now on hbo max that just came out and it's called fighting words and there's a
photograph of it and
she is um incredibly special she is she's been around for a while uh friends
with tiffany haddish and
tiffany and wanda sykes helped her along the way uh find her voice and and got
her a half hour on
television before uh with other fine comedians but her own half hour and then
it led to this hbo max
special that's out right now fighting words i cannot recommend it more highly
it's funny it's poignant
it's got love in it she retraces her past uh you definitely want to watch this
and stay to the very
end and watch that last 10 15 minutes where she goes home and visits um her dad
that she never met
and it's real and it's one take and it's pretty special so ida rodriguez is
about to talk to me
i'm just going to tell you the business of the day which everybody tells you on
every single podcast
which is to rate review subscribe uh you can follow it you can you can watch it

lot of things if you're not nice you can you know i'm not going to say that
that'd be rude um this will
be a pretty pg conversation so anybody can listen to this episode i'm not going
to be having like
gilbert godfried dropping f-bombs uh what else can i tell you um i've got some
uh advertisers you want
to listen to they're they're decent products i like them uh you know that's

but go to bobsaget.com
and you get tickets to both of those shows uh i have a feeling it's gonna be a
crazy party
at the hard rock live in orlando i haven't been there for years and i'm really
excited to go back
there and then i'm literally hitting every city i'm doing a bunch of theaters i'm
doing the wilbur in
boston in march and i'm doing uh foxwoods in connecticut in march and then i'm
doing a bunch
of clubs as well because i'm working on all new materials so it's it's all new
stuff i mean if you
need to hear me sing you know from my hbo special my dog licked my balls i will
do that if it's
necessary you do what you have to do for the people but otherwise it's it's all
new stuff it's like 90
minutes of crazy stuff i'm running a bunch of my dates i'll have my buddy mike
young with me and then i
have other fine comedians as well and some of them are an evening with i just
get out there and get to
be with the audience and loving it so much honest to god this is you wouldn't i've
never experienced
stand-up i was talking to my agent today i know you want this story because it's
always so heartfelt to
hear a story that starts with i was talking to my agent today and i said have
you ever heard me say this
he says no you have never loved stand-up more and uh that's where i'm at at my
in my life and i'm
about to bring someone right now onto the podcast who's my guest today she is
someone that's going to
be around a long time and i can't wait to see the next stuff she does she's
incredibly special she's
also got a new show she's developing for hbo max and the specials on hbo max
and it's called fighting
words uh here we go i'm letting into the zoom room because anybody can make a
tv show with a split screen
here is ida rodriguez hi ida how are you i'm doing well how are you i'm good i'm
really good it's really
now have we met am i so stupid have we met at the clubs in la um it was brief
one time and you were kind
so um but that's my that's my mo i try i try to be kind because i've i i get it
you know you're so
it's so nice of you to do this thank you no thank you for having me i'm so
thankful to be here it's
interesting because i feel like um i hope you have seven hours because i have a
lot to talk to you about
yeah yeah right we don't have lives um it's you're so you're so um damn i mean
you know you've been
through i've been through stuff more than i look like i look like you're you
know a dental assistant
or something but but you also don't look like you've when people go on profile
we all profile people
and you talk about that so much and it's so refreshingly but you've been
through i know a few
people that have been through stuff similar but jesus you have been through
just craziness
and and yet you're you're your special is so good it's just i just i love it i
mean i i i everybody
needs to watch it i'll be talking about it a lot but fighting words on hbl max
is i even have a
picture of you like i always you know that's how beautiful you are oh wow thank
you so much it looks
really good on this piece of piece of we went to a lot to figure out uh which
what the key art was gonna
be and it's so funny because i i remember i i saw one uh and they had like a
statue of christopher
columbus standing behind like oh my and i was like maybe not the one with
christopher columbus in it
right right like that that too woke or not woke and uh history or not history
we don't know what
the hell's going on right now we're so screwed up as a world yeah yeah but you
have an ability to do
something a lot of people do they'll come out and they'll talk about their life
their struggles
but it'll end up reinforcing the stereotype and and you know all that you you
yours is not yours is
honest and it's done with dignity and it's funny you're just damn funny which
is
the biggest gift of all so thank you you know i think that um comedians can be
really smart you know
and i'm sorry i don't follow well you know we also can be very dumb but i think
that's me all of us
every single one of us right we we run back and forth on the spectrum i i just
