Sam Morril Talks Comedy Under Difficult Circumstances, His Self-Produced Specials & “Full Capacity”

Hey everybody, it is Bobby Saget here. This is Bob Saget's here for you. It's a
podcast that I
love doing. Yeah, because nobody else has a podcast except every person
listening to this.
So I hope you're having a good beginning of a new week. The world's crazy, a
little bit fucked up,
but that would be the world right now. But I'm wishing you good stuff, you know,
and I'm trying to put out positiveness. And I've been reaching out to comedians,
and they've been reaching out to me. It's just what happens sometimes. And
there's this gentleman
that I was told about through my publicist, and then I didn't even think about
it, when I would
put him on and how. And then he reached out to me because he played someplace
that I played on the
road. And then we kind of, it just happened. It was just a weird, synchronicitous
thing. And his name
is Sam Morrell. And he's incredibly talented. He's very real and really funny.
And he talks about
things like mental health and physical health and just his life and dating and
honesty. And he's just
incredible. I just think he's great. And then I started looking him up at sammorrell.com,
which is S-A-M. That'd be the Sam part. And then Morrell is M-O-R-R-I-L. So it's
Sam, M-O-R-R-I-L.com.
I'm B-O-B-S-A-G-E-T.com. I'm laughing alone. It's really sad. But he reached
out to me on Twitter
direct message without realizing that his peeps or my peeps or whatever were
connecting us. And I just
got another person in my life, which is really a good feeling right now because
we're also disconnected
from certain people. And then you go, I got enough friends. Well, you know what?
I don't because he is
just one special damn guy. So you want to see his stuff. You want to see full
capacity special that
he did. He puts out his specials. He's a self-made person. His work ethic is
huge. He just loves stand
up. And he wanted to put out his specials and he put them on YouTube. And he
did an up on the roof
one, which he did as everybody came back from the pandemic on the New York
comedy scene. And it's
quite wonderful and real. And there's a lot of people that you know, a lot of
New York based comics that
are really important and special. And then I got this. I just loved it. I just
recommend this special. So
it's there. And you can see it on YouTube. And you can see it at Sam Morale.com.
So I hope you enjoy
it. We're about to bring him into the I'm about to admit him into the zoom room.
You know what it's
like. You hit admit. And then they're in your room in zoom. So you want to rate,
review, subscribe. I'm
telling you that's what you want to do. You might not want to right now, but
you want to rate, review
and subscribe to this podcast. Or you can follow it if that's how you're
listening to it. That's
different. Or you can follow it on YouTube at, you know, youtube.com slash Bob
Saget. And this is
a really nice conversation with a person that I have a lot of respect for. He's
35 years old. Holy shit.
And he's, he's really wise. And he's just a really, I just, here's Sam Morale.
You came up just wanting to be a stand up. Like from the get go. Yeah, I mean,
the guys I always
liked. I mean, I was always, you know, a New York guy. So I mean, obviously, I
love
Dangerfield, Carlin Pryor, the obvious ones, but like, you know, rock,
obviously, David
Tell was had such a big impact on me because I remember seeing him in high
school and being
like, this guy's a genius. Like I'd never seen anyone be. He reminded me of Rodney
a little
bit and how it was just like relentless punchlines. It was, but it tell was so
different, you know,
and, and kind of hip and cool. I thought in this kind of grungy way, I loved it.
So, and
he had mystique. So many comics now have like, they just bare their souls in a
way that's like,
you know, it can be fascinating, but sometimes it's just, it's a substitute for
funny. It's like,
you know, I was molested. You're like, cool. You still got to have a joke. You
know, you still
got to say something funny. That's not a bad button for it. I was molested. I
actually, I was
molested, but I, you know what? I need a joke now. Yeah. I was molested. Okay.
Where's this
going though? I need something. I need some more. Yeah. Um, I, so I loved how
Dave was just
relentless with punchlines, you know, guys like in the city, like Greg Gervaldo
were so
relentless with God, his losses shitty. Well, his, his social commentary I
thought was just like
so good because he was so intelligent, but it was always, uh, it was always so
funny. Like he never
got preachy. He edited enough to keep it from getting annoying. Yeah. Cause he
was such a joke
writer. It influence in a tell. I didn't even think of a tell being an
influence on you until now.
And it makes sense. I used to open for him and he was, he was so cool to me.
Right. He's such a good guy.
I think the really good people pretty much are. Yeah. I haven't met a lot of
douchebags that
are, um, at the top of the game. And sometimes if they are, it's only because
they got other
shit on their mind. For sure. But you have, you have like a good heart. Where'd
that come
from? Why are you a good person? Um, why do you have a conscience? My parents
are good
people. I think that helps, you know, uh, you know, my mom is so fucking
anxious. She's like
the most anxious woman ever. So, uh, you know, you go through periods where you
act out, but
she was, when you have good parents, you kind of, at some point do turn into
them a little
bit. So I think like, I wouldn't say I'm a good person, but I do, you know,
they're good
people. So I do, I have, I have some of some of them in me.
Why would you say you're not a good person? I mean, you're saying the weird
thing to say
about yourself. I'm a good, I don't know. That's a suspect that you're not, if
you say
that or anyone who broadcasts it loudly. Like I remember seeing a guy in a tee
in a sweatshirt
that said feminist. And I was like, I bet you're a fucking pedophile. You know
what I mean?
