small group of people in the world, it still hits
family.
And it hits relationships.
And I saw you and went, wow, I could have been friends with this man, this kid.
I mean, I was 10 years old.
I was 28.
You were 18.
You were so good.
You were so good from the get-go.
Literally.
And you were always humble about it.
What is that?
You don't have that confidence that everyone on the internet is telling us all
to have.
Right.
I don't know.
I don't know why I've never sort of been boastful and obnoxious.
I think-
Not that.
Not that.
But you're always, you have a sweet apology about something when you know.
But you've told me, yeah, that was a good one.
I mean, I know when I'm in crappy movies and soon-to-be-cancelled television
series.
That's part of the game.
Yeah, sure.
I know when I'm also gifted a beautiful role and feel like I'm at the top of my
game.
And that certainly feels wonderful.
But then there's those jobs where you think it's fantastic and then you watch
it and you
cringe.
And then there's been a couple of jobs that you think, oh my God, this is just
a paycheck
gig.
And why am I even here?
And it somehow comes together beautifully.
So I've given up trying to figure things out.
And I basically just say yes to anything that comes my way if I could fit it in.
That would be the dog movie on DVD.
You spent a year.
I've done a few dog movies on DVD, Bob.
I've taken over the late, great Charles Grodin in the Beethoven franchise.
And yeah, I've done two of those Beethoven movies and just another one, just to
throw it in.
I did a completely different dog movie.
I think it was a talking dog movie.
You never know.
You never know.
Believe me, carrying around a dead body for a couple of months.
I never thought that would be a successful movie and it's still on.
We want the dirt because everybody in the world knows that movie.
It is a piece of culture.
It's a piece of something.
It is a piece of culture.
It's still hilarious because the premise, you guys committed to it.
And it's not that easy to commit to that.
You and Andrew McCarthy, you go and explain to me how that came about, how it
was presented to you, who t
