I'm just an old chonk of coke.
I am a gypsy, sir.
I love Norm Macdonald.
Shoot it all in your face, you fucking cunt!
Yeah, we worked together on Last Comic Standing.
I took the job because I wanted to work with Norm Macdonald.
You fucking whore!
We would joke back and forth with each other.
And it just, it took a little while for us to gel.
You know, that he would say something and I would make fun of it.
And he was like, why is the host making fun of the judge?
Like getting, but we...
Because all Norm ever wanted to do was to make us laugh.
Well, if you're not homophobic, why not whack off your friend that's a gay guy?
He was the gold standard and he will continue to be the gold standard.
We're living in a golden age.
Since you led me on that long walk for autism or whatever the fuck we went on.
I'm sorry for a sandwich.
I remember like me and my buddies in Ohio were all like, yo, did you see this
Norm Macdonald said?
It was on YouTube.
Probably still on there.
He destroyed.
And he even...
Oh, right, right, right.
At the improv.
Right.
Everybody talked about the pandemic.
Yeah, yeah.
Incredible.
It was a cookie jar dunk.
And you could tell it was off the rip.
And it was all that, you know, all the anxiety that the day before the whole
world goes into lockdown.
Yeah.
And he was just on some fuck it.
And it felt so good.
Again, it made me feel like everything's gonna be fine.
I wasn't gonna talk about the coronavirus.
But on the way here, I got really ill.
Norm's like, man, there's a lot of good pussy in here.
And I'm just thinking, well, I guess I just agree with him.
You know, he's getting older and, you know, maybe he has a different perception
of what's attractive.
Are you sure?
I'm like, yeah, man, there sure is.
He goes, fuck, no, there isn't.
Like, he had played me, you know, like, he was like, this is the ugliest batch
of people I've ever seen.
I bet Neil Patrick Harris fucking shoved his cock deep up his asshole.
He, you know, was the fun...
Anybody who had met him, even for a minute, knew he's the funniest guy in the
world.
Sorry, Conan.
But, you know, he is just a force.
He's mad at me because I jizzed all over his face.
There's no one better to talk to about show business than Norm because he's
brutally honest about it.
Whacking off on some fucking guy in front of me and come all over him.
Been thinking about what is it, what is it that made this guy so insanely
different from everyone else?
And I had this recollection that, Andy, you said something once, which was, and
I always remembered it.
It was after a Norm segment, and Norm had annihilated.
He had done really well, as he always did.
And you said to me, "That guy doesn't care in a way that frightens me."
And what you meant was, he had this seeming indifference about whether the
crowd liked it or not.
He was going to do what he was going to do.
And he was so ballsy that you found it kind of scary.
And I knew exactly what you were talking about.
It was always a high wire act.
And one of the things I remember most about Norm is I would start laughing the
minute he came out of the curtain.
So I'd say, "Let's zoom in, Norm Macdonald."
And he would come out, and he had this look in his eye, this glint in his eye.
And I was laughing before he said anything.
Yeah, yeah.
You're a fucking stupid retard.
Big time gambler.
Big time gambler.
Big time gambler.
Yeah.
I know nothing.
I see nothing.
He could make people uncomfortable.
Oh, he was so brilliant.
But the delivery was the best.
Yes.
Just the best.
I'm married, but it's not going well.
Because he delivered in such a way that you thought, this is just coming out of
his head as the word.
But it was all prepared.
A lot of it was prepared anyway.
Give him the boost.
I wonder what cancer you have that you fight for nine years before it gets you.
Don't know.
Man alive.
I don't know, but he did it privately.
Yeah.
That's kind of cool, isn't it?
Yeah, I respect.
Yeah, yeah.
A fucking electric train.
Yeah, he never faltered.
He never capitulated.
He never bent the knee.
No matter how politically correct things got, he was edgy in the 70s and 80s.
He was edgy last week.
What a stalwart of comedy.
What a relentless wit Norm MacDonald was.
No one denied his wit.
Not one, not his worst enemy.
He was one of the most talentless, talented comedians in American history.
For real.
Just like naturally funny.
Naturally funny.
A Canadian.
Yeah.
He was so good in every situation.
And like, I just fucked up and said talentless because I'm imperfect.
I, he never fucked up.
You never saw him be awkward.
And if you did, it was a bit where he was trolling you.
He was really the first troll.
The ultimate troll.
He kind of invented it.
Yeah.
He trolled the weekend update.
Nobody did weekend update like him.
He was like, they, they always were like, dude, that's too much.
I cannot believe he's dead.
Yeah.
How cool of him not to mention his cancer.
Yeah.
So many other movie stars like pray for me here.
I'm just getting out of the hospital.
He was a huge fucking drunk too.
So let me say a couple of words about Norm for God's sakes.
I did feel a closeness to him because he'd been on the show so many times.
Damn.
That's cool.
One of my best friends.
I wish I was friends with somebody.
He's Norm.
He's a legend.
And I always thought it was a big sin that Norm got fired from Saturday Night
Live.
Norm was on Saturday Night Live for five seasons.
He hosted Weekend Update for three years.
He was great at it, you know, with that deadpan delivery.
Here he is delivering a joke, doing the fake news.
And in a related story, this week marked the 5,000th performance of the
Broadway musical Cats.
It also marked the 5,000th time a guy turned to his wife and said, what the
hell is this?
He is a splendid person.
