Susie Essman and Bob Reminisce About Stand-Up Comedy and Discuss Her Work on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”

Hey, yo, it's Bob, and it's another episode of Bob Saget's here for you. Of
course,
gotta say it, be professional somewhat. And my guest is somebody that I have
loved for,
I don't know, long damn time. 35, 40, I don't know how many years, 140. No, she's
not that old.
Susie Essman, the hilarious, wonderful, adorable Susie Essman, who you all know
is Susie Green
on Curb Your Enthusiasm. And she's going to tell us a whole lot of stuff about
Curb and Larry David
and Jeff Garland. And we're going to talk about the series and the people that
she cares about the
most and how much fun it is to make it. Because season 11 is coming up on HBO,
HBO Max, in the
fall, which is soon. I think it's September. I don't know. I read somewhere
December, but it's coming.
And you'll know. And there's 10 new episodes. And I just know it's, I can't
wait to see it.
Because it's wonderful to laugh and watch something as brilliant as that show.
Because it just is
brilliant. Because it's Larry David with the best ensemble that pretty much
exists for me, except for
all the other shows that I love. But I sure do love Curb. And who doesn't,
right? If you don't,
what? If you're real young and you haven't watched Curb, you got 10 seasons to
catch up on. But I've
known Susie from the stand-up years. And she was always hilarious and still is.
And she's a sweetheart.
She is a damn sweetheart. Do what you do with this thing. You know what to do.
You rate, review,
subscribe. Listen to the sponsors that are in between. You know, they're here
for you.
Oh, wait. That's the name of the show? No. Because there is a podcast called
Here For You. This is Bob
Saget's Here For You. So different. Because my name's attached. Anyway, you can
also follow it if you,
you know, if you subscribe and follow instead of listen. Because that's a
different platform.
Or you can go to bobsaget.com. Sorry. That's my website to see my stand-up
dates. That's right.
I did it subliminally. I'm on tour. So go to bobsaget.com and see where I'm
coming,
working on all new stuff. And it's fun as hell. The shows have never been this
much fun in my life
because I have a purpose to make people happy after what we've all been going
through.
And so the other thing is, if you want to see it on YouTube, this stuff and the
two shot of Zoom,
which is incredible television, you go to youtube.com slash bobsaget and you'll
be able to
hit videos and you will see all of the episodes. And you can subscribe to that
on the YouTube page as
well. So I look forward to hearing from you. I look forward to this episode.
Enjoy. Here comes Suzy Esmond.
So Suzy, you are in your apartment in New York?
No, I'm in my house outside of New York.
What's the address?
You're sneaky, Sagalicious.
Oh, that's how I do it. That's just the only reason I do a podcast is to get
into your home.
Well, I would tell you. I'm just not telling all your millions of listeners.
That's true. That's a bad, bad thing to do. Then I'd be the J.B. Smoove in your
life.
Everybody could find out where you live. I mean, everybody could find out.
Everybody knows your social security number. Everybody knows everything about
you.
You could do it right through, I guess, Verizon or AT&T. They can literally
know where you are.
Exactly.
What a nice paranoid way to start this off.
I assume nobody gives a shit about me. I assume that nobody really cares. So I'm
not that paranoid.
That's not true. I think because of your standup and who you've been, and I've
known you for a really
long time. I mean, we, we've known each other for decades and decades.
I'm older than you. I'm 65.
I'm older than you. I'm 66. Ha ha.
How'd you do that?
I don't know. I just was born in 1955.
My grandmother. It seems like only yet. Oh, that sounds like Jeff Garland.
Jeff Garland always brings up my grand, his grandmother or whatever.
Well, I know. But you know, I told him recently, he's always talking like, he'll
always make a joke
about, well, that my granddaughter. And it used to be, well, that was not
plausible. And I said
recently, I was like, Jeff, you're too old to make that a joke. Cause you could
have a granddaughter
right now.
You really could.
Guess what? I'm a grandma. I'm Bubby.
I knew that.
Congratulations.
Yeah. Five months old.
That is the cutest.
So cute.
And is it better to be a grandparent than a parent?
Of course it is.
Of course it is. Parenting is, you know, I mean, I brought up teenagers. It's a
night, you know,
I don't have to tell you. They're great, but it's the drama and stuff. And she's
just a sweet
little baby. She was here the other day. I didn't have to change her diaper. I
didn't have to feed
her. Her mother did everything. And then she went home and it was a delight.
And then I can't
spoil her and take her to the theater and the Nutcracker suite at Christmas and
all that stuff.
And then you send her home.
And it's good. And you put, you'll put a mask on her.
Yeah, probably. It depends. It seems like it's never ending.
We just did a show at the Wiltern. We opened it in L.A. after, since March 2020.
And it was the
first night of masks mandate back in L.A. Where are you guys at with that?
I don't think there's a mask mandate here. There's not. But certain stores, you
walk in and they
say, wear your mask. And I wear my mask when I go into public spaces anyway,
indoors, even though
I've been vaccinated. I just want that booster. I want the fucking booster.
I want it too. Are they making it?
I don't know. I don't know.
We, I want, I would get a vaccination every day.
Remember, remember in the beginning though, like, was it last, I'm losing my
mind. Was it last
January when we were all desperate to find, and you were under 65. I was
already 65. We were all
desperate to find the vaccine and going on websites at four o'clock in the
morning. And
now everybody can get it, which is a wonderful thing.
