Are Amish women good cooks?
Like, do they make some cool stuff?
Or what are some good Amish meals?
Oh, yeah.
The Amish make, I'd say, make some of the best food.
Like, especially Grandma.
She had a lot of experience in the, like, in the field stuff.
Or it's, I mean, like, she has a lot of experience in, like, the field of
cooking and stuff.
Like, her breadsticks, they're, like, out of this world.
Are they?
They're really good.
And then my mom's...
What do you put on them?
Ah, I'm not even quite sure.
Can you put butter on them or not?
Yeah, butter.
Yeah, it looks exactly like that.
And can you put a little bit of salt on them?
Do you have salt?
Ah, no, we don't put salt on them.
They're, like, they're garlic breadsticks.
Oh, so they already have garlic on them.
Yeah, they, and they're, and they're just, they're really good.
And my favorite meal, like, let's say we're doing a lot of stuff.
Like, building something or, like, a frolic where, like, the whole community
comes together.
A frolic, it's called?
Yeah, that's, like, when the whole community comes together and builds
something, like a barn.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, and then, like, they'll make, they'll make some, either some chicken
or some burgers with mashed potatoes, corn, and, like, I think you would call,
like,
like, it's, like, like, mac and cheese.
Oh, yeah.
And then you put some, so what we do with our food, it's, like, hot.
We put some applesauce on it, mix it up.
Really?
Yeah, and then it's nice and cool, and then pork and beans, too.
Oh, if the food's hot, you'll put applesauce on it?
Yeah, to, like, cool it down and stuff.
So, like, that's, like, one of my favorite meals.
And then, even better, like, if you have steak and stuff, like, if you have
steak, that's really good.
Yeah.
And do you have dessert, too?
Oh, we have, we have pretty good dessert, too, like, like, pies.
Oh, I bet Amish pie's good.
Yeah, they are.
Do you have sugar, or don't you?
Yeah, they, they put sugar in them.
I'm not sure what they all put in them, because I know how to make scrambled
eggs, and that's about it.
Same.
Yeah.
And, like, yeah, they put, what is it, like, uh...
What's a popular pie that you have, or a popular dessert?
A popular pie is, uh, shoofly pie is one of them.
Okay.
And then peanut butter pie.
Shoofly pie, what is it?
Yeah.
That, I, I've not had it.
I've not really, I mean, we don't have it very often, but another pie that's
really good is mince pie, like, uh, pumpkin pie.
That's really good.
Like, apple pie, that's really good.
God, that's a good one.
Like...
I want that.
Like, that stuff is pretty good.
Yeah, that's my cousin right there.
Oh, really?
I've seen this woman before.
She's Amish.
Yeah.
No, she's ex-Amish.
Oh, she's ex-Amish.
She used to be Amish, yeah.
Some older Amish, they, like, drink, like, sit at the table and drink coffee
before they go to bed.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Wow.
Yeah, so, like, if you ever come to an Amish house, you know, don't be
surprised if you, it doesn't matter what part of the day, they'll offer you
coffee.
Oh, that's nice.
With cream or no?
Uh, they can put cream, but on the topic of coffee, I was thinking, have you
ever, have you heard of coffee soup?
Mm-mm.
Yeah, you should, you should, when, if you ever come over, you should try it.
And, uh, the way it's done right here, I would, I wouldn't recommend putting
bread in it.
It's not as good.
Like, I wouldn't recommend doing that.
Mm-mm.
The best way to do it is, uh, what it is, it's just hot milk, a little bit of
sugar, and then a little bit of instant coffee, not like a teaspoon of instant
coffee, like per, uh, like, whatever you call those things that you put, like,
like, cook water in and stuff.
Like a cup or a bowl, a pot?
Like a pot, yeah.
Almost like that.
So you put it, you pour in the milk, and then you warm it up until there's like
a little skin on top.
Mm-hmm.
And then what you do is put, while that's, well, as soon as that happens, you
take it off of the stove and you put some instant coffee, just a little bit.
You kind of have to guess it.
There's not really a recipe.
Mm-hmm.
And then you put a little bit of sugar in it.
Mm-hmm.
And usually the coffee kind of takes care of itself, like, like, goes away, put
a little bit of sugar in it.
And then the next thing you do is, um, pour it, like, you can scoop it into
your plate, and then you put, uh, some saltine crackers in it.
Uh-uh.
So that's pretty good.
Yeah.
I know, like, sound, like, some Amish, like, like, it depends on the person,
but some Amish put the crackers in before the milk.
I always like putting the milk before the crackers.
Yeah.
And then you eat some, uh, meat with it.
But if there's.
Yeah.
You put meat in at the end?
You put meat on top.
Yeah.
You've never seen anything like that?
You can do it with fish a lot.
Yeah, like, fish, too.
With fish?
Yeah.
So, the one thing about coffee soup, if you put too much coffee in it, it doesn't,
it's way too strong.
Because you know how coffee tastes.
But, like, that's, like, a sweet.
So you don't put, you don't put, you don't really taste coffee too much.
And you just put a little bit in it.
And it's good?
It's really good.
Like, if you, like, every Amish person that grew up with it loves it.
Now, if you didn't grow up with it, you might not like it.
But, like, you put some meat on it.
Now, some people like to put cottage cheese on it.
Like, I, I, I'm like, I stay away from that.
Like, my mom puts cottage cheese on.
I, I, like, no, you don't put, you don't put cottage cheese on that stuff.
People put fish on it, though?
Yeah.
Like, fish.
That's crazy to me.
Yeah, like, fish, meat.
Anything that's meat, like.
Wow.
Like, sausage.
Yeah.
No, I, I would love to come check it out sometime.
If, if, if I were near your neighborhood, could I come over to visit or I
couldn't?
Yeah, you, you probably could.
I, I'd make something work.
And, dude, if you really, if you have, if you have the stuff right now, I could
make you some coffee soup.
Oh, I don't want any of it.
Hey, you're good.
Yeah.
I mean, I appreciate.
Yeah.
You know what, that's, that's kind of rude.
No, that's not rude.
Because, like, you, you're seeing it for the first time.
And, you know, when I see stuff, like, for the first time that, like, is way
new to me, I'm, I'm also, like, kind of surprised and maybe a little bit disgusted.
But, but.
Maybe I should try it.
Yeah.
Because it, it's way better than it looks.
Because if you think of coffee and then soup, you're like, it doesn't sound
very good.
But if you make it right and you don't put too much coffee, like, you can't put
much coffee in it or it'll taste way too strong.
Oh, yeah.
That's what I heard.
It's almost like the, like the Starbucks, like the Starbucks mochas, but, like,
warmed up.
Like, warm and then you put crackers in it.
And meat, though.
And meat on top.
Yeah.
Because without the meat, it doesn't, it doesn't, it gets kind of, like, you
don't really want to eat it as, like, you get halfway through your plate and
you don't really want to eat it if you don't have meat.
But, yeah, eating it with meat, that's, that's pretty good.
Dang.
Yeah.
How about this?
If I come over, you'll make me some?
A mom will probably make you some.
Yeah.
That's what I want.
She makes it good?
Yeah.
So that's, that's usually what we have Sunday mornings or, like, sometimes
Saturday mornings too, like, like, coffee soup, fish or coffee soup and a
canned hamburger and, yeah.
That's beautiful, man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thank you.
