ladies and gentlemen
one of the greatest living American artists
filmmaker
screenwriter
critic
Paul Schrader
thank you Adam
I can't believe it
wow
wow
welcome to the Dick Cavett show
standing O
standing O
I was at dinner with my girlfriend's family in Manhattan a couple months ago
and I saw you and I went up to the table and I was like Mr. Schrader
this was a restaurant?
yeah for Italian food
where?
well I'll tell you the story
okay
I went up to you and I was like you're one of the best I'm such a fan and he's
like I'm from San Diego
it was just some guy that looked like it wasn't you at all and then I went back
to the table and my girlfriend's mom was like was that one of the Sopranos?
but it's great it's great it's great to have you here
I'm like I can't fucking believe it wow thank you so Marlon Brando you've met
him fat?
I had a couple of experiences
that's what we were just talking about
that's what we were just talking about
that's what we were just talking about
that's what we were just talking about
I had a couple of experiences Marlon
the first one was
Warner's owed him some money and he wanted to do a remake of Invisible Man
and Marlon called me up and he was in Tahiti and he wanted to tell me the whole
story about how he wanted to do it in Invisible Man
and I listened to him and I talked to him and we had another conversation
then I realized that he had Warner's owed him two million dollars
and he figured one day he'll come in put the tape on in the morning in the
afternoon he'll take the tape off
the next day he'll do the voiceovers and that's his two million dollars
and I said to him Marlon you know I know those guys over at Warner Brothers and
Ted Simone
I don't think they're going to give you two million dollars for two days work
he said oh yeah you're probably right you're probably right
and then some years later Nick Pelleggi and I were doing a script for him on
City Hall
it eventually got made with Pacino
but it was supposed to be Alec Waldo to Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando was supposed to play the Donald Manus character
he was a famous corrupt politician in the 80s here
and so we would go over to his place
and he was so big at that time he needed somebody to help him up
I mean part of his tragedy was he came acting was so easy for him in a way that
he became to
disrespect his own craft
600, 700 pounds?
No more like 500.
It's just such a waste of pure sexiness
Well I mean so he has this guy this city councilman and some of them says I
think he has a bongo club
What is that?
It's a club where he plays bongos
Okay
Now we're talking about the bongo club
and he said you know I think he has a parrot
I think he has a parrot on his shoulder
and he talks to the parrot when he plays the bongos
go back with Pledgy and say what do we can do about the god damn parrot
Nick said we can make it work, we can make the parrot work
and I meet him Marlon a third time and he said I don't know what this shit is
about New York politics
Nobody gives a damn about New York politics
We got a guy with a bongo club with a parrot
That's great
Let's get rid of the politics
That's the movie
Yeah
And they said well it was written by the former deputy mayor of New York City
It's all about New York politics
I said nah nah nobody cares about that
And then he didn't work on the project after that
Pacino ended up taking the Baldwin role and I forget who took the
That's a good thing that Baldwin wasn't there because you know
And Pressman
Because he shot a woman in cold blood
No, no, no, no
Sorry, I do blue humor
Yeah, but I mean you've got to have some accuracy
No, we're not going to put that in the episode
But he premeditatedly shot them
He did it out of director's instruction
The director is like this is a fella's job
Yeah, so anyway the producer called up Marlon
After that after that had fallen apart
Was trying to patch it back together
And he said it would have never worked anyway
He said I've met people like Schrader
It would have never worked
He said why?
He said they're always trying to tell you what to do
Right
But he's an actor
Yeah
It's really funny like he kind of served a function in society
As in society used to allow for artists to be eccentrics
And now I think in our current day and age
I think Kanye West is probably the last one that can just say something out of
like insane
And that society kind of forgives
Well I mean when they came up, the three guys who changed acting, Dean, Clifton,
Brando, they were bisexual, a lot of them
But they really revolutionized acting
James Dean was a bisexual?
Yeah
Well just look at the photography
He looked like a girl a little bit, no?
Yeah
Look at the photography
Well all great actors
Like Elvis Presley had feminine features
There was a critic called Parker Tyler
A very formidable American critic
And he criticizes men's looks?
No
He had a book called, a big book called Screening the Sexes
And his theory was that sexuality is not bipolar, it's a rainbow
And that every star finds their place on the rainbow
But it's not on either end
And stars know how to work the rainbow
Mick Jagger knows how to play to the male side of a female side of a man and
vice versa
I look a lot like him, no? Or a little bit? No? In the suit?
John Wayne certainly knew what he was doing when he was walking around
Wait, you think John Wayne was gay coded?
No, no, no, he knew what he was doing
He was walking around on the balls of his feet with his heels up
I think that's autism
No, no, no, Wayne was perfectly aware that he was having it both ways
I'm a big fan of your work, right?
And I'd seen Taxi Drive
Like I obviously wasn't alive when it came out
And I'd seen it probably ten times
And only recently went to see it in the last two years in a cinema
And the thing that shocked me the most was that it played as a comedy
I was kind of wondering if just that screening was an anomaly or if you were
aware of that
Something of an anomaly
I mean there is a lot of black humor in it
And I think as it's aged people are more comfortable with the black humor of it
But it is very funny if you are going on a date with a girl to take her to a
pornographic theater
And thinking that that's what couples like
I mean that's a very funny set up
And Albert Brooks' character is very funny too
Well that's something I learned from Marty
And I've used that lesson ever since
I had written that character
He was truly bland
He was so beige you couldn't see him
And Marty decided to cast Albert who had just had a number one comedy album out
I asked Marty why and he said well this character is so boring
Albert will figure out something to do
And I've gone that way again
I did it like with Cedric and Tiffany Haddish
You cast a lot of comedians
Yeah
And you cast prior
Yeah
Because if you cast them
They know one thing
They know how not to die
They know how to stand up and keep alive
Yeah
You know I'm a comedian as well
Yeah
Yeah
I don't know if I
You do stand up?
Stand up yeah
Yeah
So that's what it is
Acting is kind of easy no?
You just say the word?
It can be
I mean
One of the problems with some actors is they feel they have to earn their money
And they have to act
And you see them earning their money
And then you're knocked out of it
Because you're watching them be happy
Watching them be sad
Is there like some aspect of emotional manipulation in directing?
Well you read
Like there's that story about Herzog pointing the gun at Kinski right?
Yeah well it could have been the other way around too
That guy was a real whack job no?
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Some people do not need to be manipulated
They have a true line
They really sense it
Sometimes you get lucky and you find what they need
For me the clearest example was when I was working with James Coburn on Affliction
Coburn at that time was semi-retired
He had this big baritone voice