And it's good because otherwise that punch motherfucking goddamn face.
He was so fearless.
He didn't give a fuck who he pissed off or...
Well, I guess that wrecks it.
Also, one of the nicest, most genuine, authentic people.
I've been watching over and over again.
One of my favorite moments of his is in 1998.
If you look it up, January 7th, 1998, he did The Letterman Show.
That is the day that he got fired from Weekend Update.
Right.
And he wouldn't say anything negative.
Letterman did many, many times to him in his face.
But first of all, he was fired.
He still showed up and did this appearance.
You know, if you got fired off your main event, I doubt you would want to...
Promote it.
...and be out in public.
Right.
And that's all they talked about.
And he would not say...
You know, Letterman was going, what kind of idiot would fire you?
No, he's not a very nice man.
He was a nice man.
He just didn't like my...
He would not...
He would not be smirch.
Boring.
With Norm, I didn't need to...
I wasn't worried at all.
I knew that afternoon he would come on the air and kill.
And he did.
Somebody's drilling something up my fucking ass.
He was a great force, I felt, on Saturday Night Live.
Totally.
And he was fired, like, with no dignity.
And the guy who fired him...
Never understood it.
Norm's not funny.
Norm is fucking funny.
Oh, he was...
Oh, man.
He's just...
He's unbelievably funny.
Bombastic Bushka.
How'd you feel when Norm passed away?
Ah...
That was a bummer.
I'm fucking with you, buddy.
Oh, fuck, I got you, you motherfucker.
My sister texted me the day after he died.
And she said, "Do you remember?
I was at the show.
I was maybe 18 years old.
And I was in your office.
You weren't there.
You were rehearsing or meeting or something.
And Norm Macdonald walked in and I introduced myself.
And he sat down and talked to me for an hour.
And asked me questions about myself.
And, you know, and made me laugh a lot.
And she said, "Nobody in your business has done that before or since."
Right, right.
And that was one aspect of Norm.
It was, like, an incredibly kind, considerate listener.
But then there's also this stripe of Norm that is a destroyer.
And it is not, it's not a coincidence that when we talk about him...
Yeah.
It's not, he annihilated.
He killed.
He destroyed.
Yeah.
Well, Newman told me, "You never get over it."
Norm was one of my best friends.
Okay.
Good for me.
He was, like, really, like, one of my close friends.
And it was...
Like, cutting wait for a fight, huh?
It was awful, dude.
It was just...
And then I found out, like, he had cancer for a long time.
Didn't tell anybody.
And it was hard.
It's still really hard.
Everyone's pretty shook by it.
Hello?
Operator?
He was out of his...
Out of this world.
And did he chase a lot of women?
Did he have a wife or anything?
No.
I never met a wife.
He has a son, Dylan, who's really cool.
So he must have did sex once, at least.
I mean, I never saw...
He was addicted.
He was a big gambler, dude.
Really?
He loved to gamble.
Everybody's got an opinion, you know?
Norm doesn't play by rules, dude.
Don't like that guy.
He's been one of the single biggest influences on me professionally on this
show.
I've talked about it at length.
As a matter of fact, we'll show some clips of how many times I've talked about...
Awesome.
My top two guests that I ever wanted to get were Norm MacDonald and Alice
Cooper.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So that's the real tragedy in all of this, is I'll never get to have him on the
show.
And what they don't tell you about crack is, God damn, it's good.
I have always said to people, if you want to really see me laugh, and this is
long before Norm passed.
If you really want to see what it looks like when I am laughing, watch a Norm
MacDonald segment.
Because I have my hands on my belly, which I think might be my tell.
Like I put my hands on my stomach and I would have my hands on my stomach
sometimes just as Norm is coming out around the curtain.
And I see that crazy look in his eye and that insane grin that he had with
those sort of like round apple cheeks.
He was a mischievous kid.
He was a mischievous kid and he was out to cause trouble and he's coming around
the bend and his eye would catch me.
And he'd always look a little surprised to see me, even though I had just
introduced him.
Of course.
And you'd just seen him five minutes before.
I had just seen him five minutes before, but oh my God.
And, and, and I think there was this, people get, you know, cynical about show
business and, and rightfully they think, well, it's all set up or it's all been
contrived.
And sometimes it has been, but, but with that guy, when you look at any of
these clips, you're watching us be just as stunned as the audiences.
Cause we don't know.
Cause we don't know.
Yeah.
We don't know what's going to happen.
Yeah.
But daddy said, what the hell?
He was so unpredictable.
Right.
There was an electricity, just having him sit there.
You just felt it because you didn't know what he was going to do.
He was one of the best.
He really was.
There's no question.
And the world really lost a comedy legend yesterday.
What in earth happened?
Norm was drawn to touch points that you're not supposed to touch.
Yep.
And Norm would not only touch them, he would dry hump them.
Yeah.
You know, he would just, and, and so in a talk show context, you have this guy
for whom nothing is sacred.
Yeah.
And in fact, there's a little bit like, you don't sense aggression from him,
except when you get to like hypocrisy or something that's, you know, phoniness.
Yeah.
And he was also, you know, he was also too, not afraid publicly or, or in
private or something to let people that he felt were not funny, who were being
paid to be funny, let them know he didn't think they were funny.
Yeah.
And that's because he had so much genius.
I'm just an old chunk of coal, and I'm going to be a diamond someday.