It is, except for people that don't want to get it.
Yeah. Yeah.
But that's, I'm trying in, in standup because I'm on a hardcore tour because I
really feel
like I have something to offer now, which is one, bring people together,
entertain them,
not preach. Although I do anyway, subliminally, but just it's, it's the first
mature standup
I think I've ever done.
What's the, what's the, what is it? What's the nature of it?
It's just more about trying to be positive through this stuff.
And still I'm talking about the same stuff, you know, but it's more about, you
know, the
older person stuff, you know.
Do you feel your persona has changed?
No, it's the same persona. I'll, I'll, I'll get on stage and still lecture
people. You know,
you stay away from farm animals. Those are God's creatures. You know, those
weird things. My dad
used to say that kind of stuff, but I, and I have new songs that are meaningful
to this one song
called, I don't do negative. And it's just about, and it ends up with a bunch
of dick jokes. So it,
it's right. So I'm able to be funny, irreverent, and yet have a positive
message. I think that's
what I'm working on.
Are people still shocked when, when you're blue?
No, no. They've seen enough specials right now. Okay.
Yeah. And they're, they're used to it. They're disappointed. I'm not as blue as
I was now.
I know that feeling.
Right. Cause you, when I met you at Catch, I mean, I met you a long time. You
were young.
In 1985, 84.
Yep.
Something like that.
Yep.
Were you on the morning program that I was on, on CBS? I think you were. On Marriott
Hartley
and Rollin Smith on CBS.
I don't remember. I remember them, but I, I was your, I interviewed you.
Probably.
Yeah. I don't remember either. That's where we're at.
You know, I remember there was a point when I no longer had to lie on my resume.
And every now and then I'll go look just out of curiosity on IMDB. I'm like, I
did all that.
I don't remember any of it. I mean, I remember curb of course, but like there
was so many things,
so many standup things, those little, you know, standup spotlight and this, I
don't remember any of it.
Me either.
It's all a blur.
But that's normal, I guess. I mean, you know, we just always, you have the tenacity
and that's,
what's so amazing about what you do on curb because it was a part literally
made for you.
Um, and it's, you know, I made it, he made it, Larry, we made it together.
Of course.
Right.
But you know, what's interesting that in, uh, this is, we just finished season
11.
We've been doing this for 21 years.
In 21 years, Larry and I have never discussed the character or the relationship.
We've never had a discussion about it. There's always just been this dialogue
of the unconscious going on that he knew what I was doing and wrote towards it.
And I knew what he wanted and gave him more. And we just, but we've never
analyzed it, discussed it. Not even like a tiny little bit.
Well, that's because the fit is so perfect. And when he started, I met him
before he did Fridays on ABC. Did you know him back then?
No, because I didn't start doing standup till 19, the end of 1983. So really
1984. So I didn't meet him till probably 85, 86. Yeah.
And he was always obviously one of the funniest people alive.
Yeah. Well, he is. I mean, you know, he's just, I mean, do you remember what
his old standup used to be like? It was, it was brilliant.
And just, we would all go in the room and watch him because he was volatile.
And, you know, one woman would look at her watch. He'd be killing it. He'd
storm off the stage.
And, you know, it was, I was standing next to him at the improv in LA. I had a
guitar on. I was strictly a guitar act when I was 22 years old.
He's standing next to me. There's a prop comedian on stage. He's watching this.
He goes, I can't believe this.
The people are laughing at this. This is the worst thing. Why would they laugh
at this? This guy is, they're asinine.
These people don't deserve me. And then I'm standing there and he goes, you
know what they want? They want guitar acts.
And I'm standing, the cut too would be, I'm holding a guitar.
He's seeing you with the guitar.
Oh, it's so sad. And then he got on stage and he did a great joke. I'm trying
to remember it. They didn't laugh.
And he went, you know what? You people don't deserve me. Fuck you people.
And he left. I've seen him do that a million times.
This is what, you know what he used to do to me? Because I used to MC a lot at
Catch. I was like, you know, the house MC.
And, you know, that point where, ladies and gentlemen, here's Larry David and
you're crossing.
And he used to always whisper to me. Because when you were MC, that was your
time.
He had a 15 minute spot. You go to the bathroom. You go out to the bar.
That was, he would always say to me, stay close. He would whisper in my ear.
I couldn't leave the room.
I've always, I've never had long conversations with him, but I've known him
forever. He's always stood in a circle. He's always been smiling at me. He
never gave me the look, which is persona.
He likes you. He likes you. If he's smiling at you, he likes you.
Right. But then he would just try to figure me out. Like he does in the
character a bit. That's the, obviously the multiplied times 10 version.
But I walked into a restaurant in LA and he was having a dinner with Marty
Short. And I walked in and as loud as he could, he went, Bob Saget, ladies and
gentlemen, Bob Saget.
I was like, oh my God. It's the Hollywood prank.
He only does that to people he loves.
It made me happy, actually.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So now how the hell did all this start? You were a standup for so long.
Right.
Oh, I was, um, standup. Oh God. Standup. Uh, it was 2000, in 1999. I had
started, I've been doing standup since 84, let's say. And, um, I mean, I was
getting this gig and that gig and a little bit here and a little bit there and
I was making a living, but nothing was happening.
You know, nothing was, nothing was clicking. And, and I, I remember just
feeling like, I, I don't know. I don't know how much better I could be. I mean,
I was just,
on stage killing every night. I had hilar