thought that it was
important to be honest about some of the things because you know the world
everybody is so indignant
everybody feels like they get it everybody has the i the they have to take they
have the right take
everyone um has something to say and has an opinion and the reality of it is is
that we're all messed up
you know we all care about what other people think and at the end of the day we
just want somebody to love
us and um and the bet the best thing the best tool we can have to try to get
anything accomplished in life
is empathy and for me that was like the biggest my grandmother gave me that
gift at a very young age
and that's why i'm not bitter like i even with my own father like i just i just
wanted to tell the truth
i wanted to normalize that experience i wanted people to see how our jokes come
to life sometimes because
you know people that are funny that work at costco they're the funniest guy at
costco they think
they can just jump on stage and do what we do right and they don't realize
there's a process into that goes into
how we mine our comedy and where where our stuff comes from so i just wanted to
combine all of those things
and just try to find some balance because i i'm so tired of the polarization of
people at this and
you know at this time i just feel like we're just in a circus and i i just i
think it's important
to call everybody out if you're going to call people out not just the people
who don't agree with
what you agree with all right well i i'm on literally the same path as you and
and i'm
saying the same stuff and my stand-up is done to bring people together and yeah
they can be
my audience can be a third woke and a third completely conservative to the
right far far right
and then people that are just so high they don't know what's going on
but fun people those are the fun people because they're just rolling they don't
know but you've
done something that i've watched a lot of people do and i know that um tiffany
haddish and wanda sykes
who i've known forever um they kind of you became friends with tiffany and i
became friends with
tiffany well i knew her as an acquaintance when she was 16 or 17 and doing
comedy camp at the laugh factory
oh that's right she lived in her car and you had the same experience you you
and her must have
connected on such a deep level because you and and i've been watching just to
preface it i've been
watching a lot of your interviews i've watched a lot of your stuff and i know
that you've had to repeat
a lot of it but some of it's so worth repeating because the special is definable
and the ending of it
is definable we'll get to that because but but she was homeless and you or
whatever people want to call
that but you you were with two kids right yeah yeah i was and uh she and i
connected on a on a deeper
level absolutely when i first met tiffany she gravitated towards me and she uh
embraced me and she
said i know you're new it's gonna be tough um but i'm here and she was she was
always very kind to me
and when she couldn't get do gigs she would throw them toss them to me because
she would always say i
know somebody who could do it and even though we do very we do different comedy
our comedy is different
right always um just respected me as as within my own voice but yeah we went
through a lot of things
um together and we used to call each other first thing in the morning and just
convince each other
to stay in comedy every week how long ago did that start that friendship so we
started uh we became
friends pretty early when i first started doing stand-up so that that was maybe
about 12 years ago
so we became friends she was one of my first friends in comedy and we we became
friends fast friends
and stayed friends and that was out here in la it was in la yeah so that was
laugh factory
well laugh factory and i wasn't at the laugh factory quite yet i hadn't gotten
past there
right i was doing stand-up wherever i could and yeah she and i met at the cbs
at the audition for
the cbs diversity no i think it was the cbs showcase i don't know if it was a
diversity showcase
at that time right but it was yeah with fern ornstein it was it was the cbs
showcase how many people were
on that um there were quite a they i mean i think it was about 30 i didn't get
it i never i've never
gotten anything from the industry like everything that i've gotten has been
through relationships like
netflix was they ready i think hbo max was the first uh industry thing that i
really got where
it didn't come from a personal relationship with somebody who saw me and said i
want her on this
how did that come about that this really unusual special because you framed it
in a different way
than a lot of people have gone home i mean you know richard i saw your
instagram you look up to richard
i look up to richard that was a and i knew him i mean i got to work with him
and tiffany wanted to be
richard and she's doing it um in her way in her way so you know he went to africa
he went home again
and they filmed some of it but it wasn't you know what you did in in this 12-minute
documentary
at the end of your special it just made it so i i haven't seen it done that way
before and that
so how did they approach you did someone from hbo max contact you so they i got
um i first did my uh
i have a show in development at hbo max so that was what came first i went and