I bet you're like, I bet you're a rapist. I bet you're whenever someone's
broadcasting,
just like really good stuff about themselves. Yeah. I've done it by mistake
because I've been
attacked. So I go, I'm a good person guy. And then I go, why did I say that?
Cause that
just, it's like, it's, it's don't take a lot of, isn't it? When you say I'm a
good person
is almost always like in the defense of something. So I don't, that's like
where we're at too.
We're at a place where we're under attack, no matter what I'm ready for
something. And then
I'm, I'll let my guard down. I'm on tour now. Cause I want to do a special and
I'm on,
I'm hard hitting it. And I'm like any moment, somebody could be angry over
nothing or angry
over something. And they go, Oh fuck. Why did I say that? Do you find this? You're
constantly
working out new stuff, right? Yeah. Always. You know, it's funny. You say that
as people get mad,
like comedians have some responsibility to say the right thing. I'm like, dude,
we got good at this telling jokes in a bar. Like at what point did you think we
were going to be the
voice of reason for society? I think Jon Stewart fucked us all over because,
because he was such
a, he was such a voice of reason and he's also so damn funny. Right. You know,
then that people got
the idea that comedy should be like saying the right thing rather than the
funny thing. And I think,
I think like you said to me, you're a good person. It's like, yeah, but that
shouldn't be what you
lead with to me. You know, I think that's valuable. And I also think there's
some comedians that are not
good people that have done shitty stuff and then maybe they get canceled, but
that's just,
that's sure. Sure. Sometimes being a good person is important, but also like, I'm
not watching a
movie like, man, that Tom Cruise is a good guy. Like I'm watching, you know, I'm
watching for
entertainment. Right. Right. Right. So, um, yeah, some people, by the way, some
people,
and I'm sure you've talked to people that go, did you ever meet who famous have
you met or you were on
a show and they saw that you met somebody and your mother or some relative goes,
are they nice?
Yeah. I was asking if they're nice. And I got to a point where it doesn't
matter if they're nice.
Do you like their work? Sure. But also when you, when you say a comedian is
nice, that's basically
saying they suck. People say I'm nice. When you're like, that guy's a really
good guy. You're like,
well, you would have said he was funny if he was, you know, I must be fucking
horrible.
I'm the worst comic ever. Cause I go, Oh, sag it. He's a good guy. And then
people would know he's
not. You've been doing it. You've been doing it long enough that no, everyone's,
everyone says
you're a good guy. Everyone says you're a, said you're a good person. And for
how long you've been
doing that, that's valuable. That makes me terrible. Really terrible. I'm
exponentially horrific.
So did, did, how old were you when you, when you did, when you said, I got to
do this?
So you're drinking the non cars 18. Yeah. I was 17. Wow. I didn't. Did I ask
you when a man
touched you or when you started doing standup? I was 16. I went, uh, no, I, uh,
no. Was he a club owner?
I, no, I, I started 18 at the comic strip in New York city. Uh, I was in high
school still.
And a bunch of kids came out to see me that from high school and, uh, they all
laughed.
So I did well. I was terrible. I, I'd done open mic right before that. And I
bombed so hard.
I was awful. But, uh,
Which you have to do. I mean, everybody's like, I like it sometimes now I enjoy
it because I know
that there's no way I won't get out of it. I will get out of it. Even if I have
to tap dance
with some crowd pleasing thing that I know is there in my arsenal or something
that I'm,
why do I have to do this? Why is this where we're at right now? Do you feel
like that now?
Do you feel that you can not bomb all the time? I know bombing's good. You know,
if you never bomb,
you never, it means you never write. Like there's some comics who have like a
perfect 45 minute set.
And those are the comics that if they hear someone do a similar bit to them,
lose their mind.
And I'm like, well, if I keep writing and someone, someone's going to yank one
of my bits, it's,
there's the internet. It's, it's just happens of course. So if you keep writing
new stuff,
you won't be too attached to the stuff that inevitably will get yanked.
Well, you have a wisdom. That's right. You're, you're 34, 35.
Fuck. Um, you have a wisdom that most that I didn't have. And I, I got sucked
into the world of,
commercial television, which is a gift. And then people would go,
I grew up on you. Sorry. I didn't think you would watch that. You watch the
video show. Probably.
I don't know. I watched full house when I was a kid. Of course. Yeah. I
remember seeing it. I was
probably reruns when I was a kid, but it was, uh, but yeah, I mean, I, yeah, I
watched it all the
time. Of course he's gotten heaven. A lot of people, a lot of at the time, uh,
the way that it felt for me,
a lot of guys watched me on the video show and a lot of girls watched full
house. So I don't know
if there's anything you want to tell me about yourself right now. I'm a woman
trapped inside
a man's body. And by the way, who isn't? Yeah. Yeah. Everything we say can get
canceled. It's
unbelievable. It's just, I'm riffing. And I also, no, but that's the thing too,
is like, that's,
but that's not true because, uh, I don't, I don't buy it. I think, I think
people, yeah,
everyone's going to have people come after him at some point, but how much of
it really sticks? I mean,
I don't know. It has to be real. I mean, it has to be, I do think like certain
people get like,
I get nervous about that. Like one size fits all condemnation system where like
you see someone like
Shane Gillis on the same cancellation list as like bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein.
You're like, yeah,
this isn't fair. This is like an SAT question, which one does
