Being raised by a single mom growing up, I would have given pretty much
anything to give my mom a
break and have a night out on the town where she didn't have to worry about
anything. Thanks to the
growth of the podcast and our Patreon subscribers, we have the ability to make
that happen for single
moms in the cities that I perform in. This is this past weekend's Single Moms
Night Out.
What's happening? I'd like to nominate Dr. Raquel Monroe. She loves to have fun
and turn up and, you know, but she's a single mom, so it's tough. So I'd like
to nominate her. She would love it. All right, then.
Raquel. Raquel. Nice seeing you. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you so much for meeting
up with me. Yeah, I'm excited. Yeah. And how do you two know each other?
We work together at Columbia College of Chicago in the dance department. Oh, a
little bit of Ronda Jean, huh? Oh, look at you.
Look at you. My sister took one ballet class. My sister took one ballet class
and she would just do this and that.
Show us. Yeah. This is what she would do. This is the only class she ever took
and then for like four years she would just do this.
She's like, I'm a ballerina. She's like, I'm a ballerina. I'm a ballerina. That's
how you're doing it. That's exactly right.
That's good. I don't know what we're going to paint, though. We've got to think
of something good, you know?
Oh, this is my greatest insecurity. That's what I said then.
We have a contest and then we'll let the audience decide on stage tonight.
Oh, God!
Okay, so what are we going to paint? I think we have to have, because if we
have a common theme, then it's fair for them to judge.
Oh, I see. Maybe or not?
I see what you mean. You want to be a clown?
Oh, a clown. What about this? Maybe a clown that dances that way and
incorporates ballet in the box.
Oh, my God. Dancing clown?
Dancing clown.
I can't make legs and arms.
That's a good point. Okay. So, what else? Okay. Let's do a clown then.
A clown? Okay. Let's go, clown. You okay with a clown?
All right. Let's do a round of applause for her.
So, she's a sweetheart. She's a dance teacher at Columbia College.
Yes, she is.
And she has a daughter. And her daughter isn't here because her daughter
shouldn't be hearing this kind of stuff.
But, she was very sweet to come out. And before the show, we had a little bit
of a painting contest, right?
So, she looks like...
She looks like...
France. Your friend...
Colin looks like it's from France.
He's from France.
This looks like a murderous thing.
I like a murderous...
Oh, you have something.
A murderous hooker.
On order S-E-U.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that does look like it.
Like Saw.
Yeah.
Because Saw had a girlfriend, it looks like it.
That's what's going to happen.
I used to work at a Quiznos next to a Sherwin Williams. That's the closest I
ever came to being a painter for sure.
Next time we come back, you have to take me on the dance class.
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, no.
Wouldn't that be cool?
You're ready.
You're already doing yoga.
Well, I need another year of yoga before I'm ready for that.
She teaches improvisation, so you can come in and we can figure it out.
That's probably more where I'm at.
And look at...
I knew you.
I knew.
I know.
What are you talking about, dude?
Oh, my God.
The same as your clown.
That is a clown.
Yes, it is.
What are you talking about, dude?
And look at your clown too.
Yes.
You look like somebody that's been in a fire.
Y'all looks more like a clown.
No.
Yours looks copywritten, though.
I feel like yours I've seen before.
Thank you so much.
What's up, guys?
Y'all coming to the show?
Yeah, for sure.
Oh, cool.
Excited.
Yeah, we got our single mom out tonight, so...
Yeah.
We got a single mom out here tonight, so maybe we'll get her a table first, all
right?
Yeah.
It will be super interesting to see what people think.
I can't wait.
I'm gonna show you the three pictures of clowns that we did, and you guys have
to vote on which
one was best, right?
I'm gonna wait to see the clowns first, guys.
And adults hit all of these.
You're just gonna cheer for the one that you hit and should hit.
Okay, this is the first one.
Let's cheer for this one, Dan.
And this one right here.
Damn, bro.
Somebody did that, dude.
And this one right here.
I think it's this one, do you think?
Okay.
Okay, well...
Me and Raquel didn't win.
But, her friend won, so...
Yeah, you know, I grew up with a single mom, and one of the hardest...
You know, the hardest working man that I ever knew in my life was my mother.
Aw, it's true.
It was so fun.
He has a new fan and a new fan base, so now maybe black women will start
watching him,
because I'm gonna go tell that.
Hello?
Hey, Raquel.
Yes?
Hey, it's Theo.
Hi, Theo.
How are you?
I'm doing great.
How are you today?
I am good.
I am good.
Nice.
Is work done for the day?
Work is...
That part of the job is done.
Now it's just the mom part.
Now it's the mom part, huh?
And what is that like in the evenings with you guys?
I come home, I cook dinner, eat, we do bath.
I read a book.
Right now we're reading Harry Potter, the whole Harry Potter series.
She goes to sleep.
Lucky.
And did...
Yeah.
Your daughter's name, it's...
What was her name?
Mariel.
Mariel.
Mariel.
Yeah, that's such a pretty name.
And so she's starting...
What grade is she starting?
In first grade.
Oh, dang.
Mm-hmm.
The first one.
First grade, yeah.
Wow.
And what are some of...
Does she have worries or concerns?
Like, what is like a first grader kind of thinking about?
So for three years, she was in the same class.
And now she's moving to a different class, but all her friends are all moving
to the same class.
Okay.
So it's just about being with a different teacher.
Mm-hmm.
She's a little nervous about that.
And it's a first and second grade class.
So being with some of the older kids, the second graders, even though she knows
them all too.
Yeah.
So...
And then they're downstairs, not upstairs.
Oh.
So these are all things that she expressed concerns about.
Yeah.
Those are big things to kids.
Like, even just like a change in floors is like such a...
You know, going up and down stairs every day, it's like such a different world
for kids.
Yeah.
We're going to...
They're next to the big kids.
They're next to Mr. Joe's classes.
He's sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, so...
Ooh.
I know.
Well, yeah.
I had so much fun.
I think, you know, you...
I had so much fun with you and your friend who came out in Chicago.
It was so sweet of you guys.
Um...
Yeah, I was tweeting you.
And I loved the YouTube.
Um...
I loved your...
The pictures and listening to you.
So that was cool.
And we...
We really liked meeting you.
We were both talking about how you're really sincere in a way that we were not
expecting.
And you really ask thoughtful questions.
And you really...
You know, we're academics, so...
Right.
You really seem to be investigating.
Like, you're...
You really seem to be interested in parenting and relationships in a way that,
you know, like, the way you asked about it, it's like someone who is doing...
Like, you're researching this.
Mm-hmm.
So that was really interesting to us.
Well, I appreciate it.
I think you guys made me feel safe.
I definitely felt impressed that you, you know, both you ladies, you know, I
mean, I wish I could be a better dancer.
So that was kind of inspiring.
I guess it was neat to be around.
And, you know, you guys got them, you know, you got them, you know, you have
just the ability to really get them hips going if you have to.
And that's something I've always kind of admired, the ability to dance.
And then also just that you guys are educated women and teachers and, you know,
and I like being around that.
But yeah, I guess I am curious, you know, when I think about it, like, you know,
I think I kind of get afraid to have, you know, have children.
And, you know, I think all that stuff makes me so, I don't know, it gives me,
like, a lot of just anxiety and just, I don't know.
But, yeah, I appreciate you guys being candid about it and, like, just being
willing to, like, think about it and talk with me about it and that kind of
stuff.
Absolutely. Absolutely.
Well, I hope that you and Mariel have a nice evening and that, you know, and
that she, I bet she's just, it's just nice to see that she has such a, you know,
a strong mom that's, you know, doing things and staying busy and, you know,
like, you had just vibrant colors and just, like, you know, things that made me
remind my mom when I was young,
sometimes she would wear these kind of turquoise earrings once in a while.
And I always thought it was cool to see my mom, like, look pretty, you know,
like, you know, it's little things like that that we don't realize, I think, or,
you know, as we get, you know,
that kids see that, you know, that resonates with them that then they can do it,
you know, I can look pretty, you know, I can look flashy or whatever, you know.
Yeah, absolutely.
But it reminded me of that a little bit and, but yeah, it was just a great time.
I would love to hang out with you ladies again sometime whenever I'm in the
city and I'll do it.
And I hope you guys have a great first grade and thank you so much for
supporting us.
Yes, thank you.
Thank you for an incredible time.
Something I could always use in my lexicon of things that I've done.
I really appreciate it.
You bet.
So much.
You bet.
And you have a new fan.
So, take care and good luck.
You do too, Raquel.
And thank you so much.
Have a good evening.
You too.
Bye-bye.
